Notes: Formerly Heyoka IPA and Senita IPA

GoneAway is a western charged firecracker. We conjured the classics and then laid them on a bed of pale malt. This India Pale Ale shoots straight to the bitter edge before falling into a mellow haze. Deep gold and ready to travel into the distance.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #87 (Apr 2014):

Grapefruit, Piquant

Semi-brutal hop bitterness is what we get as we are knocking this one back, it slowly subsides to more of a grassy grapefruity flavors that lingers. Stellar use of hops. An amazing American IPA and as robust as the hopping is it still ends up being pretty damn approachable.

Canned 2/24. Today is 3/17.

I live in CA. This beer is described as a west coast IPA. If this beer were available on a regular, I'd aways buy it above a sea full of available west coast IPAs. Dry. Crisp. Clean. Starburst tropical fruit without being sugary and too sweet. Half Acre NAILED this one. Highly recommended.

16oz can poured into a pint glass.

A: Sunny yellow color with a decent haze. Bone white head retains at two fingers and leaves ample stickage.

S: Candied lemon peel, orange zest, apricot, white grapefruit, softly herbal and floral. All resting on a solid bready pale malt foundation.

T: Hops build in the attack. Pithy, oily, green, resinous and bitter. Lots of white grapefruit. Peppery. The shock of it eventually subsides and more playful juicy and fruity notes begin to emerge. Clementine, lemon, apricot, and maybe even a hint of passion fruit. Solid bready malt backbone lets the hops shine but brings things into balance masterfully. Fading grassy bitterness and juicy fruits on an easy and pleasant finish.

M: Full medium body. Round, chewy, and fluffy. Carbination is apparent, fine and firm.

O: Hell of an IPA. Very well put together. It challenges the palate and gives you a lot to chew on, but has a core simplicity to it and achieves an effective balance at the same time. High marks for drinkabikity with an easy finish that has you quaffing back the pint. Why wait in line for beer when you can grab stuff like this off the shelf?

Tall Boy can poured into an imperial pint glass. The beer is a hazy apricot with thick beige head. It leaves nice lacing on the glass.

I could smell the beer from a foot away. Lots of citrus, pine and something fruity. Its inviting.

The taste leads with some citrus based bitterness. It has some semisweet malts, slight hints of tropical fruit, and then some pine resin. Lots going on here.

The mouth is nice. It's a touch oily and coating but has enough active carbonation to then cleanse your tongue.

This is a nice IPA. It makes me wish I had picked up more than a 4 pack. Another winner from Half Acre!

It pours golden amber with a bog and thick head. The aroma is simply amazing with tropical fruits and tons n tons of dank. The taste is a bit mellower than the nose makes you think but still fairly complex yet balanced. Sweet caramel and biscuit followed by citrus and a late yet barely perceptible dank aftertaste. Full bodied and with a creamy mouthfeel. A great beer that is easy to drink.

Looks good. Smells like any basic IPA. Taste is not unique or memorable in any way. Feel is quite thin for being a regular IPA. I really do like quite a few Half Acre IPAs and pale ales, but this one is pretty basic and not one of them.

Packaged (canned) on 12/5/16; consumed on 12/29/16.

A: Poured from the 16 oz can into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. Body is clear golden amber, but more dark yellow when backlit. A good 1.5-finger head of off-white rests on top and retains well, leaving behind rings of foamy lace.

S: Definitely Amarillo hops in the house - cat pee, along with earthy onion and raw garlic.

T: Toasty and bready malt foundation is followed by juicy citrus - grapefruit and oranges primarily. Some apricot or ripe peach as well, and at times I get a tropical fruit presence (think mango). Nice overall balance between hops and malt. Hint of pine or pine needles on the aftertaste.

M: Real nice feel to this one - call it medium in heft, with a modest carbonation and good creamy feel to it.

O: A very, very good IPA. Not in-your-face hop bitterness, just tasty and an easy drinker given the balance and the feel.

16oz can. Served in a stemmed glass 12/22/2014.

A- Hazy, but not cloudy, copper-coloured body, two finger white head with nice retention and good longevity. Thick large bubbles make up the collar and a moderately sized film on the surface of the beer. Small islands of lacing.

S- As soon as the can got popped, I got strong citrus flavours. Not grapefruit, but more along the lines of tangerines. Also some oranges and pine. It's fairly impressive. Backed up by a moderately sweet pale malt- not grainy, but rather more of a honey biscuit sweetness.

F- Moderately strong citrus flavours, more of tangerines and orange zest, a bit of tropical fruits, backed up by honey, biscuits of the malt backbone. Mild-moderate citrus bitterness follows through, not particularly bitter.

M- Medium bodied, well-carbonated, nice slight fizziness to it. Slick initially with a moderately drying finish with traces of oranges.

O- A very solid, tasty IPA. Nice orange-forward flavours that gets away from the usual grapefruit+pine combination that's so popular these days.

Final score: 4.05

Nothing special here. Looks average, smells average, tastes average, and feels average. Taste is like citra hops or something else fruity and faintly sweaty with booziness and pine. Not upset paying for it and drinking, but will not buy again.

16 oz. on draft at the brewery, unknown brewing/packaging date, poured into a Half Acre pint glass, drank over 30 minutes

A: 2/3 - golden-straw color, moderate clarity (cannot read or see through), initial frothy eggshell-white head settles into a 1/4 finger glass lacing, moderate alcohol legs

S: 8/12 - mild-to-moderate citrus hop aromas - grapefruit, orange peel and tangerine - with some background pine; moderate simple malt aroma; moderate alcohol; no diacetyl, no DMS

T: 12/20 - on the front of the tongue, there is a moderate hop bitterness; in the middle of the palate, the predominant flavor is certainly grapefruit/citrus and pine; on the back of the palate, there is a moderate malt sweetness and alcohol; finishes dry and inviting

M: 4/5 - moderate body, gentle hop oil coating of the tongue; moderate carbonation

O: 6/10 - average (definitely not mid-90s) IPA at best and further proof that GABF is a popularity-cum-safety contest that doesn't award bold, progressive flabors; need to dial up the flavor/aroma (and dry) hops to really push the hop intensity; probably wouldn't purchase this again

A- bright golden orange with the slightest haze. Off white head that starts nice and fluffy and fades over about ten minutes.

S- nice and fruity, some more grassy and piney lingering notes after a direct waft.

T- definitely the high point here. Super resiny, sticky hop bitterness follows a juicy, citrus front. very solid slightly bready malt to back.

M- lingering stickiness, light boozy warmth. Leaves a crisp fruity aftertaste, like citrus rind.

O- well balanced and very tasty. Solid offering from an excellent chicago brewery. I prefer most of their offerings to revolution. Put this by anicca and daisy cutter.
