Hunahpu's Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel-AgedHunahpu's Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel-Aged
Notes: El Catador Club Exclusives

Central to Mayan mythology is the story of twin brothers named Xbalanque and Hunahpu, the Hero Twins. After the Twins’ father was murdered by evil deities from Xibalba, his corpse became a cacao tree that spawned our two Heroes. Epic adventures followed, culminating in a journey to Xibalba to avenge their fathers’ death. Vanquishing their enemies handily, the Heroes then ascended unto the heavens where they became the sun and the moon.

Imperial Stout brewed with Ancho and Pasilla chile peppers, cinnamon, vanilla and cacao nibs aged in white oak barrels previously used to age bourbon.

OG: 30
IBU: 80

Tasting Notes:
Cinnamon, vanilla and bakers chocolate are assertive on the nose with rustic wood and molasses playing supporting roles. Viscous and assertive on the tongue, baking spices meld with fresh ground coffee, dates and fudge as this massive beer coats the palate. Mild scoville heat builds with each sip but never overwhelms the bourbon spiciness or the nuanced finish of this truly complex stout.

Pours black with a tan head. Smells of chocolate, bits of chilies, cinnamon, and of course wonderful bourbon. The flavor is incredible chocolate, bourbon and oak, some vanilla with that great hit of chilies on the back end. Amazing, just amazing I need this on tap at my house like everyday :)

Big thanks to Hank for sharing this at a mega tasting!

Pours black and viscous like the other variants. A lack of head is a bit disconcerting though.

Super bourbon and vanilla aromas emanate. Strong oak presence as well. Not getting the chili and vanilla as much.

Strong bourbon oak flavor. Slight herbal nature from the peppers. Wonderfully complex.

Great mouthfeel like the others.

Overall another really interesting variation.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting this moment since the first time I tongued the original batch at the brewery in early 20…10, I believe. And now it’s here. It’s like Christmas porn! Split with my wife.

Angels whisper in anticipation as the black liquid flows into my glass, oh, wait, my wife’s glass too. I take a few secret sips of hers, & a little I leave in the bottle too (don’t tell her – there are knives in the house & I sleep hard). Smells like sweet bourbon aged cinnamon. Is that a thing? It should be.

Hunahpu’s – Bourbon Barrel Aged is another phenomenal extension of a world-class beer. Everything from the base beer is here to some extent: cinnamon (ramped up), vanilla (really ramped up), chilis (quieter), chocolate (quietest), though there is a bigger sweetness & a belly-warming alcohol wallop that regular Huna doesn’t pack. Bourbon wends its way through the ingredient list, not dominating, not wilting, but standing ass-to-ass with the great base beer, complementing it like Anthony Weiner snapchatting a 16 year old. The heat doesn’t build in the mouth, but down there where acid reflux starts. Thick. So easy to drink, I might not tell my wife there’s a second bottle. Anybody know a good lawyer?

I am sad this is gone. My glass is empty, & my soul feels like it’s in a similar state. An elite beer that should be a staple in my fridge. Make it happen, CC.

Tasted from bottle. 17 version. Black with minimal beige head. Aroma is a little smokey, roasted, bourbon, cured meats, bourbon. Flavors of bourbon, toffee, caramel, cocoa, cinnamon, slight chili. Complex and delicious.

On-tap at the Hunahpu release. Poured into a CCB snifter.

A: Opaque. Black, just like the original. Fluffy mocha head, but no lacing to this one.

A: Burbon shoots out of the nose. I think this actually takes away from the score, the regular Hunahpu's nose is sweet chocolate and vanilla, and even though I get those aromas, the burbon masks them.

T: I get the burbon straight away, followed by the chocolate and vanilla. Again, I think the barrel inhibits the brew rather then making it something better. Finishes very smooth.

M: Full body, quite a bit of carbonation for the style. But still very creamy.

D and overall impression: Drinkability is a little lower for me. I just can't get past the big burbon. Overall, I really liked this beer, but I don't think it lived up to the original. This is still a damn good brew. Skal.

750ml bottle poured into a snifter. It poured pitch black in color with a thin, bubbly, tan colored head to it. Decent lacing on the glass as I drank it. Great looking beer of the style, very thick, dark and inviting.

The aroma shows a good amount of the barrel character to it with some really nice bourbon and woody oak flavors. The dark chocolate, vanilla and roasty flavors of Hunahpu come out nicely as well. I get just a little of the pepper spice to it as it warmed. The bourbon flavors really complimented the beer nicely and it came together very well.

In the taste I get a great mix of bourbon and dark chocolate right off the bat. The finish shows a little more of the woody oak and vanilla flavors along with a little of the bitter, roasted malts. Again, just a little of the pepper spice comes though. The bourbon and chocolate flavors in it were awesome.

The mouthfeel is thick and heavy with carbonation being moderate to low. Overall it was a great beer. The bourbon really complimented the beer well and didn't overpower it for the most part either. It did seem to cover up some of the pepper and spice though that makes Hunahpu so unique though. It had some great flavors to it overall though and it brought them all together very well.

Growler shared at a tasting - huge thanks to illidurit for this awesome rarity. Well, this beer is currently at #5 on "the other site," and I can't say I disagree too strongly. Joey and Wayne at CCB really do fulfill beer geeks' wildest dreams. Met those guys at GABF '09, and surprisingly, they seemed like normal guys and not all-powerful deities floating on clouds or anything like that. Who knew? Anyway, the beer may not have held up too well by the time it got to me, so my suggestion to CCB is to arrange to send me a better representation of this beer, and hell, maybe I'll find it worthy of my first perfect 5.0. Definitely has that potential.

This beer pours black with not much head at all, just a bubble or two. Could be a result of the storage conditions for sure.

Aroma is absolutely incredible. Rich chocolate, cherry, vanilla, cedar and other wood, bourbon, cinnamon, tobacco, and chili peppers. Even with a small pour in less than ideal condition, it really jumps out at you. Wow.

Flavor not quite as impressive but still amazing. Roast and smoke, coffee, bitter cocoa, bourbon, vanilla, tobacco, vanilla, coconut, and nice chili heat. Really a lot going on with this one. Bourbon is very well-balanced and not at all overwhelming like it can be in some beers from such barrels.

Full and smooth on the palate with very low carbonation, not surprisingly.

Drinkability is incredibly high for a beer like this. Even though I gave this beer a very positive review, I don't feel like this really got a fair shake, so stay tuned for a future update. It's hard to imagine how awesome this might be on tap.
