Style: Quadrupel (Quad)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 15.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Forgotten Island is aged in Appleton rum barrels, originating from Jamaica. This distillery makes the oldest barrel-aged rum in the world. The barrel lends notes of vanilla, molasses, orange peel, cocoa, brown sugar, nutmeg, hazelnut, apricot and peach. This plethora of flavors and aromas from the rum barrels intermingles with banana, clove, cinnamon, fig, plum and brown sugar aromatics and flavors from the quadrupel, creating a crescendo of elegance in a long flavorful finale.

Bottle pour at Woodshop 8 held at The Hermosillo in Los Angeles, CA.

Thanks to John11486 for sharing this one.

Pours a clear reddish-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, fruit, rum, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel and rum flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of woody bitterness and an alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but it borders on being cloyingly sweet in the taste.

Appearance: Not much of a head forms on the dark purple/brown liquid though at 15% I am not surprised; just doesn't have a particularly Belgian appearance

Smell: Brown sugar and dark fruit (dates, primarily, though some black cherry as well); the rum is quite distinct on the aroma)

Taste: Very malty, up front, with the brown sugar, dates and dark cherries paving the way for the spice cake elements to add complexity; by mid-palate, the rum arrives with a wallop, adding boozy sweetness

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low to moderate carbonation; plenty of warmth in the gullet

Overall: Cigar City has done a nice job with the flavors and the barrel aging though the mouthfeel is a bit heavy for the style

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep reddish brown. Small khaki head. Gone quickly.

Smell - Lots of rum. Vanilla and oak come through. Dark fruits. Booze and brown sugar.

Taste - Huge rum characteristic. Fruity. Very sweet. Brown sugar and caramel. Finishes with a rum barrel alcohol burn.

Mouthfeel - Heavy, boozy, very sweet. Medium low carbonation.

Overall - Well this is huge and boozy, but tasty. Bruery-esque. The barrel is nice, but I bet this quad wouldn't taste anywhere as good without the barrel.
