16oz can, 2018 release, poured into a Half Acre "occult" snifter glass.

The beer pours a very dark jet black color, thick and viscous and incredibly opaque with two fingers of khaki head that has very good retention and yields excellent swatches of sticky lacing. The aroma is pleasant, strong barrel character, lots of charred wood, strong roast and hot bourbon, spice and caramel from the bourbon, lots of chocolate to this beer with some vanilla and a soft coffee character, fruity and acidic with a mild richness. The flavors are good, lots of chocolate, soft and layered coffee, it's expressed very well on the palate, light roast with a nice chocolate element that plays well with the base stout and the barrel but this coffee offers a lot of acidity and fruit flavors. The barrel character isn't as intense as the nose but there is still assertive charred oak, hot bourbon, light spice and ample caramel and toffee while a hearty roasted dark grain backbone lingers on the tongue. The mouthfeel is great, thick and creamy heavy body, rich and smooth that coats very well and finishes with a nice warmth.

Verdict: A good barrel aged adjunct stout from Half Acre. The coffee is nicely done in this beer and it's by no means a coffee bomb but still gets a lot out of the coffee character. The issue I have is that for a rich base beer and for an aggressive barrel character, the coffee is quite acidic and introduces a tangy element that I'm not sure the beer needs. That being said, this is still a very enjoyable beer.

2017 vintage. Tan head. Black color.

Great coffee roast followed by warming bourbon and oak. Chocolate and vanilla. Smooth, roasted, and a little fudgy. Could be a tad thicker, but still full bodied.

22 ounce bottle into a snifter. Had 12/30/17.

Pours opaque and near black, with a quickly dissipating half inch head and some filmy lacing. Aromas of coffee, cocoa, lightly roasted malt, bourbon, caramel, raisins, chocolate. The taste offers more bourbon than the nose, coffee, roasted malt, cocoa, oak, some vanilla and caramel. Smooth, creamy, a good but lighter body for the style, well carbonated.

Great flavor and aroma. Very enjoyable. The coffee is prominent, the barrel aging is flavorful but not overwhelming. It’s a touch light bodied, but it’s not a negative. Well worth an annual purchase.

Wow I wasn't a huge fan of regular big hugs but this barrel aged version is amazing!!! So rich and smooth but not too boozy at 12%. Great deep orange foam color, not thin in the mouth at all, and very well-balanced flavors of vanilla, chocolate and coffee!!!

Released 12/3/17; drank 1/30/18 @ the Yarchives.

Black appearance.

A rough pour yielded a small dark tan head; strong, frothy lace.

Dark roast coffee bean, bourbon, oak & cream notes in the nose.

Thick, creamy mouthfeel.

Cream & dark roast coffee flavors up front; chocolate syrup & mild oak notes on the finish.

Mild bourbon notes emerged as this warmed.

Creamy & easy to drink for a 12% stout; not too shabby.

L: Black, not too thick, barely any head, just a little fizz
S: pleasant, mostly coffee/chocolate with a hint of bourbon, but not very strong smelling
T: very nice, again coffee/chocolate and bourbony oak and brown sugar. Not a complex beer, but the flavor it does have is very good. The bourbon is there, but there is no burn.
F: the best part about this beer. It goes down incredibly easy for a big BBA stout. Not very thick, which sometimes can be a flaw, but here I think it just makes it more drinkable.
O: pretty good beer. Not as strong as some BBA stouts, but very pleasant to drink. Tasty and very drinkable. I didn't love regular Big Hugs, so I'm surprised that I liked this one so much. I'll be buying some next year.

1/8/18: 22 Oz Bottle purchased 12/3 on release day, 12% ABV Barrel Aged Big Hugs with Coffee, multiple pours into a 12 oz snifter. Let this sit for 15 minutes before drinking. Pitch black pour, darker brown lacing. Very strong bourbon aroma, chocolate and coffee also in the mix. Bourbon predominate taste, coffee light. Strong beer, nice kick. Very thin texture, somewhat surprising, watery and smooth going down. Overall very good offering.
