thrilled to be able to get a growler of this one. capped my night of dark ccb beers off very, very nicely. served cold and allowed to warm in the growler of the course of several hours. this one was consumed on 09/25/2010.

pours out a deep dark brown color, nearly black but with a huge foamy tan head that reaches about two fingers in height. taking a looonngggg time to settle down it left a ton of lacing all over the glass.

aroma is very complex. deep roasted malts, nice touches of rich roasted malts, and a nice spicy touch of rye that kicks in at just the right level. warming brings out a light touch of coffee now as well. again not forced at all, the aroma really is very nicely presented. a nice full bodied feel, but not overly thick. the chocolate hits you right from the start, a very nice way to start i might add. rye comes in mid palate and gives you that little spike of flavor you were looking for. smoothing this out with roasted malts and a smooth and creamy finish is just icing on the cake.

overall a very solid beer here. more of a stout then a rye beer but i really did enjoy this over the course of the night for sure.

On tap at CCB

A: Pours a nice dark black with a small tan ring. Light retention and some spotty lace.

S: Aromas of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee.

T: The rye is there in the flavor with a nice bold roast. Chocolate malt mostly with hints of deep roasted coffee. and a hint of char.

M: Medium in body, smooth, long dry finish.

D: Good another solid offering by CCB.

I had the Death Metal at the tasting room. Served in a 6 oz snifter. The beer was jet black. It wasnt as thick as the Zhukov, but it did have a bit of viscosity to it. The smell was robust of toasted rye, coffee, and some earthy notes. The first sip was satisfying. I think it was served a bit too cold for me. I like my heavy stouts a bit on the warmer side. 50-55 degrees. The taste was very dry. lots of roasted coffee with the rye at the end. A good solid rye. Nothing to fill a growler for though.

Had this a few times before it was named... I couldn't have dreamed it would wind up with such an awesome moniker.

A - Looks jet black with a respectable and persistent khaki cap of froth.

S - I get a lot of delectable roasted characteristics, specifically the most pleasant aspects of chocolate, coffee and fresh hop. I am not detecting the more challenging nuances possible in RIS/2xIS such as tobacco, asphalt, or charred whatever... In other words, it is a very inviting aromatic.

T - JFC! Where to begin?!? It is just straight-up delicious, first of all... It is full of chocolate and roasty tones with a plentiful allotment of herbal-green hoppiness; though rye is not specifically discernible to me, it is merely a seeming incongruity between name and product and not a qualitative observation whatsoever... It is so sublimely flavorful; it sustains the complexity of flavor, maintains superb balance and is fabricated of the very substance of desirability.

M - Outstanding. Not as rich or viscous as many, but far more drinkable than any stout in mind.

D - Awesome; in the uppermost region of the top tier of CCBs.
