L: HUGE frothy head. Pours a hazy straw color.

S: I think someone switched my beer glass with a jar of dill pickles ‘cause this smells like straight-up cucumbers…and little else. Some spice, but not like that of a typical saison.

T: The saison character comes out a bit more in the taste. Semi-dry upfront, finishing quite dry with only a slight bitterness as a residual flavor. The lemony and citrusy nature of the Sorachi Ace and Citra hops shine through a bit. Refreshing, to say the least.

F: Prickly and very light bodied. It’s got that refreshing, drinkable quality I think the brewers were shooting for, though the carbonation can be a bit overbearing.

O: Though I'm not entirely sure how to classify it, this is very unique and pretty darn good beer. With a really pronounced cucumber character, it's a thirstquencher for sure. If it were feasible here in NY, I could see this being a go-to for me in the summer months.

Cucumis sativus, is the fruit off the vine in the family Cucurbitaceae, a botanical category that includes watermelons and squashes. The cucumber is usually underappreciated in a salad and definitely not thought of much in beer. It elicits strong pent up childhood emotions of being forced fed your vegetables. Cucumber definitely is more noticeable in aroma than in its subtle flavor notes. It has a watery melony taste so think of it as a fruit which is its correct classification and when you think of it that way it is easier to envision cucumber in beer. This Cucumber Saison has elicited strong diametrically opposing emotions of hating it or loving it. Of course there are those in the middle ground in their evaluation of this beer. Draft magazine rated this beer in 2012 as of its top 25. I am not willing to go that far but I will say this – this beer has a melony and lemon citrus aroma with a yellow- gold clarity to it - nice to look at, pleasant on the nose. The beer has more of a cucumber flavor than an actual cucumber and is nicely balanced with the hops and citrus. Moderately carbonated – it has a clean refreshing finish leaving you want for more.

22 oz. bomber, tulip

A – Light to medium gold with very high clarity. Continues to bubble and effervesce for a while. An inch of white to slightly off-white foam, which leaves quickly.

S – The clear first impression is the cucumber, which comes across more as a pickle relish aroma, sweet with some tangy sourness. This sounds gross, but it isn’t, instead contributing a garden-like freshness. Very fresh cut impression of the vegetable. Some light crackery malt, along with a touch of black pepper. Hop aroma, if any, is covered up by the cuke aroma.

T – The first flavor is crackery malt, pale or possible Pils, and the cucumber follows, much more moderate in taste than in the aroma. Again, the freshly cut, slightly pickly raw cucumber, the essence really captured here. Only a low peppery note, along with some mild herbal hopping.

M – High carbonation and a medium body, moderately dry throughout. A very, very minor puckering sour quality from the cucumber. Goes down very easy.

O – If you like cucumbers, or better yet pickles, this is an ultimate lawnmower beer, very unique and refreshing. It could have easily turned out like your college buddy’s awful experimental homebrew, but I think there’s a lot to offer here. A fresh salad in a bottle, for whatever that’s worth.

Do you like cucumber? If not, then keep moving. Why people who don't like cucumber try this beer and are then dissapointed eludes me. A bit more complexity would make this perfect.

Really like this one. Received as an extra in the trade and admittedly I was not too excited about it as I was thinking, "oh great, a vegetable beer." But I was wrong as it is excellent. The cucumber flavor walks a fine line between subtle and moderate but regardless, it adds a real interesting twist to the beer and a very nice balance. The end result is a somewhat dry, but highly drinkable beer.
