One of better barleywines I have had to date.
I would easily put this in my top five. Quite good and left wanting more.

16th Level Paladin thanks to Capt Cleveland for this extra - yes, extra - rec'd in a summertime trade. I like to fancy myself a pretty good trader, but, damn. 12 oz. bottle, one-time.

The pour is like a brown & red, dark no-see-um brown on the bottom, with a distinct red hue floating to the top. Carbonation is on the low side. Fairly reeks of the barrel, but my palette of colors isn't subtle enough to pick out the cognac: more like port, with a big shot of oak. Base beer is hard to detect except for mild spicing. Still. Good.

Cheers! has a lot of true port characteristics. The hearty fruitiness & cognac conspire to give me flashbacks to Portugal, in a lovely bottle shop in Fatima where we rec'd an impromptu lesson on the different varieties of the lovely national drink. Boozy, with almost brandy-like highlights, partially melted caramel squares, maple, toffee. Oak kicks into gear at the end. Twelve ounces of this is criminal. I could use another twelve. Gallons. Sipping this like it's closing time in five minutes.

Wow. The different flashes of hard alcohol & abyss of complexity make this a huge winner. Not sure if time has had that much of a leavening effect, but I'm having trouble picking nits out of this beer. Big, tasty, gorgeous, one can see the lineage of Leon & Church on a Hill in this bottle. Excellent. excellent beer.

12oz bottle very generously given to me by a CC employee for helping them at a beer festival. Poured into a Cigar City snifter...1000th review on BA.

A - Pours a dark brown color with some mahogany in it. Decent clarity, but noticeable floating particulate in the body of the beer. A small 1/2 finger of off white foam forms briefly and fizzes away to the surface fairly quickly leaving behind a thin collar and no lacing on the glass.

S - Thick caramel and brown sugar up front, buttery, maltose, lightly boozy with the cognac barrel aging coming thru nicely. Quite sweet overall...no hop presence. Has sipper written all over it.

T - Sugary sweet with lots of caramel and toffee flavors up front. Prunes and raisins, hints of grapes. Cognac has a firm presence here with some mild alcohol warmth and its own sweetness playing off of the other malt derived sugars and fruity components. Bitter and woody oak notes come in behind the other flavors and persists towards the finish.

M - Thick, full bodied beer...rather low carbonation level that works about perfectly here...just breathes a bit of life into the beer and allows the aromas to release from the beer. Sticky sweet...leaves a thick coating on the lips after every sip...sugary, burnt sugar lingering coat...nice.

O - Very nice BA barleywine. I think the first beer I've had aged in cognac barrels...worked quite well here. Lots of complexity from a variety of sugars, nice fruity components and the barrel aging was very complementary - not overpowering, just subtle enough to enhance the base beer. Glad to have the opportunity to have this one.

Huge thanks to drabmuh for picking this one up for me at the brewery.

Pours a caramel brown with a pretty significant fluffy white head and moderate lacing. Smells very sweet, fruity and malty with some booze lingering in the background. Flavor is very malty with some brown sugar and dark fruit. It's a bit boozy, but not overly so. Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with pretty nice carbonation. Overall this is a nice tasty barleywine, but I'm not getting a ton of barrel.

Big thanks to starrdogg for opening this one up. Served in a Cigar City snifter.

Pours a medium brown color with a thin off-white head and a few spots of lacing. The nose has some faint barrel character along with some brown sugar and mixed fruits. Flavor continues down this line with some nice fruitiness, caramel, and brown sugar. Light oak and vanilla through the finish, though I agree with starrdogg that there wasn't much barrel character to this one. Medium body with light-ish carbonation. Pretty good.
