Jai Alai IPA - White OakJai Alai IPA - White Oak

Brewed by:
Cigar City Brewing
Florida, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This is an American White Oak-aged version of Jai Alai India Pale Ale. The white oak adds smoothing notes of vanilla and slight hints of dill to the aroma and flavor profile. The finish is elegantly dry due to the light tannin notes from oak aging and though still loaded with hop flavor, hop bitterness is more restrained.

Pours a clearish amber color with a finger's worth of off-white head. It has a sudsy texture with good retention and many webs of lacing left behind.

Despite only being one and a half months old, stale and muted hops pervade the aroma. I guess twinges of pine, grapefruit, and grass show up. On the other hand, oak and vanilla are prominent - it doesn't quite make up for the assertive caramel malt profile. All in all, it's not a very showy nose.

Taste follows suit. It starts with a moderate piny bitterness, giving way to a sweet caramel middle. The finish is the most interesting aspect: notes of oak, vanilla, and tobacco are offered. However, bitterness becomes uncontrolled on the lingering aftertaste. It has muted flavors, no balance, and too much of a bitter bite. Translation: it doesn't work.

This is a full bodied brew that's semi-creamy and off-dry. To me, it just reinforces the bitterness excessively. Carbonation is moderate and oak tannins are gentle.

To be frank, this isn't my thing. The oak is too weak to compensate for the effects of aging plain ol' Jai Alai. This is highly mediocre, and I will not buy it again.

2.71/5: Wood-aged IPAs are just a flawed style

Look: It pours golden and clear with a large head head. Head retention is good. there is plenty of lacing as well.

Smell: Aromas of citrus and pine are the first aromas. There are background notes of vanilla and wood.

Taste: There is a bountiful, burst of flavors. There are strong notes of citrus and stone fruit. There are background notes of vanilla, pine, wood, and toast.

Feel: It has a moderate body with moderately high bitterness that is long lasting through the finish.

Overall, this IPA has a lot of aroma and flavor that is not so bitter as to not have a couple in a sitting.

pours a cloudy marmalade color with a medium head that poofs. nose; oak, light mango, & juicy citrus hops (cascade/amarillo). interesting; the nose here is subdued from the regular jai alai - perhaps the aging has mellowed it out some. taste; easy caramel malt, lightly puckering oak tannin, clementine, light vanilla, underripe mango, orange zest, & citrus hops. the aging definitely adds a tropical/drupe flare to this variation. aftertaste is lightly dry & grassy, with another round of the oak notes on the back end. heavily carbonated & medium mouthfeel. what can i say... regular jai alai scores big with me, and this version adds stone fruit & wood into the equation; it's hard to imagine any ipa drinker not loving it. another cigar city winner!

Appearance - Pours deep copper color with decent white head. Spotty lacing around the glass.

Aroma - Mostly tropical aromas peach, orange, mango and pineapple. You can also smell the oak just a touch, smells of pine as well.

Taste - The tropical notes give way to the bitter grapefruit and orange peel. The oak plays a larger part in the flavor as well.

Feel - Medium bodied well carbonated pretty dry and bitter finish.

Overall - A decent beer I think the oak is a little overpowering in the taste.

Interesting is the first words that come to mind. That can be good or bad in this case it's good. You get a lot of oak in the nose and a very smooth oak taste. Taste of oak mingles with citrus peel, grapefruit and grasses. Very dry finish that is exemplified by the dry oakyness of this beer. I didn't think I would like this as much as I did.

From the bottom of the can: "CANNED ON 03/20/17 CHEERS 28965"

Appearance: The body is golden orange with a lot of suspended solids and some haze. the head is rocky and white with very good retention and lacing.

Aroma: I get a huge burst of peach mixed with garlic and onion following suit. Subsequent sniffs give notes of tangerine and clementine oranges. It has an intoxicating aroma.

Taste: There is this big peach flavor to the beer that tastes like the area right at the pit. It's absolutely fantastic. It's the kind of flavor that you just drink and drink and don't get tired of. There is this light vanilla flavor that starts to build up on the palate and it kind-of tastes like peaches and cream after a bit.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium-to-light body with a smooth velvety texture that isn't normally present in an IPA. The texture really works for this beer and gives it this added quality or value to the beer that elevates the overall experience.

Overall: I was very satisfied with the beer overall. It's the kind of beer that you taste, wonder if it was really that good or your imagination, taste it again, and repeat the process over and over. This beer adds an extra component to the already delicious Jai Alai that would be very hard to beat. I would urge people to seek out this beer and taste how fantastic it is. I will be buying more of it.

I love Jai Alai, and this just adds to it. Wonderful oak aroma, and it still retains that juicy citrusy hoppiness of "regular" Jai Alai. A truly outstanding IPA. Lot's of depth, yet very drinkable.
