Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 14.60%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
El Catador Club Exclusives

Central to Mayan mythology is the story of twin brothers named Xbalanque and Hunahpu, the Hero Twins. After the Twins’ father was murdered by evil deities from Xibalba, his corpse became a cacao tree that spawned our two Heroes. Epic adventures followed, culminating in a journey to Xibalba to avenge their fathers’ death. Vanquishing their enemies handily, the Heroes then ascended unto the heavens where they became the sun and the moon.

Imperial Stout brewed with Ancho and Pasilla chile peppers, cinnamon, vanilla and cacao nibs aged in white oak barrels previously used to age bourbon.

OG: 30
IBU: 80

Tasting Notes:
Cinnamon, vanilla and bakers chocolate are assertive on the nose with rustic wood and molasses playing supporting roles. Viscous and assertive on the tongue, baking spices meld with fresh ground coffee, dates and fudge as this massive beer coats the palate. Mild scoville heat builds with each sip but never overwhelms the bourbon spiciness or the nuanced finish of this truly complex stout.

Barrel-Aged Hunahpu's tasting! Thanks to all the guys in the tasting group who helped make this happen.

The beer is, like all of the Hunahpu's variants, profoundly dark. Ominous black with a thick, oily beige head. An awesome appearance for an imperial stout. Lacing stains the glass.

The aroma brings a heavy dose of bourbon, with mild hints of roast and chocolate. Smells good, but is less aggressive than I was expecting.

The flavor is predominantly bourbon, with light chocolate and roast.

Silky smooth feel with fairly low carbonation.

Overall, another delicious stout from Cigar City. Not the best bourbon barrel stout i have had, but still quite tasty. Very glad to have tried this.

Another excellent RIS from the finewinemike event.

After sampling the rum and whiskey version of this great beer, the bourbon version was simply more of the same, but this time with a lovely bourbon flavor. As before, the beer pours a blackish brown color with good head retention and considerable, espresso color lacing. The nose had everything I've come to now expect in this beer (dark chocolate, vanilla, licorice and bourbon), except this beer seemed to have more of roasty component, and I picked up less coffee and malt balls. On the palate it was just more of the same, except this time with some nice bourbon (that I did not think was overdone) interwoven around the dark chocolate, light vanilla and coffee. Mouthfeel was full, plush, soft and very long, with the alcohol very nicely integrated into the flavor profile. Just an all around excellent beer.

Frankly, I have not been all that big of fan of Cigar City, but the three barrel aged Hunaphpu beers have given me a whole new understanding and appreciation of this brewery.

This was the third variation we opened up at finewinemike's tasting. Poured from a bottle into my Colossus snifter.

Appearance: Pours dark as night and extremely thick. There is a layer of dark tan head that fades to a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Sweet with some dark fruit, cocoa, and some heat from the whiskey and the chilies. I'm picking up a faint caramel smell from the bourbon barrels.

Taste: Roasty with lots of dark chocolate and chilies. Definitely some heat from the bourbon barrels. Vanilla and some wood with a roasty, hot finish.

Mouthfeel: This version was a bit thinner than the others. The carbonation is tingly and the finish is a bit dry.

Overall: This one was less full, so that was a bit of a let down. Still amazing and I would love to have it again.

750ml bottle poured into a CCB snifter.

Pours a dark, inky black with a very slight mocha ring. Nice aromas of chocolate and dark malt with Bourbon notes of caramel, oak, and vanilla. Not getting a ton of the chili/cinnamon character in this version. Bit more character in the taste, lots of Bourbon, chocolate brownie batter, vanilla, oak, and spices. Getting a bit of heat from the chili peppers, but not as much as the other variants. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with a full mouthfeel and good carbonation. Overall a really nice beer, but surprisingly ranked fourth out of the variants (Rum>Whiskey>Virgin Oak>Bourbon)!

Bottle shared by Stawn, thanks! Snifter.

A: Looks like motor oil as it glugs out of the bottle. Black as pitch with a finger of dark brown foam.

S: Cinnamon with a big bourbon presence. Peppers are restrained and vanilla is pronounced. The nose gives the impression of caramel drizzled dark chocolate cake.

T: Cinnamon is stronger in the flavor, as are the chilies and they impart light spicy notes. Bourbon is pronounced and it blends with cocoa nibs, vanilla, and oak. Malt it moderately roasted. Booze is evident but not inappropriate. There's a moderate bitterness throughout.

M: Full in body with lower moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is chewy, smooth, and sticky.

Overall: Really good. The bourbon works really well with Hunahpu's.

Pours a big rich thick black with a super dark brown head.
Nose is big and sweet hitting hitting me with cocoa up front then a little bourbon and wood.
First sip I'm hit with the big cocoa and a warm bourbon center, there is some nice oaky notes, I get some vanilla in there and some nice heat at the end from the chilles. As the beer warms up lots more bourbon is coming out.
The mouthfeel is big, thick, rich, with medium mouthfeel and a big full body.
This beer is great, tons of flavor blended together in a beautiful way.

A- Black as night body with thick dark brown head. Really great look.

S-Wonderful array of smells that include bourbon, dark chocolate and smoked wood.

T-At first taste you expect to get a strong bourbon flavor but instead you taste a wonderful deep chocolate flavor with only hints of bourbon. My favorite part of this beer is the ending. As you finish the sip you get a unique smoky flavor. It is completely unexpected but it is welcoming flavor.

M-A very heavy creamy beer. Mild carbonation

O-My favorite beer ever? Idk maybe. Would like to have other Bourbon Barreled Stouts like KBS to try along side of it. But never the less, it is truly a wonderful beer from hands down favorite brewery.

Thanks to bdige for bringing this one out. 750ml from the recent release - green wax.

Pours like oil with low carbonation. The head is very dark brown. Huge legs on the glass.

Smells like a tasty dark chocolate bar and a bunch of vanilla. Some bourbon is in the back, but it's not very boozy.

Taste is substantially different than the normal Hunahpu's. Instead of a strong cayenne flavor, the heat is almost completely faded and only exists in a very small tingling under the other flavors. The beer is extremely chocolaty and thick. Vanilla is very pronounced and the bourbon is decently integrated, but it's not exactly layered with flavor.

Mouthfeel is super thick with low carbonation.

Overall tasty and I think I like it a bit better than regular Hunahpu's due to the lack of heat.

This beer was enjoyed alongside all of the rest of the versions and with each of the spirits.

Pours the characteristic black with little head and thin brown-gold edges. The smell is of the huge chocolate and roasted malts and an amazing flavor of vanilla, bourbon and oak sweetness. This was the best smelling of all of the varieties and the only thing getting a 5 in any category. I smelled this beer for a while. The taste is the characteristic Huna flavors, with very subdued chili flavors and big cocoa but with just an unpleasant integration of the bourbon. The vanilla, bourbon and oak from the nose don't seem to happen correctly in the taste. Makes you wish it wasn't aged in that barrel. Mouthfeel is huge as you would expect. Overall, this was near the bottom of the BA Hunas which went: Apple Brandy > Rum >> Whiskey > Bourbon >> Virgin Oak. Super glad to have tried it, but it's not entirely clear to me that these beers should be in barrels. The whiskey tasted better until the finish, whereas this was a mess for taste all the way through. This beer did smell delicious though.

Bottle. Thanks to Matlzilla for sharing this one. Boozy/bourbon nose. Joan Jett black pour with a chocolate head. Thick, chewy, robust, lots of mellow bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon, dark roasted malts, and heat from the peppers. Fan-freakin-tastic...
