This place is tiny, but phenomenal. I've visited twice now and will be back. Expect to wait for a table, but their beer list is going to be good. Only 4 beers on tap, but there will be plenty of variety in cans and bottles to choose from. You need the smothered fries and the burnt ends when it comes to appetizers. Get the brisket point burger with bacon (I've had many fantastic burgers, but this might be my favorite) and the jalapeno creamed corn as a side (not hot, but plenty of flavor). The waitresses in both of my visits were attentive.

While visiting St. Louis on a business trip, I hosted a dinner for myself and a few colleagues at The Shaved Duck. They did not take reservations but said they could accommodate a large group, even though the place is relatively small. We only waited 30-40 minutes for our table, which was plenty of time to grab a beer from their quality tap and bottle selection.

The place is located in a soon-to-be gentrified section of south St. Louis and is really just a corner establishment sitting in the middle of a residential neighborhood. You enter into a small but beautiful bar area. There is a short wooden bar with about 3 or 4 high bar tables. The restaurant sits behind the bar and probably holds a dozen small tables that can be moved to accommodate even fairly large groups.

They have four taps, which were all local when I was there, and about a couple dozen bottles, again mostly local. I had a Charleville St. Dorian Abbey Rye while waiting for our table, a Charleville Hoptimistic IPA and a 4 Hands Contact High wheat with my St. Louis ribs, and a Founders Breakfast Stout after dinner. My ribs were top-notch and others around the table raved about their food. When in St. Louis, eat St. Louis ribs; with that said, I really wanted many things on the menu --- especially the chilis and the bratwurst burger.

While the selection was not large (only 4 taps), I was super pleased to have such a large selection of bottle options of local beers. Living in Seattle, I don't have access to most of these. For me, on this one night, there was more than enough selection.

The bar staff were welcoming, quick and helpful in suggestions (especially for those in my group who were interested in their options but not as knowledgeable as a BA). For a table of 13, we had two wait-staff assigned to us and they were great. Took our orders promptly, were immediately at our side as we emptied our glasses asking if we wanted another beer or another glass of wine, and delivered our food without errors. They checked in on us without being pesky. Truly professional staff.

I will definitely return upon my next visit to St. Louis.

The Shaved Duck is a small, cozy modern barbecue restaurant in Tower Grove East. There are four taps, and a few dozen bottles. The selection focuses primarily on the local and regional stuff, like Schlafly, Boulevard, Crown Valley, Six Row, and so forth, with some other American craft options. The food is excellent, a modern spin on barbecue. The service is good, but the place is always crowded, so expect to wait a while. The bar area and seating area are both cozy and low-lit. Just a really cool place, and a great place to get a great meal while drinking good local craft beer.
