A- Pours a very thick and dark brown. Settles into the glass as a black looking liquid with no head to speak of. Poured almost syrupy, so even with a vigorous pour there was no head.

S- Sweet sugary vanilla, caramel, hints of dark fruits and cinnamon, the brandy comes through as a sugary candy aroma. Very nice and not overpowering.

T- A big, rich stout with tons of roasted malts giving way to some cinnamon and vanilla, with lots of sugary sweetness. Lots of sweet liquor-like flavors in the middle, with the sweetness giving way to a hint of spicy pepper and cinnamon on the finish. Lots of interesting flavors come out and share the spotlight.

M- Thick, rich, syrupy, huge mouthfeel, one of the fullest stouts I have ever had. Carbonation is at a low level, which works nicely with the body.

O- This is a great beer that showcases lots of complex flavors, good use of a barrel and a great mouthfeel. Well worth seeking out.

Thanks Sonny for the great brews you always send me. It was only appropriate to open this at Stoutfest III, CHEERS!

A- Poured to seven glasses with a superbly thick, pitch black motor oily body. A dark mocha brown head forms to about a finger with pretty good retention. Falls to a foamy, frothy ring after a few moments and lacing is spotty.

S- Holy brandy batman! Instantly recognize the barrels in comparison to the regular Hunahpu's. The brandy brings on a barrage of dark fruits and apples, like woah. The brandy doesn't overshadow but really puts one of the biggest stout bases to rest. Dark fudge truffle chocolate and intense roast malts beneath the fruit.

T- Follows the nose with the brandy aspect in a nice way. I've had a decent amount of brandy in my time but this one seems to blend in quite well with the Hunahpu's base. Bright dark fruits and apples swirl into the fudgey, dark cocoa and milk chocolate base malts. Lingering aftertaste of pure truffle madness, I would think I just ate a big fruit truffle. Man, brandy really shines, did I mention that? Slight pepper spiciness after many sips and some cinnamon with warmth.

MF- Massively thick, what I remember from both Hunahpu's and Zhukov (duh). Oily beast coats the palate with a nice moderate carbonation that really allows the fruit to shine on the palate. No alcohol heat for me, hidden almost insanely so.

The first really put me aback but it grew on me with warmth and time. I really enjoy the bright brandy character we got in this bottle (I have heard it varies quite a bit) as it turns it all into a dessert truffle more than a beer. Tons of melted chocolate and brandy deliciousness.

Drunk along side a regular Huna

APPEARANCE: A thick, dense, black pour produces a two finger, tight, dark mocha colored head after a wonderful cascading effect that looks stunning. Head retains really well and slowly fades to a good full cap. Jet black body and minimal carbonation evident. A fuller wisp and ring remain, showing some beautiful swirl patters after each sip, and leaves some falling dots of lace down the glass. Looks wonderful, just as the regular version does.

SMELL: Roasted malts, molasses, cacao powder, some vanilla and chilies for sure. A touch of brandy barrel, but not much really. The base beer is still the main actor here.

TASTE: A touch of brandy barrel up front, but then lots of base beer through the middle into the swallow. Roasted malts, molasses again, cacao, with cinnamon, vanilla and chilies linger over a roasted, chocolaty base. Some brandy barrel and alcohol provides a solid backdrop as well, but it is rather in the background. Solid beer, as the base stout is world class, but as a barrel aged beer, it could use a touch more in that department.

PALATE: Medium-full body, oily, with medium carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down fine with a slightly oily and mouth-coating finish. Fantastic feel for the style, and just as menacing as the base beer.

OVERALL: This is another example that to be a world class beer, no matter the adjuncts or barrel aging, the base beer has to be world class in itself. You could probably do absolutely anything to Marshal Zhukov and it would turn out a winner. Hunahpu's stout is probably the best adjunct stout out there, and barrel aging it works so well. I will admit that I find the base Huna a better adjunct stout than this BA version is a barrel aged stout, but no matter. Enjoyed the heck out of this and would jump at the opportunity to drink it again. Thanks again jbeatty. Highly, highly recommended.

Big thanks to Tommy for again hitting another big want of mine. Brandy Hunahpu's pours inky, oily, and black, as it sits like used up 5w-20 sitting still inside of my glass. Swirling the glass reveals the highly viscous body of the beer. There's absolutely no head, and the few bubbles that reach the surface quickly scatter to the edge of the glass to form the thinnest tan collar I've ever seen.

I have to go back about five or six times before I can even begin to pick out specifics in the aroma. Just so many things going on at once, it's difficult to wrap your senses around it. Plentiful baker's chocolate, roasted malts, sweet and smooth brandy warmth, cinnamon sticks, and a touch of back end chile. On paper, it looks overwhelming, but everything meshes together so incredibly well.

Minutes later, I still haven't even taken a sip yet, but I sit there, pretty content with just admiring the aroma. The copious amounts of sweet cocoa, the lovely vanilla finish, the perfect addition of cinnamon spice, the smooth integration of warm brandy and wood, and the unobtrusive nature of the chile peppers. The harmonious complexity is really a masterpiece.

I finally take a sip, and I'm not surprised to find it loaded with tons of sweet baker's chocolate and waves of roasted malts. I even pick up an initial hint of coffee beans - perhaps ol' Zhukov is gently peaking his head through all of the bustle? Vanilla is heavier in the flavor, as is the cinnamon, but they are both very welcomed amplifications, and they're treating my palate right.

Brandy is laden throughout the beer, but never dominates or obstructs the other mirage of flavors taking place. Warm brandy, even a touch sweet, with lots of oak in the finish. The chiles are mild all the way through, and only tickle the back of my tongue every so often. Though I like the fact they're not burning my senses silly, I wouldn't mind it if they were just a *little* more potent. It seems the barrel aging has swallowed them up.

Cigar City has a knack for big, thick, oily, viscous mouth feels, and California Brady Hunahpu's is certainly no exception to that rule. It feels like 2% chocolate milk, so rich and thick, each sip just exploding with flavor. Carbonation was understandably low, but it didn't harm the mouth feel any. Really, this was such a wonderful, enjoyable, and unique stout, and I'm really glad I finally had the chance to try it.

Pours like darkness, very little head. Prominent Cinnamon, but no heat from spices. Chocolate. Did I mention cinnamon? Reminiscent of my unicorn Abraxas, but I feel Abraxas finishes better. A little thin, but definitely not thin at all. Almost feel bad for guzzling mine, but at least I smacked my lips a lot to get the full flavor across my palate. I've been waiting to try Hunahpu for quite some time since I had the revelation that I love my chili stouts. This did not disappoint. A great whale to share.

The brandy blends well with a heightened chocolate flavor as I get the boozy distilled liquor surrounded by a chocolate candy sweetness. Nice dose of cinnamon and a bit of coffee. The chili's are muted by the booziness of the brandy.

Review from a bottle generously shared at last Borefts. I originately wanted to try it side by side with my bottle of Laird's Apple Brandy Huna and missed the opportunity. Whatever, I guess I'll have others!
Pours dark, opaque, very thick.
The barrel ageing is obvious from the nose with more booze than the regular huna, some brandy and white fruits on top of the roasted malt and chocolate. Peppery finish.
The taste is less focused on the balance between chocolate and chili than the regular version, the chocolate isn't actually the dominant flavor, being mellowed in roasted malt and some coffee flavor. The complexity comes from the barrel treatment with some noticeable booze, hints of pear and apple and a vanilla sweetness. Finishes with spicies and chilies with a moderately hot aftertaste.
Thick and heavy mouthfeel, not sticky, but a bit too hot considering booze and chili.
The barrel ageing changes the base beer quite a lot, it brings more complexity but withdraw some of the delightful fudge and chili chocolate from the base beer. I'm now curious to see the effect of other barrel ageing on Huna.

This was another big on my wants list, thanks to HanksBeard (reddit), shared at the CCB bottle share night.

pitch black color, stains the glass, long legs, no real head,

Nose awesome dark malt stout, choc, cocoa nibs, very mild chili note, big dark choc, vanilla, coffee, little nutty and roast, little brandy like fruity barrel note.

Taste is phenomenal, dark creamy melting choc, cocoa, buttery coconut oak, fruity brandy notes and little vanilla barrel, little earthy hop, mild peppery spicy note, so much melting cocoa, etc. Finish is more vanilla, barrel, long spicy pepper but not overpowering, little vanilla barrel note, mild fruity.

Mouth is fuller bod, creamy lush, thick, decent carb, mild warming booze and mild pepper.

Overall great, very good but just wish the brandy came through a bit more, it's hard to get through the huge awesome base beer.

On tap at the 2013 Firestone Walker Invitational held at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon, brandy, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with vanilla and cinnamon flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate and an alcohol kick with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with some awesome aromas and flavors.

The pour is black, modicum of carbonation. It smells like Heidi Klum’s nakedness (with all due respect to Heidi, she’s just bloody gorgeous). Brandy, that Cigar City patented roast, but the Huna seems to be subsumed in the barrel. Still. Yeah.

Hunahpu’s – Brandy Barrel Aged girad gdagag gnbad. Huna on brandy. Could I get this on tap? In my house? Perhaps coming out of the master bathroom faucet? I could brush my teeth with it, that would be cool. The taste of Huna comes on strong, cinnamon, chocolate, white pepper, warm chile, sharp & hard roasts. The brandy comes into the middle & begins to sand off the harsh Huna edges; the brandy is subtle, woody. Yes, I could drink more of this. But I shouldn’t. Because I hate crawling up the stairs.

Yes, I like this, & I’m beginning to lose my power to type, so excellent beer. Begat.

750ml bottle with the yellow wax at a bottle share. Poured into a BCBS snifter 7/13/2013.

This beer is really something. The nose reminds me of an even sweeter Hunahpu- lots of dark chocolate sweetness complemented by a subtle sweet syrupy brandy flavour. When it warms up a bit, you can get some of the chili, but I never really get much cinammon or vanilla here.

A typical dark black imperial stout that is pretty much viscous motor oil, very opaque. Thin brown head that dissipates quickly. The beer ends up looking very placid. A little bit of lacing here and there, nothing sticks.

As I drink this beer, my first thought is that it is very sweet. Chocolatey with a good bit of brandy flavour that is more detectable than in the nose. Some chili comes up, and I convinced myself I had a little vanilla as well. Not a whole lot of cinammon. Altogether it is a complex, delicious, decadent combination. Double chocolate cake with brandy frosting and chili sprinkled on top.

Thick as hell. Full bodied beer that is viscous and smooth. The aftertaste is mostly the chocolate and chili which is much like the regular Hunahpu. Very smooth but not too dry, not a ton of heat either.

Overall this is a slight improvement on the original Hunahpu. If you aren't able to get this on the cheap, the regular Hunahpu still gives you everything you could ever want and more. This beer held up great against an all-star lineup of BCS variants and VBDL so that should tell you something about how solid this one is, at the very least.

Obvious that time is starting to take its toll on this. I never had this fresh, only with age, but have had regular Huna and DB Huna both fresh, and just going off that the flavors here have blended together so nothing really stands out in its own. Still really good but don't go out of your way for it.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice oily black with a thin mocha halo.

S - Aromas of coconut, cinnamon, vanilla, brandy, delicious.

T - Taste is just like the nose, coconut, cinnamon, vanilla, brandy, chocolate, light malts and smoke. Super tasty, really drinkable.

M - Mouthfeel is smooth, nice drinking, alcohol hidden well.

O - Overall this beer was much better than ba abraxas. Delicious.

A - Looks like Hunahpu's, with that distinguishing glass-coating film to it. Tan foam settles to a thin collar, wisps, and specks of lace. Black body, although it doesn't seem quite as oily as previous variants.

S - Loads of brandy here, with a sweet and vinous quality pervading; almost cognac-esque. The barrel and spirit flavors are supported by the expected cocoa, with noticeable traces of cinnamon and chile surviving the the aging process. Well-hidden booze and excellent integration of flavors.

T - The taste isn't quite as excellent as the aroma, but it's still solid enough. There's a bit more char, biscuit, and perhaps a hint of dark fruit oxidation amid the cinnamon, molasses, and dark chocolate flavors. Less overt oak and spirit, and more nebulous sweetness. Finish reveals a bit of Zhukov's scorched earth and tar bitterness.

D - Dry, tannic, and roasty. Full bodied, with lower carbonation, and some mild chile heat and spice that lingers.

D - This is quite different from the Apple Brandy version and seems less barrel-forward than the other variants that have been released. Enjoyable on the whole, although I wish the taste had been as compelling as the aroma. Lives up to the hype for the most part though.

750ml bottle poured into HF sherry glass. Thanks JD for brining this to our tasting, consumed right after Mexican Cake.

A- Pours a pitch black, decent carbonation, slight mocha brown head that dissipates to a flat top with just a slight brown ring around the glass.

S- Aromas of brandy, oak, dark chocolate, hint of coffee and vanilla, some light peppers hiding in the background. Incredibly well balanced, pleasant smelling, nice barrel presence.

T- Creamy chocolate, light well balanced peppers/spices, a hint of vanilla and slight coffee, subtle brandy that lends a nice sweetness, slight oak, finishes with more creamy chocolate, brandy, and subtle spices.

M- Medium bodied, goes down very easy, nice light carbonation perfect for a stout.

O- This was a fantastic barrel-aged stout that retains all the great flavors of the base beer but adds a nice well balanced complexity. I definitely recommend checking this out.

2013 vintage. Tulip glass.

A: Pours a viscous, motor oil black with a thin film of foamy, dark brown head. A few dots of lacing and average retention.

S: A wonderful mix of cinnamon, brandy (which imparts some bright red fruit), roast, vanilla bean and oak. Loads of delicious spice are the dominant aromas here.

T: Red fruit and brandy, some vanilla, with a bit of sweet red pepper spice, coffee/roast, and mouthwatering dark cocoa at the end. Slight residual sweetness. The brandy and stout flavors don’t *quite* meld together as well as they could, though that’s not surprising for a wine-barrel stout. Just a touch of alcohol is evident.

M: Velvety medium body and light carbonation.

O: Great stuff, an improvement over regular Huna. Highly drinkable given that this is a bigger BA stout. Flavors don’t meld together as well as they probably could, but excellent nonetheless.

750ml yellow waxed bottle poured into a matching CCB Hunahpu snifter. The brew appears black in color with a dark brown head that fades leaving patchy lace.

This smells roasty with coffee, somewhat nutty and with a mild vinous barrel sweetness blending to vanilla, oak, coconut and earth with a bit of solvent feel with deeper whiffs.

This tastes faintly vinous with dark fruitiness then coffee, milk chocolate and cinnamon bark. The dark fruitiness comes across like plum/raison/dates and has a contrasting mild spicy warmth. Some coffee/espresso bitterness, char and mild neutral oak. There is seemingly slightly more of a raw pepper flavor to this iteration than the others ive tried. Black licorice is noted in the aftertaste.

This is fullbodied and moderate to lightly carbonated. An awesome, enjoyable sipper that id certainly seek out again.

Reviewing the California Brandy Barrel Aged Hunahpu's Imperial Stout from Cigar City Brewing out of Tampa, Florida.

Score: 93

2013 vintage bottle served in a Hunahpu's Day 2014 taster glass and enjoyed on 03/25/14.

Appearance: Pours that typical black bodied Hunahpu's color with a thin layer of espresso colored head that settles to a ring around the glass. Okay lacing, average retention -- less so than the Double Barrel Hunahpu's. Solid oily legs. 4/5

Smell: Brandy, chocolate and light peppers. Fresher (six-plus months ago), in some bottles of this beer we sampled, the pepper and spiced characters were more robust on the nose. Alas, at least in this bottle, with just under a year of age on it, the spiciness and spiced qualities are very muted on the nose. A little bit of cinnamon and some tobacco beyond the brandy/chocolate, oak too. 4/5

Taste: The spiciness factor is substantially greater on the palate than it was in the nose -- especially side-by-side with the Double Barrel Hunahpu's. Pepper spiciness, milk chocolate, vanilla and a hint of roast on the palate. A bit of dark fruit character towards the back half too. A kiss of cinnamon, which is not nearly as pronounced as it was in the 2013 vintage Hunahpu's or the Double Barrel Hunahpu's. The spiciness of the brew last throughout the taste and lingers a bit past the swallow (along with the milk chocolate flavor) with a nice tingle sensation from the pepper heat on the front-center of the tongue. There is a very mild underlying sweetness present. The brandy aging is quite muted relative to the nose. Everything here mixes nicely. 4.5/5

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, spot on carbonation. Has a good balance with a slight sweetness. Slightly salivating mouthfeel, with a little bit of pepper liveliness. 4.75/5

Overall: A really nice barrel aged treatment of Hunahpu's that is put to shame by Double Barrel Hunahpu's side-by-side, though the comparison is not entirely fair since the California Brandy version is nearly a year aged at this point. I think this beer was better fresher, but it has held up well. There have been numerous reports of bottle variation with this beer, but the last three I have consumed had a nice degree of spiciness -- even with nearly a year of age. Although this brew is less complex and appetizingly flavorful than the Double Barrel Hunahpu's (in fairness, so many beers are), it is nonetheless pretty delicious in its own right. It is just not as tasty as what it takes to land one at this point.

Cost: $25 for a 750 ml bottle.

Bottle I shared during our ugly sweater christmas party tasting.

A - Pours jet black with a nice one finger tall tan head, quickly dissipating down to a light film that dissolves into stillness after about five minutes. Leaves little to no lace on the glass.

S - Smells of warm chocolate, strong brandy, cinnamon, light chili heat, vanilla and oak. This is probably the best part of this beer as all the intended aromas are present and accounted for.

T - Starts off with a quick burst of sweetness, mainly vanilla and chocolate, quickly giving way to a combo of charred dark malt and strong brandy barrel. There is only a hint of the chilies and cinnamon from the nose. Finish has some char and light dryness, lingering for quite awhile. Good but missing some of the key parts.

M - Heavy body with moderate carbonation. Big, roasty feel with only a mild chili burn, wish it had more. Booze is again well hidden, only really coming forward at room temperature.

O - An enjoyable rift on the regular Hunahpu's. I just wish a bit more of the base beer came through, not sure if that is from the age or just how it is. I would never turn this down again but it just isn't as good as the apple brandy was.

Pours black as night, inky, opaque, with a fingers of super dark brown frothy head. The aroma has plenty wood notes, brandy, heat from the peppers, and loss of sticky chocolate. Tastes of chocolate, mild pepper heat, very faint cinnamon (which is fine cuz Im not a cinnamon fan lol), light boozy woody notes. Full bodied, not quite as thick feeling as it looks, but still chewy nonetheless. Drinks well, alcohol isn't too potent on the taste.

There's so much chocolate and pepper that the brandy barrel isn't as potent as you'd think, but its still quite a stellar imperial stout!

Poured from the bottle into a Wine tasting snifter. Tasted side by side after regular Huna same vintage 2013.

Motor oil black off the pour, carbon copy of regular Huna. Dark walnut black, fleeting mocha dark head and small collar. Impressive and aggressive.

Berry fruit forward on first whiff. Hints at raspberry with lingering classic dark bitter chocolate. Dominant, taking over any sense of any hints of oak, vanilla, or even chili pepper sensations compared to regular Huna. Doesn't smell like a brandy.

First sip brings the berry fruit action, but an interesting tangy sour note slightly which is playful. Large bodied and full. Classic dark bitter chocolate angle, but a nice berry fruit forward somewhere between dark berries and raspberry. Roast character slightly complimenting, but no chili heat or sense that peppers were added.

It's a very well crafted brew, but I am not feeling the strong specialty that the brandy barrel brought to this otherwise great beer. No complaints though, very tasty.

750ml poured into Hunahpu snifter. Huge thanks to dachshunddude86 for the bottle.

A - Pours a very deep, murky black. Minimal dark brown head rises as it settles. Looks as though you're staring into the abyss... and I'm not talking about the beer.

S - I don't find this aspect overly pleasant like some others do. Smells of roasted malts, burnt dark chocolate, and cinnamon. A bit like an over-cooked mexican chocolate cake. I am surprised at the lack of barrel smell. Where's the vanilla?

T - Much better then the smell. Starts off with rich chocolate dominating. Followed up by a menagerie of different flavors. Cinnamon, roast, a hint of sweet vanilla and charred pepper, and oak. Not much of the brandy to be found though. Still, this is one of the most complex beers I've ever had.

M - Thick and viscous. Coats every pore in your mouth and begs you to go slow with this. The glass retains a brown hue after swirling. This beer begs you to share it with 2-4 people. The flavors hang around for a good 5-10 minutes after each sip. I'm doming it though, so to press on I'm sipping a glass of water with it. For 12.5%, the alcohol is no where to be found, and I mean NO WHERE.

O - I'm really glad I got to try this. I'm also looking forward to seeing what CCB does with this beer in the future. I would like to try one though that has a strong barrel presence, but perhaps that wasn't the point with this beer. The bit of oak plays well with the base Hunahpu and is just an explosion of taste. Well done, CCB.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Viscous black. Dark mocha head. Medium collar and a few islands.

Smell - Tons of brandy. Peppers and chocolate. Dark chocolate and a green aroma from the peppers.

Taste - Rich chocolate. Brandy is less distinct than the nose, but still present. More chocolate. Peppers and some other spices.

Mouthfeel - Very thick. Medium carbonation.

Overall - I'm still not convinced that barrels improve on Hunahpu at all.

I would honestly rather have a reg Huna

A- motor oil, very little carbonation, no lacing.

S- Muted form of Huna. I get some chocolate. The vanilla aroma has been torn off from this Brandy aging. Smells pretty good, but not reg Huna good.

T- Muted Huna again. Very little vanilla, not sure how much good the brandy aging did. I had a friend who is Catador who told me to not bother with trying to get this bottle, and he was right. I would rather have traded this for two Hunas.

M- No carbonation, the mouthfeel is actually made way thinner from the barrel aging.

O- I see a lot of people trying to trade for this bottle. I don't see why.
