Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Spring

Notes / Commercial Description:
Big Sound Scotch Ale is dedicated to our good buddy Gino, the most Punk Rock Bagpiper you will ever meet, and the rest of the men and women of the Tampa Bay Pipes and Drums. Brown in color, Big Sound has huge notes of dark sweet toffee with underlying mild notes of coffee in the aroma. The flavor starts with a slight note of cherry and then opens into a goliath of malt character with notes of dark sweet toffee, coffee and mild notes of toasted bread in the finish. Big Sound Scotch Ale pairs well with Haggis, Highland Games, Huge Heads, Enormous pillows and of course Bagpipe Music.

Sampling a cellar temp bottle poured into a snifter. Beer is a gift from MHorridge during my recent trip to Tampa. THANKS!
the beer pours a rich dark mahogany with deep garnet notes and no light passing through the glass. A very minimal beige head foams up and fades to nothing instantaneously after the pour. NO head remains during the sampling. I hit the appearance a bit for the lack of good foam.
The aroma is lots of malt and sweetness with caramel and brown sugar and bits of molasses. No hints of any hop presence and the booze is well hidden too.
First sip reveals a pretty thick body with sticky coating texture and very fine yet tingly carbonation. The beer coats my palate after each sip and maintains the flavor and a bit of roast in my mouth.
Flavor is sweet and malty as expected with lots brow sugar and molasses. I get some rich dark chocolate and dark fruit with fig and raisins. I dont get any hops here, and I also dont get any black peppery booze or heat for that matter.
This is a complex, thick and smooth brew that is very enjoyable and is a bit of a sipper due to the thickness, but not something that burns after each sip. Glad to have got this bottle back with me from Tampa.

Wow, didn't know what to expect initially. I wasn't overly enthused by the pour. However, the nutty smell and taste was shocking. The strong alcoholic taste was a bit of a shock. 8.5% isn't your bud light, but i've drank plenty of higher ABV beers with less alcoholic flavor. However, this was a great beer to have after supper.

Dark mahogany color with light brown head. Aroma has intense dark fruits like dates and dried cherries. Taste starts also fruity with a hint of burnt sugar. Finishes really balanced. Medium body and carbonation. Overall it's a nice scotch ale, true to style and really well made.

Poured at 47F from a 22oz bottle (bottled 12Jan16) into a thistle glass. Consumed on 10Apr16.
LOOK: An astounding five fingers worth of light brown foam is formed after pouring. The gargantuan foam head immediately begins to recede via a cascade for about 20 seconds. A fingers worth of foam is lost in this manner. Once the cascading ceases, the remainder foam head eventually dissipates into a half fingers worth within 3 minutes. Dark brown in color with a ruby tint. Rising bubbles are subtle in quantity and small in size. Lacing is very thick and moderate.
SMELL: Very strong aromas of molasses harmonize with strong caramel, toffee, and sweet bread along with mild aromas of coffee, smoked goodness, tree nuts, plums, figs, and black cherries to create an ultimate balance of sweet and bitter.
TASTE: Strong black cherry, plum, and fig flavors first explode onto the palate, satisfying my sweet tooth that longs for unbalanced beers. Strong flavors of molasses, caramel, and toffee along with mild sweet bread flavors immediately add to the sweetness, further satisfying my sadistic sweet tooth. Some balanced is finally achieved once mild flavors of bittersweet coffee, tree nuts, and smoked goodness caress the palate while all previous flavors press on, except for black cherry, which grow stronger.
FEEL: This is so incredibly full-bodied, I can practically chew this beer. Carbonation levels are moderate. The beer goes down smooth and creamy while also clinging to the back of the throat like syrup. Finishes with a strong and unpleasant dryness.
NOTE: One of the best of its style that I have had. Somewhat unbalanced and leaning towards the sweeter side, this beer isn't for everyone. My main complaint is that there is too much cherry going on. That's a personal bias, however, since I do not like cherries too much.

22oz bottle dated 01/12/16, poured into a tulip. Cola colored with a thin, tan head that dissipates quickly but lingers on the side of the glass.

Smells of sweet malts, plum, light smoke, some figs, and cola.

Taste is molasses, dark fruits, light smoke, a little booze and some wood that leaves a dry finish.

Really smooth, well balanced beer. Drink this at cellar temperature to really let the layers of flavor open up.
