I had both the 2014 and 2016 version at Cigar City.

Pours inky black and THICK with a thin tan head.

The smell is incredible - vanilla, cinnamon, bitter chocolate, pepper heat, atop an amazing Imperial Stout base of roasted malts. The 2014 version smelled sweeter, with less pepper and spices, and more of a milk chocolate characteristic.

Taste is unbelievable. The backbone is this great Imperial Stout flavor, but on top is chocolate, cinnamon, and vanilla. Mild pepper heat on the back end. Again, the 2014 version was for more mellow on the spices but equally good.

Mouthfeel is thick and oily. The peppers liven it up if you let it linger.

This is my favorite beer to date, BY FAR. I decline to give it a perfect review since I might come across something better someday.

"In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lors of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu's corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically asesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would uptiumately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun." Brewed in the style of an American Double / Imperial Stout, available in 750ml. bottles and on limited draft. Annual brewery-only release, this is the 2014 version.

Poured from a 750ml. bottle to a snifter glass.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp foamy head of a dark chocolate tone over a black body. Retention is average and there is no visible lacing. 3.75

(Smell) Moderate roasted malt, chocolate, faded vanilla, sweet cinnamon, faint pepper heat, some slight oxidation. Still a very enjoyable aroma, a bit tame with a moderate potency. 4.25

(Taste) Incredible blend of smooth and rich stout flavors. Spicy cinnamon and vanilla atop a delectable malt body of cocoa, moderate roasted barley, pale malt syrups and smooth caramel syrups. Finishes with a touch of tingle on the tongue from the chili peppers and also a phenomenal smoothness, surprisingly clean with a well-concealed alcohol presence. Highly drinkable, yet satisfactorily filling. Incredibly enjoyable and a great treat to split with a special somebody (although you'd better be sure that they are VERY special). 4.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, moderately chewy, lightly sticky, mildly dry. Carbonation is modest, generating a medium frothiness and a mildly crisp finish. Body is medium+ for the style, heavy overall. Balance is slightly sweet over earthy and roasted bitter and spicy (very subtle). Alcohol presence is mild and there are no off characters. 4.5

(Overall) Although I think I'd recall bottles of Hunahpu display their flavor range somewhat better at a younger age, I saved this one in particular for a very special occasion, the big review #950 and was not at all let down. Holds up incredibly well through a reasonable window of time, incredible stout base but many of the adjuncts thrown in with it are what takes this beer to the next level. The cinnamon and vanilla come through nicely and create a nice degree of richness and complexity atop the expected and solid stout flavors. Even the delicate spiciness generated from the chili peppers create an appreciated dimension of balance that one may have never known was needed in a stout but works great in this beer regardless. A great dessert beer or all around Imperial Stout, there's never been a regret in getting a bottle of this- It lives up to the hype. A no-brainer annual event to visit if you live in Florida, let's just say I had a "wild" time in March 2014 there (who can forget that day?). 4.5

This is a 2015. Pours super dark brown with a bit less than a finger of head, nice brown color, quickly dissipated. No light passing through this bad boy. Not much on the nose, some chocolate, maybe a bit of cinnamon, fair amount of booze. The taste is wonderful, like a delicious chocolate shake. Tons of cocoa, nice amount of vanilla and cinnamon, don't get much from the peppers. Incredibly smooth with a really long finish of bittersweet chocolate. Mouth feel is great. Overall just a great beer. I've had it on draft now (several years) and a bunch of the varietals. Meets the hype, or most of it a least.

Pours black, no head. Smells of coffee, alcohol. Tastes wallows in coffee, cinnamon, alcohol, prunes. Lots of carbonation and creaminess in the feel. Amazing.

Pours a motor oil black color. Aroma is super roasted malts, notes of chili and tobacco. Flavor is complex and roasted with notes of chili and a subtle sweetness. Has a big rich body and overall is really delicious.

L - Pitch black body and dark brown head

S - Brownie batter, cinnamon, fudge, vanilla, marshmallow, pepper skin.

T - Big wallop of vanilla up front with rich, melted dark chocolate and cocoa powder. Heavy pepper flavor an a dash of coffee. Pepper heat hits the back of the tongue, but doesn't set it on fire.

F - Thick and viscous. Feels like a massive 11% stout, but the dessert-like flavors make it highly drinkable even with the chili heat.

O - One of the better spicy stouts out there and one that really kicked off the Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout craze. Thumbs up!

Made it to Cigar City for the first time. Worth the drive! I had the 14 and the 16 5 Oz poor, liked the 14 better. Had to be sure so I tried the again, yep still like the 14 better. It appears to age well and loose a little of the zip/carbonation.

This beer pours a thick motor oil jet black with a half finger head that is very dark brown with a garnet hue. The head dissipates completely and almost immediately and there isn't a single spot of lacing. Smell is the only draw back only because I thought it would be stronger, but it is still amazing and this bottle is about a year old. The rich chocolate, roasted malts really stand out with a nice mix of cinnamon and peppers as well. Taste is everything I hoped it would be and more. A great blend of sweet chocolate and roasted malt that give off a little hint of coffee up front, then mid sip the vanilla takes over with the cinnamon and a touch of heat from the peppers making for the perfect finish. Feel is perfect for a stout. Thick, full bodied and very viscous. Overall lives up to/exceeds the hype. This beer is phenomenal!

2014 vintage. Met or exceeded every expectation that I had. Roasted grains, chocolate, vanilla, and cinnamon throughout the nose and taste. Did not get much chili, which I was thankful for. Silky smooth mouthfeel. Would recommend, and will seek again.

Wow, what a lack of carbonation in this black and brown beer. Aroma didn't give much in the chili department, it had lots of roast though.

Taste gave some chili flavors, very minimal though. Mild Mexican chocolate. Cinnamon is there. Very thick viscosity. I gotta say, most of this series of beer I've had has been pretty underwhelming given its reputation.

2015 opened almost a year after bottling. Much better then Abraxas, cinnamon is more mellow and overall makes for a much better experience and smoother beer. All the flavors compliment each other very well.

Living in Florida I've had the opportunity to have Huna on tap. To be honest, until recently I was never a big fan of the beer. Maybe my palette changed or I had a really good batch but I finally had what I think is an excellent imperial stout. What hit me this time was the cinnamon and touch of heat working so well with so many flavors of chocolate, coffee, smoke and more. I never realized how complex this beer tastes. I really enjoyed drinking this beer and will seek it out for now on.

Having it again on 5/8/16. I'm raising the look to a 5. I know this sounds ridiculous, but it has the best looking dark foam for a head. This beer is true luxury!

2013 bottle.
Consumed with a dark gumbo.

The nose is chilis and chocolate.
Taste is same but with some great dark cherry flavor creeping in. Well balanced. Dry finish.
Mouthfeel incredibly thick. Wow!

As a St. Louis boy, it pains me to say, but this is better than abraxas, mainly because the cinnamon is overpowering in abraxas imo. Great job, cigar city. Hope to try a ba version someday!

I honestly was kind of disappointed with this one. Had a 2013 bottle not too long ago and thought it was good, but not amazing. Maybe the spices and other flavors had dissipated but I just didn't think it lived up to the hype. Xocoveza is a great alternative and so easy to get now.

2015 vintage. Poured from a bomber into a snifter, the beer is jet black, oily and thick, with a halo of light tan head. Nose of rich chocolate, molasses, and coffee. Rich and heavy throughout. Flavors are boozy forward, heavy on chocolate, coconut, brown sugar, tobacco, molasses, char, subtle smoke, and coffee. Amazing. Smooth, rich, layered body, with a roasted, smoked, molasses, chocolate, and coffee aftertaste. Smooth, slick, and dry finish. Very solid, unique beer.

Serving: 1 pint 9.4 Fl. oz. bottle poured into a Founder's tap room snifter. Would have used my Cigar City snifter, but it's too small for this giant bottle. Bottled on 1/14/15, making this just over a year old, but still only 10 months after the last Hunahpu's Day.

A: Pours pitch black, motor oil thick, with an amazing luscious dark brown 1-finger head. Very beautiful beer.

S: Very complex. Lots of cinnamon, chocolate, vanilla, rum-soaked white cake. Just a hint of pepper skin in the back. Faint, faint notes of dark fruits as well.

T: Hugely complex here, but that's expected when there's this many ingredients. Right up front is that cinnamon wave, followed by rich vanilla and chocolate layering. The peppers come through in the finish with that lingering heat. Certainly not hot, with just the right kick from the peppers. Everything is layered here, much like in a dessert, and it works beautifully.

M: Rich, full mouthfeel. Exactly what I want in my Imperial Stouts. Alcohol is hidden very well. Great, great balance with all the ingredients, nothing overpowering.

O: Big thanks to pcstuck for this one. I've been chasing this guy for quite some time. Made it out to Cigar City a couple years ago and fell in love with the place. Don't know if I'll ever make a Hunahpu's Day, so I had to get one when the opportunity struck. For me, this beer lives up to all the hype and legend surrounding it. In terms of the genre, being the Mexican Hot Chocolate style, it's right up there with the best. This is how I like my Imperial Stouts, with lots of character and flavor. From beginning to end, this one is a stunner. Very rich, decadent, layered and complex.

Recommendation: One of the legends, a must-try.

Pours raven black in the glass. I was expecting much more heat on this one, something similar to that of Mexican Cake. I was pleasantly surprised by its smoothness. Perhaps it was due to the fact that the bottle had been aged (2014); nevertheless, I was pleased. Chocolate dominates the palate, though hints of cinnamon and pepper undertones fight for some recognition. Mouthfeel was silky smooth. Overall, I am pleased with this one. Wish I had more.

A: Nearly pitch black in body with a dark khaki, thick head. Legs are long on this one.

S: Aroma is sweet but difficult to discern. Elements of cocoa powder, deep, dark fruit juice and sweet malts.

T: Taste is dominated by dark chocolate fudge or brownie. The flavor is not as complex as expected but the finish does provide a flash of heat as the liquid clears the palate.

M: Feel on this one is in line with the appearance. Nice and thick yet smooth and silky going down.

O: This is a great beer worthy of the ratings and reputation. One of the few non-BA imperial stouts that has the full mouthfeel that I look for.

Released March 9, 2013 consumed 12/27/15. Pours very dark near black with slight beige ring. Some vanilla and bourbon on the nose with coffee. Taste mainly malts, bourbon, vanilla, but the chilies are muted, may be due to time. Chocolate finish. Heavy body and slight carbonation.

March 2014 bottle. Very salty. No head. Less thick than it looks and of what was expected. Salt is the dominant flavor feature with cinnamon, chile and vanilla following. Easy to drink except for the saltiness. Overall, very decent. No alcohol heat on this one, maybe from sitting for a year and a half?

Pours a dark brown with a minimal amount of head. Lots of chocolate on the nose, some coffee also. The taste is dominated by chocolate, more like a powdered chocolate taste. Almost no heat from the peppers . Just a slight heat at the back end of the sip., A good stout, but did not live up to the hype.

A rich and complex Imperial Stout. Just enough heat to make it exciting but it doesn't linger on the palate which allows you to enjoy the nibs, vanilla and cinnamon that follows. Awesome brew! I should move to Tampa.
