Pours motor oil black with a dark tan head. Smells like chocolate and vanilla (pepper is really hard to smell), with vanilla staying in the nose the longest. But when you get to drinking it, it's a whole different beast. RICH dark chocolate with coffee and a bit of a peppery sensation on the back of the tongue. Sweetness comes out after warming up a bit, but the front of flavors is chocolate. The feel is rich and thick. Overall, amazing beer and worth everything I gave up for one. So damn good.

L: pours pitch black and looks like motor oil. The half finger of head is the darkest brown head I've ever seen.
S: Sweetness, huge chocolate aromas followed by slight cinnamon and vanilla.
T: Huge chocolate.....there is slight cinnamon and vanilla. There is nice chili heat on the back end but not overwhelming. I get all the notes on the bottle, they are all blended well and truely fantastic!
F: super thick beer. Tied for the tickest I've ever had. It's so smooth with a velvet feel.
O: Fantastic beer!

750 ml shared......Dark brown with a finger and a half of mocha head. Pick up all of the flavors in the nose.....Chocolate, vanilla, peppers, and toffee. Love the taste....all the favors mix together perfectly. Nothing overpowers......unlike the cinnamon in Abraxas. Feel is perfect for the style.....medium heavy with moderate carbonation. Almost perfect example of the style.

2016 bottle drank on 4/16/2016

L-thick motor oil with a thin tan head

S-chocolate, hints of vanilla, cinnamon, subtle peppers

T- sweet dark chocolate with spices...some vanilla comes through and the peppers are subtle and not annoying or overpowering at all

F-drinkable big time...minimal booze. Really nice creaminess

O-first time I have had really fresh and this was very enjoyable. Great aged and great fresh!

750ml brown bottle, sample sent from the brewery.

Dark crude oil color, brown head slowly dissipates to a thin but sticky lacing. Aromas of over-caramelized cinnamon buns, chocolate, mild dark fruit, and a roasty maltiness. Sweet throughout but there is so much going on here it simply is the perfect and complex Imperial Stout base. Cinnamon and chilies really pop, cocoa nibs and a fine layer of chocolate and meld well with the sweetness, vanilla adds some depth, and the alcohol really round this brew out with floral and dark fruit undertones. Clearly a sipper, a fun one at that. Its quite obvious this is one of those bucket list beers. Well worth hunting a bottle of few down.

750ml bottle, 2016 release, poured into a Cigar City "Cursive Hunahpu" snifter glass.

The beer pours out super thick and viscous, jet black with a thick caramel colored head with good legs and retention leaving spots of lace behind. The aroma is bursting of chocolate cake, rich grains, light cinnamon and vanilla bean with some stone fruits and a touch of pepper heat. The nose is super rich and decadent, very inviting. The flavors boom with chocolate cake and brownie batter, cinnamon, more pronounced pepper heat that adds some depth and complexity but really dries the beer out, mild vanilla bean with roasted grain that linger with some stone fruits. The mouthfeel is very dry but coating, very silky and smooth, chewy with a warm finish.

Verdict: A nice spiced stout from Cigar City, great chocolate flavors and tame heat that adds some nice flavor. That being said, compared to many other stouts with chili peppers, this one is super dry and it detracts from how rich the aroma was.

It doesn't get much better than this as far as stouts go. I downed a whole bottle by myself last December, and I loved every drop. Tons of chocolate and cinnamon, the peppers give it just enough heat to make it interesting. Just an amazing brew.

My first experience with this beer was a fresh 2016 bottle in my kitchen. Sadly, I was less than impressed. I'm currently sitting at the Cigar City Brewery in Tampa, FL drinking from a 2014 vintage bottle and I'm blown away. Has the recipe drastically changed or did 2 and a half years work that much wonder on this beer? I'm not sure, but I'm editing my rating to reflect the level of degree that my mind was blown into. This is an amazing stout that deserves the praise bestowed upon it. It's complexity is intense. It's sweet, hot, sour, and savory. Thank you CCB for the experience.

This beer poured a dark black color with a dark tan head. There are some spices going on in the nose but I'm really unable to tell exactly what they are.
Even though I've never had this beer before the taste from what I know is a giveaway there is a nice spice taste with lots of cinnamon coming through. Nice balance with the roasted malts with some chocolate overtones for sure.
The mouthfeel is smooth just the right amount of carbonation for this great beer.
As I've let this beer warm in my glass it has gotten nothing but better.

Very dark black, with an amazingly dense and dark yet vibrantly bright mocha brown two finger head that dies to a persistent collar.

Milky, nutty, roasted malts are showcased up front on the nose, with bright, fruity, dark chocolate coming forward in a big way shortly after. Only light cinnamon is detectable in the background.

Milky, nutty, roasted malt flavors smoothly transfer over with the dark chocolate and maybe a little vanilla as well. It's refreshing that stout comes first and the supplemental flavors come second. Some heat tickles the tongue that I at first thought was due to the big, freshly grated cinnamon flavor, but maybe it was the chilis kicking in--they were a little spicier than I thought they would be, probably too much for some but all right for me. The chili heat is actually not too detectable at first, and really only shows up in the back of throat, but builds over time. In any case, the actual flavor of chili isn't really present. It even seems a little oaky like it has some barrel influence.

Hunahpu has a nice, soft and frothy moutfeel, but is not not as thick as the head would suggest, just a moderate to light body, with some drying cinnamon, but it's not a spice bomb like other chili beers.

Rating #500 for me. Excited to try this, as I'm a big fan of spiced stouts. Hoping it lives up to its reputation.

A: Jet black, with one finger of dark brown head. Basically looks exactly like Marshal Zhukov. 4.75/5.

S: Roast, chocolate, and...honestly, not much else. Not getting much in the way of vanilla or spices. Kind of surprised, as some of my favorite spiced stouts have much more pepper on the nose. Expected the heat to be more visible. If this was a non-adjunct stout, it would be 4.5/5, but I'm not getting the adjuncts like I thought I would. 4/5.

T: Once again, the adjuncts aren't nearly as pronounced as I expected. This beer is delicious, thanks to its A+ level base beer. The peppers are there on the finish, but there isn't really heat. More of a prickly spice. THe cinnamon may be the most pronounced adjunct. All together, the adjuncts are quite balanced, but somewhat subdued as well. 4.25/5.

M: This has the same viscosity and mouthfeel as MZ, and I love it. I've never had a stout with a better mouthfeel than this and MZ. 5/5.

O: A delicious beer that I would be happy to drink anytime. I wish the adjuncts were more pronounced, but this is a minor complaint. 4.25/5.

L: Dark and chocolaty
S: Depends on the year. Each year smells of spices. Some are more subtle
T: Amazing. Coffee, dark chocolate, spice, cinnamon or nutmeg. Slight vanilla depending on the year
O: Had the great fortune to try 2013 - 2016. Loved 13 the best. Each year this beer just developed more and more. If you can trade for it, do it. Won't be disappointed.

I had both the 2014 and 2016 version at Cigar City.

Pours inky black and THICK with a thin tan head.

The smell is incredible - vanilla, cinnamon, bitter chocolate, pepper heat, atop an amazing Imperial Stout base of roasted malts. The 2014 version smelled sweeter, with less pepper and spices, and more of a milk chocolate characteristic.

Taste is unbelievable. The backbone is this great Imperial Stout flavor, but on top is chocolate, cinnamon, and vanilla. Mild pepper heat on the back end. Again, the 2014 version was for more mellow on the spices but equally good.

Mouthfeel is thick and oily. The peppers liven it up if you let it linger.

This is my favorite beer to date, BY FAR. I decline to give it a perfect review since I might come across something better someday.

"In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lors of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu's corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically asesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would uptiumately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun." Brewed in the style of an American Double / Imperial Stout, available in 750ml. bottles and on limited draft. Annual brewery-only release, this is the 2014 version.

Poured from a 750ml. bottle to a snifter glass.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp foamy head of a dark chocolate tone over a black body. Retention is average and there is no visible lacing. 3.75

(Smell) Moderate roasted malt, chocolate, faded vanilla, sweet cinnamon, faint pepper heat, some slight oxidation. Still a very enjoyable aroma, a bit tame with a moderate potency. 4.25

(Taste) Incredible blend of smooth and rich stout flavors. Spicy cinnamon and vanilla atop a delectable malt body of cocoa, moderate roasted barley, pale malt syrups and smooth caramel syrups. Finishes with a touch of tingle on the tongue from the chili peppers and also a phenomenal smoothness, surprisingly clean with a well-concealed alcohol presence. Highly drinkable, yet satisfactorily filling. Incredibly enjoyable and a great treat to split with a special somebody (although you'd better be sure that they are VERY special). 4.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, moderately chewy, lightly sticky, mildly dry. Carbonation is modest, generating a medium frothiness and a mildly crisp finish. Body is medium+ for the style, heavy overall. Balance is slightly sweet over earthy and roasted bitter and spicy (very subtle). Alcohol presence is mild and there are no off characters. 4.5

(Overall) Although I think I'd recall bottles of Hunahpu display their flavor range somewhat better at a younger age, I saved this one in particular for a very special occasion, the big review #950 and was not at all let down. Holds up incredibly well through a reasonable window of time, incredible stout base but many of the adjuncts thrown in with it are what takes this beer to the next level. The cinnamon and vanilla come through nicely and create a nice degree of richness and complexity atop the expected and solid stout flavors. Even the delicate spiciness generated from the chili peppers create an appreciated dimension of balance that one may have never known was needed in a stout but works great in this beer regardless. A great dessert beer or all around Imperial Stout, there's never been a regret in getting a bottle of this- It lives up to the hype. A no-brainer annual event to visit if you live in Florida, let's just say I had a "wild" time in March 2014 there (who can forget that day?). 4.5

This is a 2015. Pours super dark brown with a bit less than a finger of head, nice brown color, quickly dissipated. No light passing through this bad boy. Not much on the nose, some chocolate, maybe a bit of cinnamon, fair amount of booze. The taste is wonderful, like a delicious chocolate shake. Tons of cocoa, nice amount of vanilla and cinnamon, don't get much from the peppers. Incredibly smooth with a really long finish of bittersweet chocolate. Mouth feel is great. Overall just a great beer. I've had it on draft now (several years) and a bunch of the varietals. Meets the hype, or most of it a least.

L - Pitch black body and dark brown head

S - Brownie batter, cinnamon, fudge, vanilla, marshmallow, pepper skin.

T - Big wallop of vanilla up front with rich, melted dark chocolate and cocoa powder. Heavy pepper flavor an a dash of coffee. Pepper heat hits the back of the tongue, but doesn't set it on fire.

F - Thick and viscous. Feels like a massive 11% stout, but the dessert-like flavors make it highly drinkable even with the chili heat.

O - One of the better spicy stouts out there and one that really kicked off the Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout craze. Thumbs up!

Made it to Cigar City for the first time. Worth the drive! I had the 14 and the 16 5 Oz poor, liked the 14 better. Had to be sure so I tried the again, yep still like the 14 better. It appears to age well and loose a little of the zip/carbonation.

This beer pours a thick motor oil jet black with a half finger head that is very dark brown with a garnet hue. The head dissipates completely and almost immediately and there isn't a single spot of lacing. Smell is the only draw back only because I thought it would be stronger, but it is still amazing and this bottle is about a year old. The rich chocolate, roasted malts really stand out with a nice mix of cinnamon and peppers as well. Taste is everything I hoped it would be and more. A great blend of sweet chocolate and roasted malt that give off a little hint of coffee up front, then mid sip the vanilla takes over with the cinnamon and a touch of heat from the peppers making for the perfect finish. Feel is perfect for a stout. Thick, full bodied and very viscous. Overall lives up to/exceeds the hype. This beer is phenomenal!

2014 vintage. Met or exceeded every expectation that I had. Roasted grains, chocolate, vanilla, and cinnamon throughout the nose and taste. Did not get much chili, which I was thankful for. Silky smooth mouthfeel. Would recommend, and will seek again.

Wow, what a lack of carbonation in this black and brown beer. Aroma didn't give much in the chili department, it had lots of roast though.

Taste gave some chili flavors, very minimal though. Mild Mexican chocolate. Cinnamon is there. Very thick viscosity. I gotta say, most of this series of beer I've had has been pretty underwhelming given its reputation.
