Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Georgy Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II. Specifically, it is dedicated to the push by Zhukov's 1st Belorussian Front of the Red Army through the German-occupied territory of East Prussia in early 1945., setting the stage for the Red Army's final maneuver into Berlin to end the war. Freshly roasted coffee beans and vanilla were added to this juggernaut of an imperial stout, the only style of beer bold and strong enough to share its name with The Marshall himself.

Pours an opaque black with one finger of dense dark brown foam, settles in a minute to a thin cap, and, in true Zhukovian fashion leaves behind both a bit of streaky lace and stains the glass. Smell: plenty of earthy and roasty espresso, caramel, vanilla, a little fig and currant. Taste: vanilla, currant, fig, caramel, roasty espresso, cocoa / bitter chocolate, earthy and mild clean hop bitterness.. just enough, along with a little booze note, to cut through the sweet. Full bodied, with low-moderate carbonation, velvety and thick, with a sticky dark chocolate and vanilla bean finish. The vanilla and coffee really stand up to the Marshal's hefty roast character without taking center stage.

Finally found a Marshall Zhukov beer and decided to splurge. Had on tap. Pours opaque, dark black in color with minimal head. Taste is char, coffee, dark chocolate, and dark cherries. Very heavy bodied, chewy, decadent, roasty and sweet with low carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden. Makes for an amazing sipper. Coffee is the dominant flavor, but even as a non-coffee drinker, I could appreciate this one as the coffee blends well with the other stout flavors. Super tasty and up there with the best stouts I have had in the past year.

O-a nice variant but not as robust for me as the BB version. A little light on the vanilla. Very close to standard MZ with a bit more toasty, coffee flavor.

Reviewed on draft 3/27/17.

A: Dark, thick, black, oily. Two fingers of cinnamon-/mocha-colored head. Ominous.

S: Bitter cocoa nibs, lotsa roasted malts, and a healthy dose of earthy Noble hops. Hint of pepper skin, some leather, more molasses. Big nose, pops out of the glass.

T: Very different from the taste.. Huge milk chocolate, medium- to dark-roast coffee, and a great vanilla finish. Chocolate fudge punches you in the face on the frontend, along with some roasted malt / coffee. Mid-palate is where it gets more complex, with the appearance of molasses and some licorice quickly followed by a gentle kiss of vanilla (that fades rather quickly as it warms). Very fudgy and dessert-y, but the roastiness of the malt and bitterness of the hops balance the sweetness quite well.

M: Thick. Rich. Fudgy. Coats the mouth and sticks to everything it touches. Quite sweet, but with a healthy dose of bitterness to offer some balance. Did I mention this was rich?

O: Very good coffee/cocoa/vanilla RIS that fails to fall into any of the typical traps that these adjuncts stouts tend to.. There's a lot going on here, but it's all somewhat balanced, with no single component overwhelming the others. The distance between the nose and the taste is odd, but I'm not totally offended by it. The mouthfeel is ridiculous, on par with some of the thickest imperial stouts I've had. Overall, if they could dial in that nose a bit more, this would be ridiculous. But as it stands, it's a great beer worth seeking out for sure.

Kinda pricey but I got one anyway and am glad I did. I think I still like the "just" MZukov a tad better but this has some nice flavor add ins.

Dark ebony brew, with a dark brown head with fantastic strength and retention.

Coffee and roast on the nose, restrained and inviting.

Coffee, vanilla, and chocolate on the palate. A touch of alcohol heat up front, but smooth roast from there. Nice level of char, present without dominating.

Hazelnut kiss on the finish well after you're expecting anything new from this beer. Fleeting notes of vanilla and roast.

Nice thick and sticky feel.

Fantastic beer!

22oz. bomber into a Surly teku. Shared with schen9303.

Nose is creamy hops, lactose, coffee, smoke, roasted malt and semi-sweet chocolate. Deep and rich with a unique combination of flavors. Beer opens with a creamy hop bitterness mixed with smoke and roasted coffee beans. Chocolate, molasses and lactose in the middle with a roasty, smoky finish punctuated by a creamy bitterness. Super heavy on the coffee and not overly sweet. This is pretty good. Full bodied with low carbonation. Smooth and rich on the palate and goes down dry with a filmy finish.

I've wanted to try this for a long time and it really lives up to the hype. Great balance in flavor with a huge coffee punch that other coffee stouts should strive for.

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2017, red session. Aroma has roasted malt and dark chocolate. Taste starts bitter and roasty with baker's chocolate but continues with malt sweetness and a hint of caramel.
