Too much guava works against the beer, as it negated all the hops and made it seem like parts of a cactus were floating around in the brew. Not for me, this is a swing and a miss in my book. Lacks any real hop flavor and seems to be a sugary, sweet fruit drink. Not a drain pour, but this was not at all smooth in my book.

I see this beer was brewed by Short's at one time, in collaboration with Half Acre, and then by Half Acre, in collaboration with both Short's and Piece Brewery... This release seems to be Half Acre's revival of the beer, brewed and canned by them, in collaboration with Short's, but without any input from Piece.

As was true of the past renditions, this beer is brewed with guava puree. No canning date that I could find.

I'd seen it around for a week or two (?) but took a pass because it's brewed with guava puree - and while I'm not uptight about it, I've not often been impressed with pale ales featuring pureed fruits - with so much out there, I just grab something else, you know?

Man, this is a beaut! Not a fruit bomb at all - big hop bitterness, lots of pine edge to keep the sugary fruits at bay - and honestly, if I didn't read it on the label, I'd have been oblivious to any guava puree impressions at all - the fruitiness, subdued as it is, came up mostly on the back-end as something vaguely tropical, maybe some banana and strawberry with a hint of lime... Smooth and clean-tasting... The body of the beer is medium gold and clear - not some cloudy NE-style stuff... Modest carbonation, nice shellac on the palate, tight and fresh and clean - a real winner...

Poured 16oz can into snifter. It is a lighter amber orange, clear and has a 2 finger white head. Thick cap remains for the session and the lacing is minimal. Heavy aromas of guava and other citrus hops. This beer has one of the biggest guava and lime flavors on the first sip. It is slightly tart and bitter. The malts are laid back with mild sweet caramel notes. It is a lighter body for a IPA and that is okay. Slightly resinous and sticky. Solid flavored IPA from HA.

I agree with some of the other reviews, the guava somewhat overpowered the typical IPA tastes. That being said it was still pretty drinkable albeit not your traditional IPA.

On draft at Art of Beer in Highwood, IL.

Clear, light amber appearance with medium foam head upon pour. This is a BIG swing and a miss from Half-Acre. The guava completely masks the hops. It doesn't have much of a smell other than faint guava. Taste is very light and artificial. Water feel. Just a total miss in my book and would definitely not only not seek out, but would discourage others from trying.

From someone who considers Half-Acre their favorite Chicago brewery, this was very disappointing.
