BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Half Acre Beer Company
Illinois, United States | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly Heyoka IPA and GoneAway IPA

GoneAway is a western charged firecracker. We conjured the classics and then laid them on a bed of pale malt. This India Pale Ale shoots straight to the bitter edge before falling into a mellow haze. Deep gold and ready to travel into the distance.

16 oz can without freshness date poured into a Speigelau Tulip

Pours a clear orange-amber color with a white head of good retention and lacing, very pretty.

Smell is of fresh floral hops, similar to the hop profile found in daisy cutter, piney and resinous, not terribly aromatic though

Taste is of floral hops and is lightly bitter. Very dry, almost no sweetness to this.

Mouthfeel is light, dry, crisp, clean, no stickiness, moderate carbonation.

Overall I had hoped to enjoy this more. Half Acre makes some awesome IPAs but this one falls short of their high standards.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #87 (Apr 2014):

Grapefruit, Piquant

Semi-brutal hop bitterness is what we get as we are knocking this one back, it slowly subsides to more of a grassy grapefruity flavors that lingers. Stellar use of hops. An amazing American IPA and as robust as the hopping is it still ends up being pretty damn approachable.

Tall Boy can poured into an imperial pint glass. The beer is a hazy apricot with thick beige head. It leaves nice lacing on the glass.

I could smell the beer from a foot away. Lots of citrus, pine and something fruity. Its inviting.

The taste leads with some citrus based bitterness. It has some semisweet malts, slight hints of tropical fruit, and then some pine resin. Lots going on here.

The mouth is nice. It's a touch oily and coating but has enough active carbonation to then cleanse your tongue.

This is a nice IPA. It makes me wish I had picked up more than a 4 pack. Another winner from Half Acre!

16oz can. Served in a stemmed glass 12/22/2014.

A- Hazy, but not cloudy, copper-coloured body, two finger white head with nice retention and good longevity. Thick large bubbles make up the collar and a moderately sized film on the surface of the beer. Small islands of lacing.

S- As soon as the can got popped, I got strong citrus flavours. Not grapefruit, but more along the lines of tangerines. Also some oranges and pine. It's fairly impressive. Backed up by a moderately sweet pale malt- not grainy, but rather more of a honey biscuit sweetness.

F- Moderately strong citrus flavours, more of tangerines and orange zest, a bit of tropical fruits, backed up by honey, biscuits of the malt backbone. Mild-moderate citrus bitterness follows through, not particularly bitter.

M- Medium bodied, well-carbonated, nice slight fizziness to it. Slick initially with a moderately drying finish with traces of oranges.

O- A very solid, tasty IPA. Nice orange-forward flavours that gets away from the usual grapefruit+pine combination that's so popular these days.
