Appearance: golden pilsner-like color, thick lustrous white head that flattens out slowly, lots of rising bubbles
Aroma: lucious floral hoppiness and a sweet malt note, a touch of grain, pear-like fruitiness, vaguely reminiscent of a Duvel, a touch of spice, a bit earthy, BUT where's the pumpkin?
Flavor: a subtle malt sweetness is balanced by a respectable hop bitterness; also a bit of Belgian hop flavor and fruitiness; a distant odd characteristic could potentially be pumpkin-related but I can't be sure; a slight peppery essence comes in just before the finish
Mouthfeel: light bodied and nicely carbonated
Overall Impression: Not sure what the deal is with this beer. The label on the front (looking rather worn and old) denotes that it is a "Halloween Pumpkin Ale" of 6.2% abv, brewed by Brouwerij Villers which I know to be closed. There are some jack-o-lanterns, a witch, and a black cat on the label. However, the back label is from Brouwerij Huyghe (of Delirium Tremens fame) and says that it is a 5.5% beer. It looks like it was destined for distribution in Canada as it says "Quebec 5 cent refund". The notes on the back label give it a best by date of 10/2004. So, what gives?
The pumpkin aspect is almost impossible to find, if it's there at all. I was torn between panning the beer for its lack of pumpkin-ness or rating it based on the reasonably nice flavor and aroma. I ended up doing a bit of both.
