Serving Type: On-tap at Breakwater Brewery poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Amber in color with a nice white head and lots of lacing. Very nice.

Smell: Dominated by grapefruit with other citrus and fruity aromas in the background. Nice hint of pale malt as well. If I had to guess, I'm thinking lots of Citra hops went into this brew.

Taste: As with the smell, this beer is definitely dominated by grapefruit flavor with a nice taste of pine as well. Good malt flavor as a backbone for the hops. Just the right amount of bitterness for an IPA. This is not the most complex flavor profile but it absolutely delicious.

Mouthfeel: Medium body. Semi-sweet. Highly carbonated. Very nice.

Overall: My go to beer at Breakwater and one of the better IPA's that I have had.

Hazy golden orange and auburn. Thin white head with lots of lacing left down the glass.

A tropical fruit aroma consisting of mild grapefruit and orange. Initially, because the beer was served so incredibly cold, there was not much aroma to speak of, but as it warmed, the hops began to shine through and were quite pleasant.

Moderately bitter with citrus notes throughout. Simple, classic, and hoppy. A good, standard San Diego/West Coast IPA.

Medium bodied with ample carbonation.

So far, my favorite of Breakwater's offerings. This is a very solid IPA.

The Gold Medal winner in the ipa category at this year's SDIBF. Why am I the first to review this?

Great auburn appearance, darker than typical for the style. Lacing was moderate. Aroma and taste can be summed up in one word: Mangopalooza. So much tropical fruit feel on top of the gobs of dry hopping. Was very reiminiscient of Port's Mango dipa in taste and aroma (although very different in appearance). It wasn't just tropical citrus though, there was an ambient pine backdrop. Never heavy on the palate despite the caramel color and taste that was there.

Had never heard of these guys, but it was easy to see how it won. I think I had a half dozen samples of this stuff once I tried everything that was new and interesting to me.

One of my very favorite IPAs out there - fantastic aroma, and overall the best offering at Breakwater, which is one of my favorite places. I always am tempted to try something new, but I'm compelled to order DMJ every time, and I'm always happy about it, and happy with the beer.

I don't get this kind of aroma and taste out of 99% of the other IPAs I've tried.

100% recommend to any IPA fans out there ...

Comes across darker than average for style, this one starts to bring some brown to the table. 1/2" off white head. Aroma dropped heavy tropical fruit notes, guava and mango.

This is one of the first ipas to really drop that heavy. It still clung to the notion that you needed to have a heavy caramel bready kind of malt backbone though, this was a thick, syrupy kind of vibe.. That did round out with some pine/wood notes at least though. When the mango pops its hard to deny.

On-tap at Stone

A: The beer pours a hazed golden amber color with a finger of white head and some mild lacing.

S: Initially, this beer smells great. Lots of grapefruit, tangerine, and pine. However, as I let the glass sit, there was a ton of butter aroma that came through. The hops were still there, but the butter was just too much to get past.

T: The bitterness is certainly there, but not quite the punch of hop flavor I was looking for. A decent pine flavor and some grass to go with the bread and malt. I experienced the same butter character on the palate, as well.

M: Medium in body with a moderate level of carbonation.

D: This one really lead me on but ended up being a disappointment.

Awesome IPA. Wish that I could get this in bottles. But they do sale growlers. This beer is what San Diego IPA's are about.

worst ipa I've ever had. you can tell they have no idea what they are doing. hardly any head low carbonation no hoppy
flavor and cloudy. very stale taste to this beer. seems
like they missed steps when brewing this thing. I've tried this beer on three separate occasions hoping that maybe it was just a bad batch or something but no every time it has been the same garbage. I doubt I will ever try any of their beers again.
