Cucumber SaisonCucumber Saison
Notes: We employ the humble cucumber in a low gravity Saison to create a vibrant ale with notes of melon, tropical fruit, lemongrass and, of course, cucumber. Put some cucumber wheels on your eyes, relax, and enjoy. Ahhhh.

Cucumis sativus, is the fruit off the vine in the family Cucurbitaceae, a botanical category that includes watermelons and squashes. The cucumber is usually underappreciated in a salad and definitely not thought of much in beer. It elicits strong pent up childhood emotions of being forced fed your vegetables. Cucumber definitely is more noticeable in aroma than in its subtle flavor notes. It has a watery melony taste so think of it as a fruit which is its correct classification and when you think of it that way it is easier to envision cucumber in beer. This Cucumber Saison has elicited strong diametrically opposing emotions of hating it or loving it. Of course there are those in the middle ground in their evaluation of this beer. Draft magazine rated this beer in 2012 as of its top 25. I am not willing to go that far but I will say this – this beer has a melony and lemon citrus aroma with a yellow- gold clarity to it - nice to look at, pleasant on the nose. The beer has more of a cucumber flavor than an actual cucumber and is nicely balanced with the hops and citrus. Moderately carbonated – it has a clean refreshing finish leaving you want for more.

Arrives a bright, clear yellow with a small white head. Scottered lace remains.
Smell is well balanced with malt, cucumber and a light wood note.
Taste is exactly the same. A well balanced blend of cucumber, malt, light wood and maybe a touch of citrus.
Fairly smooth, well, but not overly, carbonated. Lightly drying and really refreshing.
I was leery of this one, I mean cucumber? Really? Figured it would be too light or overwhelming. Wrong.

Do you like cucumbers? Do you like water? Then this is the beer for you...do you like saisons? Skip this beer, this is not a saison in any sense of the world. On draft at Churchkey served in a snifter. Beer is yellow and clear with a white head of medium and large bubbles, low retention, moderate carbonation, looks fine.

Aroma is cucumbers, about what I expected and it smells good.

Beer is thin like water and wet like water and tastes like cucumbers. Is this beer? Next.

A: Hazy golden color with a one finger bone white head. Lots of carbonation visible in the glass.

S: Lots and lots of cucumber in here. Some wet wood, dill and honeydew as well, but there's absolutely no doubt who the star of the show is here.

T: Again, tons and tons of cucumber. The taste hits right away and carries through every single part of this beer. A bit of sour pickle flavor in the middle before a finish that's all cucumber. Slight hints of grain and wheat, but again, this is definitely a cucumber beer. Mouthfeel is slick, a little oily and may be just a touch heavy for this. In small amounts this is awesome. There's really no saison here, but as a cucumber beer, this is really cool to try.

Appearance: Well, it's an impressive pour, all right, with a massive head sitting atop the cloudy straw-colored liquid

Smell: Fresh dill and cucumbers - we are on our way to the pickle factory

Taste: Cucumber and dill, with an underlying grainy character that tastes more like a Lager than a Saison; grainy, in the finish, as well, with cucumber and dill flavors holding their own

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with high carbonation

Overall: Well, I am glad I tried it and, while I like cucumbers and I like pickles, I didn't much care for them in a beer; my scores are higher than otherwise out of respect for the creativity

Pretty good beer except the cuke goes a long way. Poured at a good temperature with a nice, billowy, foamy, off-white head that settles after a bit and a smidgen of lace. Color is a a hazy amber. Flavor's like nose, cuke really dominates and offsets all the other qualities. Body and carbonation are good. Finish is like flavor, with the cuke wasn't so assertive, not a repeater.
