Bomber shared with friends while watching MLB playoffs 2017.

There are basically two kinds of pumpkin beers:
- Spiced pumpkin beer
- Earthy, fleshy pumpkin

My personal preference is the latter, beer than tastes like fresh pumpkin flesh with minimal spice (think Schlafly Pumpkin or Alewerks Pumpkin). I feel like these have more body and are more refreshing. Good Gourd is the former, with a stronger emphasis on the spicing - cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves. Thus, it seems more artificial and thinner. Not as overtly spiced as Pumking, thank god.

Given the high ratings this beer has received, I was disappointed. Basically a spiced brown ale. The pumpkin flavor was insufficient for me. Strong, though.

A - Murky amber color with lots of sediment. Minimal head that dissipates in about a minute. Moderate bubbling.

S - Pumpkin, sweet malts, dark fruits.

T - Pumpkin with a very mild bitterness. Malty and pruney. Not quite as sweet as the smell. A bit boozy.

M - Pretty heavy. Average carbonation and smoothness.

O - A solid pumpkin ale. Complex and heavy. Good for dark beer drinkers.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark amber color and a clear consistency. . There was a quarter inch of foamy head that lasted a below average amount of time. OK lacing.

S: A fantastic aroma of pumpkin, an array of spices, and malt.

T: Tasted of a whole bunch of different spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, to name some), a tinge of malt, a fair amount of pumpkin, and a hint of vanilla. This is an incredibly well-balanced, focused flavor. They go pretty heavy on the spices, but this isn't a bad thing at all.

F: A good amount of carbonation with a super smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is one of the best pumpkin ales I've tried this season. Well made and drinkable.

Poured from 22 oz bomber dated 8/22/2017.

A: Red tinted brown with 1-2 finger off white head. Lasting retention and moderate lacing.

S: All of the aromas you might expect. Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and all spice. A bit of vanilla

T: Nice blend of sweet and spice with all of the memories of Thanksgiving pumpkin pie. Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, all spice, and some brown sugar.

M: Medium body with average carbonation. Alcohol is pretty well hidden.

O: Pumpkin beers can be hit or miss with me, but this is a good one.

Poured from the bottle into a Cigar City branded tulip/snifter.

Muted and bulb red mix of garnet red, and mahogany brown body color. Settles down, but makes a good tan two finger creamy head, and a good settling collar. Nice body, and a simple presence.

Big aroma. Large amounts but beautifully stated clove and nutmeg, with a controlled but small sweet character. Light and airy sugars mixing with very nice brown spices, and a dry malt backbone it seems. This almost comes off crisp and hot, but wonderfully.

Palate sticks to basics, but also stays away from large sugars. Nutty tasting, and slightly vegetative mid palate. A flavorful rich but light bodied mid palate consisting of hot cinnamon and nutmeg. Tannic dry slightly on the finish, with a large stuck brown spice heat. Minimal carbonation, kind of flat but also supportive.

It's not a pumpkin bomb, or a sugary mess, but it's a good show case of spice. The beer particularly for an imperial just needs some more depth.

Pours deep ruby red with an inch of off-white head that fades fairly quickly, leaving a thin ring behind.

The taste and nose are medicinal cherry, cinnamon, raisin, and pumpkin pie. Super smooth for 8.8% alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium. Could use a little bit more pie crust character, maybe, to balance things out. Medium minus sweetness. Has some almost Belgian dark ale characteristics, off-set by pumpkin spice. Very mild but present alcohol on the finish.

Overall, definitely one of the better pumpkin beers I've had. Schlafly is still my favorite, but this is close. Not cloying or overdone like some others in this style. 8+/10.

2017 release. Poured into Cigar City tulip glass. It pours a dark brown-cola color with two fingers of khaki-colored head and lacing with excellent retention. Myriad bubbles ascend the glass. The nose features sweet malt, fairly subtle pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a whiff of tobacco. The first thing I taste, not surprisingly, is the pumpkin; and it is very sweet. There is also lots of spice: nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, and allspice. What surprises me is that there follows a cracker and caramel taste that has a spice cake-like quality. This is increasingly prevalent as the glass warms. This ale has a pleasantly creamy feel with moderate carbonation. The ABV is a deceptive 8.8% It doesn't drink that high. Overall, this is an excellent pumpkin ale that grew on me as I sipped it. It has unexpected complexity of taste and feel. I'm glad this ale is now distributed in New Jersey. It will be part of my autumn rotation.
