Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 14.60%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
El Catador Club Exclusives

Central to Mayan mythology is the story of twin brothers named Xbalanque and Hunahpu, the Hero Twins. After the Twins’ father was murdered by evil deities from Xibalba, his corpse became a cacao tree that spawned our two Heroes. Epic adventures followed, culminating in a journey to Xibalba to avenge their fathers’ death. Vanquishing their enemies handily, the Heroes then ascended unto the heavens where they became the sun and the moon.

Imperial Stout brewed with Ancho and Pasilla chile peppers, cinnamon, vanilla and cacao nibs aged in white oak barrels previously used to age bourbon.

OG: 30
IBU: 80

Tasting Notes:
Cinnamon, vanilla and bakers chocolate are assertive on the nose with rustic wood and molasses playing supporting roles. Viscous and assertive on the tongue, baking spices meld with fresh ground coffee, dates and fudge as this massive beer coats the palate. Mild scoville heat builds with each sip but never overwhelms the bourbon spiciness or the nuanced finish of this truly complex stout.

The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a tan head. The aroma is bourbon, oak, chocolate and pepper. The flavor is strong oak, chocolate and pepper, with the pepper being a little overpowering and giving a light burning sensation in the mouth. Thick mouthfeel and low-medium carbonation.

Shared with friends at CBC Como on 1-27-18. 2017 version(blue label). Pours about as black as it gets with no real head to speak of. Great nose, with hints of cinnamon and spice predominant, and a hint of barrel. From there, I guess I was a bit let down. Having the regular version on a few occasions, I was expecting the barrel treatment to give this beer a boost. Instead, the flavors come off a little muddled. Yes, I got some cinnamon, cocoa, and chilies(most unaffected), but they were struggling to the forefront with the presence of the barrel itself.

Bourbon is soft, well balanced and tones down the cinnamon, chocolate and other notes. Silky smooth mouth feel; easy on the palate. Worth the bottle...Prost!!

Bottle (2011)

Thanks for opening this with me, VaTechHopHead!

(Aged for 1 year)

Black on black with a small espresso brown head. Spots of lacing left down the glass. Thick and rich looking. Nobody makes better looking imperial stouts than Cigar City.

Earthy and bittersweet aroma of chocolate and char, along with vanilla and rich barrel character. There's perhaps a touch of a vegetable aroma.

The flavor is just a spectacular combination of chocolate, vanilla, molasses, char, and barrel. This is a transformed beer, and doesn't particularly resemble Hunahpu's.

Full bodied with low carbonation. Creamy, silky mouthfeel.

Very, very good, though the apple brandy and whiskey variations are better.

10oz. Pour into a CCB Snifter

Pours pitch black with a fluffy dark tan head. Big toasty nose with a big bourbon presence. Taste is dark chocolate with a touch of heat from the peppers and a wonderful bourbon overtone. This beer took to the barrel wonderfully. Great marriage of flavors. Mouthfeel is big and creamy. Would have loved another pour, but at $10 for 10oz. I'll have to move on. Glad I tried it though, would definitely revisit if I had the chance.

Drank at NWIBDU tasting. Thanks!

S - Bourbon, vanilla, light pepper and cinnamon 4.25

T - Caramel, dark fudge, light bourbon sweetness, cinnamon spice but not as much as the cinnamon. Light astringency in the finish where the booze is more prominent than normal 4.5

M - Thick and creamy with light astringency from the whiskey.

O - Good beer with more complexity that the normal Huna. Not as good as the whiskey but the bourbon adds some nice sweetness

Cigar City Takes NYC event at Rattle 'N' Hum. A great start. Aroma of pepper and bourbon come through. This is black with no head, understated carbonation. Above average mouthfeel. The peppers come through giving the whole RIS an interesting and complex taste.
Had this in bottle two years later and it was very good, though not as good as the non-BBA.

Had this one on tap side-by-side with the regular version at the Cigar City Brings Everything event at Rattle n Hum 2/17. Served out of a wine glass because they ran out of glassware.

A: Served with a slight wisp of chocolatiness floating at the top of dark abyss of a beer. Lacing is stringy with near no cling, emanating from the brew like some kind of disfigured rag puppet.

S: Bourbon hits hard upfront and this provides an outstanding background to the sweet and bitter cocoa powder and chocolatiness that come afterwards. A weird spiciness is apparent somewhere in there but is hard to make out over the bourbon.

T: Bourbon aging produces a profound overwhleming taste that covers what is otherwise an incredibly complex brew. Can you tell that I think this is one of the only beers that DOESN'T benefit from barrel-aging? Cocoa and chocolate are noticeable beneath along with a sweet spiciness towards the finish. Bourbon lingers towards the end though and never really fades out, dominating the other delicate flavors. Finish is more of the same, though thankfully, does not linger on the palate.

M: Medium to full bodied with very little carbonation and very very smooth. However, bourbon barrel aging makes this one just a bit around the edges and I'm docking .5 for this. Oily in the mouth with a surprisingly clean finish that leaves little stickiness or aftertaste at all.

D: As I've stated before, this is one of those beers that does NOT benefit from barrel-aging in my opinion. The regular version is far superior because of an unmasked complexity and knowing that that is out there, I can only give this a 4.5 as good as it is. Still, one of the most enjoyable RISs that I've ever had because of its smoothness and unique combination of cocoa, chocolate, and chili spices.

750ml bottle, 2017 release. Bottling date of 08/16/18 etched on the neck of the bottle. Bourbon and oak dominate the nose with more moderate notes of cinnamon and peppers. The smell definitely gets better as it warms with the bourbon barrel notes dominating and also the cinnamon, chile peppers, and cacao nibs that make the regular Hunahpu’s so amazing are hiding behind the barrel notes. The taste is all the great flavors of Hunahpu’s with a slightly spicy and warming finish.
