GoneAway IPAGoneAway IPA

Brewed by:
Half Acre Beer Company
Illinois, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly Heyoka IPA and Senita IPA

GoneAway is a western charged firecracker. We conjured the classics and then laid them on a bed of pale malt. This India Pale Ale shoots straight to the bitter edge before falling into a mellow haze. Deep gold and ready to travel into the distance.

Heyoka proudly shows off a tarnished gold body with a touch of chill haze. Six or seven pockets of carbonation burst in groups to the surface. A dirty white head with an eggshell finish sits like a crown atop the surface. Lacing sheets the glass after each drink.

The malts are of the pale variety with soft graininess and white toast. Fresh cut grass and big bitter grapefruit pith lead the way but are soon joined by faint tropical fruits and mouthwatering florals Pine pops and the malt profile becomes more doughy than toasty with warming. The hop profile has some nice depth.

Citrus is big on the palate with a mix of both grapefruit and orange. Fresh cut grass, pine, florals and candied citrus round out the hop profile. A little sugary sweetness adds to the citrus depth for a candy-like quality and the malt is doughy. This is an exceptionally juicy IPA.

A soft body that's moderate in weight is met by a snappy carbonation that tingles the tongue. Bitterness grows with each drink but stays fairly low on the spectrum overall. The finish is semi-dry and the drinkability is off the charts.

Heyoka is yet another good beer in a long line of good beers from the folks at Half Acre. The hop profile shows a ton of depth while the malt profile is pale enough to let the hops showcase. Drinkability is high with a low(er) level of bitterness and juicy hoppiness. It's nice to see a canned IPA in Half Acre's lineup.

16 oz can without freshness date poured into a Speigelau Tulip

Pours a clear orange-amber color with a white head of good retention and lacing, very pretty.

Smell is of fresh floral hops, similar to the hop profile found in daisy cutter, piney and resinous, not terribly aromatic though

Taste is of floral hops and is lightly bitter. Very dry, almost no sweetness to this.

Mouthfeel is light, dry, crisp, clean, no stickiness, moderate carbonation.

Overall I had hoped to enjoy this more. Half Acre makes some awesome IPAs but this one falls short of their high standards.

A- bright golden orange with the slightest haze. Off white head that starts nice and fluffy and fades over about ten minutes.

S- nice and fruity, some more grassy and piney lingering notes after a direct waft.

T- definitely the high point here. Super resiny, sticky hop bitterness follows a juicy, citrus front. very solid slightly bready malt to back.

M- lingering stickiness, light boozy warmth. Leaves a crisp fruity aftertaste, like citrus rind.

O- well balanced and very tasty. Solid offering from an excellent chicago brewery. I prefer most of their offerings to revolution. Put this by anicca and daisy cutter.
