Reviewed from notes. Poured from wax-sealed 12 oz. bottle into a Tampa Bay Brewing Company snifter glass.

A: Pours a very deep, dark bronze to brown, quite hazy, with a thin off-white head and fairly low visible carbonation.

S: Sticky sweet malts, burnt caramel, booze and brandy, brown sugar, dark fruit, molasses and toffee. Fairly sweet but not cloying.

T: Sweet and sticky malts, molasses and brown sugar, and the restrained bourbon and cognac that adds to the flavors but doesn't dominate. Some ethanol sweetness, sticky toffee, rum raisins, and a touch of roasted malt bitterness adds a contrast near the finish.

M: Alcohol presence noticeable, but despite the barrels it doesn't seem "hot". Low carbonation sensation. Full-bodied, but not like stouts from Cigar City.

O: This was really quite good, though with the sweetness level I don't think I'd ever want more than 12 ounces at once - so they picked a good sized bottle to package the beer in. As the beer warms during the drink, it does open up and improve for sure - don't be in a hurry with this one.

Batch 5 poured into snifter.

Pours a dark brown with small fizzy tan head that disappears just as quickly as it forms.

Aroma on this is huge dark dried fruit. Old fig, date, caramelized raisin, oak, brown sugar, blackstrap molasses, horse saddle, and a spirit character leaning towards whiskey but with a rum and port like presence as well.

The palate shows a complexity similar to that of barrel aged Old Ales. More of that brown sugar, tobacco, molasses, fig jam, raisin, earthy leather, and prune come out. Plenty of barrel character as well with oak tannins, Brandy, and Rum. I believe part of the blend did use bourbon barrels but the taste doesn't really express it.

Mouthfeel is a bit lighter than I think it should be but good nonetheless. It's expected with some barrel aged beers.

Overall, I'm very impressed by this. Very much a la FW Anniversary style with the blending and it results in a tasty concoction. Blurs the line between Old Ale, Barleywine, and American Strong. Wish they produced these on a large scale!
