22 oz bottle poured into SN tulip.

A- Poured nice and black with a dark crema-colored head. So far, so good.

S- Your standard stout aromas are there: coffee, a little chocolate, roasted malt, slightly bready. I expected more rye character, though. The hops did little for me nose-wise as well.

T- Basically tastes like an odd stout. It is almost as if the rye takes it one direction and the hops are pulling in another. I find myself hoping that the next sip will be better but it just isn't happening.

M- Kinda thin, IMO. There is a nice bit of bite at the end of each sip, though. There just isn't any creaminess or richness to it. It drinks more like a runny porter.

O- "Dry-hopped rye stout?" I said(!) "Sign me up!" I came to this beer with no hyped-up expectations; only curiosity and a love of each individual component that Half Acre brought together in this beer. The flavors just didn't work together for me, unfortunately. Perhaps I'll try it again down the road.

Pours black with a plentiful, bubbly head. Aroma is spicy with rye, estery yeast notes, lightly malty. Tastes estery like Belgian yeast, prickly hops, ashy, full bitterness. Finish has bitter chocolate and cookie. Feels prickly and overcarbonated, body seems light. I seem to be in the minority here, but I didn't care for this experience much.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Flat and black. Slightly transparent at the edge.

Smell - Hoppy. Grapefruit. Spicy rye. Roasted malt.

Taste - Grapefruit hops. Very bitter. Coffee and grassy bitterness. Rye spiciness.

Mouthfeel - Medium low carbonation. Medium body. Very bitterness.

Overall - Just doesn't do it for me. Barely a stout.

I had this on tap at Sheffield's in lakeview. I really would be doing this beer a disadvantage to truly rate it because I had a FFF brian brau in the other hand. It was a very good stout and would enjoy another. It was extremely untypical with it's hoppy characteristics. Because of my aforementioned opposing beer I will refrain from calling it too simple.

On-tap at Fountainhead for the Half Acre/Perennial Event.

A - Pours black, light tan head, wisps.

S - Rye up front, dark chocolate, dry roast notes, and hops. Pretty straight-forward and that's exactly what I was expecting.

T - More of the same...lots of rye, roast, toasted, malts, and dark chocolate bitterness. Alcohol is there for 7%, but this beer is very fresh so I can't knock it too hard for that. Perhaps a little too much rye and hops for me, which fatigues my palate a bit.

M - Medium to full body, rich, creamy, good carbonation, dry roasted finish.

O - A nice stout, but not something I could drink a lot of. The rye and hops are just a bit too much for me (even though I love both), and I think I'd rather have a porter or brown then go back to this when I'm in the mood for something dark. Decent.

not bad, not great. Got this bottle a few months ago at Sam's in Chicago. Poured with a medium head and a little lace. Color is very dark mahoganey. Aroma is roasty, malty, dark ripe fruit, hoppy. flavor's about the same. Bit of a boozy finish. Noting special. Body's ok, decent carbonation. finishi is ok too.

a - opened the bottle and filled my surly darkness tulip. classic silky stout pour with a generous mocha white head that hung out to party. lacing was semi-sticky and the beer has a nice glossy look to it.

s - no surprises here, roasted malts...a bit of a porter like sting. touch of burnt chocolates.

t - roasted malts with a tingle of porter.

m - something about this beer keeps screaming porter to me and i think it is the mouth. there is a watery tingle to it just like a porter. i tend to like my stouts a bit thicker and richer, but not bad.

o - overall a good beer, but in the land of stouts, this one is not special...except in the way that it is porter-like.

Poured into a snifter.

3.5 A: Black color. One and a half fingers of creamy light brown head with average retention and a moderate amount of lacing.

4.0 S: The rye makes this one unique and fairly interesting. Roasted barley, big hit of coffee, earthy spicy rye, and a fairly strong citrusy hop kick. Underneath all that there are some chocolatety and nutty notes.

3.5 T: The taste is a bit of a letdown after the nose. This isn't bad by any means, but it seems a bit unbalanced. The rye and hops dominate the stout flavors. If the stout was a bit more robust, this could be a helluva beer. Anyway, moderate bitterness, earthy rye, citrusy hops. The stout offers coffee and nuts foremost, with chocolate and caramel in the background.

3.0 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Carbonation is a little high for my liking. Not particularly creamy.

3.5 D: Not bad and I love the rye flavor, but the rest of the beer is a bit lacking. I'm not a big fan of stouts with noticeable hop components either.

(A)- Pours a pitch black color. Some tan froth and lace.

(S)- A nice mellow roasted grain and subtle spice. Bits of cocoa and raisin.

(T)- Similar to the smell. A nice combo of cocoa, raisin, subtle spice, and roasted grain.

(M)- A nice carbonation level and balance. Good balanced roasted bits and smooth but rich malts.

(D)- A nice stout for sure. Balanced and easy drinking. Well done.

So now I know basically where hydrometers and whatnot come from. Thanks, Half Acre. This bit of edutainment pours a thick dark black-brown topped by finger of ecru foam. The nose comprises chocolate, roasted malts, cedar, pine, greens, and flowers. The taste holds notes of dark chocolate, light red grapes, black pepper, roasted malts, generic wood (kind of a pressed fiberboard character), greens, and the white part of an orange peel. The body is a hefty-feeling medium, with a moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, a nice stout, but I don't think the hops, rye, and roast contingents really get along all that well. Interestingly, though, this stuff goes down pretty easily.

I got this in back in early May '09 at the Sam's by the Goose Island pub. The way it was marketed off to the side on a barrel suggested to me that is was a special purchase that they wanted to sell. I was a bit worried since it could have been an item they wanted to get rid of.

Pours out a nice molasses brown. Warmed up a bit from the cold fridge temp. Nice sticky foam, off white. Smells like a brown ale, spicy and yeasty.

Tastes burnt, lightly sweet. Bitterness. Lots of bitterness, in a burnt sugar kind of thing. Not entirely pleasant, the flavor reminds me of burnt rye toast and not the scrape-able kind.
Very much like heavily roasted spent coffee grounds.

Medium body, light carbonation. Filling. Good one, but not something to buy a six pack of.

On tap at Jerry's. My expectations are low, as there have been very few HA beers I've liked (other than Daisy Cutter which is my go to beer).

A - Black beer with some reddish tones on the edges. There is a half finger of dirty-white or grayish head on it. Actually a tone of fat rings of lacing left that looked pretty good while I drank it.

S - Chocolate, roasted malts, a bit of rye which sets this one a part slightly from other stouts. Not bad.

T - Chocolate and some bitter roast with a bit of spicy rye characteristic. The spice is not strong enough to be hot, but adds some interesting flavors to this. This is pretty solid.

M - Creamy, full bodied, moderate carbonation.

O - Surpringly, this is a pretty solid beer, not sure I would seek it out, but it's not bad drinking.

22 oz bottle served in a DFH signature glass. 2012 vintage.

A: Pours a thick dark black with a one finger khaki colored head forming on the pour. The head recedes to a thin film and ring. Splotchy sheets of lace are left on the glass.

S: Big notes of chocolate and rye bread are very present up front. Some dark fruits and green leaf hops are present on the finish.

T: Rye bread spiciness and the bready malt flavors that accompany show themselves up front. The chocolate malts and general roasted flavors shine in the mid palate. The finish is mild hop bitterness.

M: Medium to heavier bodied with a medium carbonation level and semi dry roasty finish.

O: I liked the flavors the rye incorporated. It didn't dominate the chocolate flavors of the stout and it really balanced everything out.

Tasted blind as part of Blind BIF #4

22 oz. bomber poured into a snifter.

As it exits the bottle, it looks like a viscous black and I think i'm going to be in trouble very soon. It creates a solid two finger head that left as quickly as it came. In the glass, the beer's an opaque dark dark brown. Thick lace has its way of hanging out for a while.

The aroma that hits me first is a bitter chocolate, followed by some roasted nuts and maybe a little vanilla. No hops here, just some great roasted malt in the nose. I'm thinking a robust porter before diving in.

Taste is a rich sweetness of something like burnt caramel with nuts. Hard to describe that flavor. Then there is a deep bitterness from roasted malt with typical chocolate and coffee, however, there is a rather astringent finish that sort of detracts from this unique flavor. It's insanely roasty, but there's also a strange sweetness that makes me wonder if there's a little lactose there at all. As I drink more, I'm wondering if the astringency is due to some age on oak. Starting to remind me of a baby oak aged yeti.

Carbonation is a bit sharp from this full-bodied brew. Definitely some residual feeling on the cheek as it goes. Also seems a bit hot from the alcohol, even though this doesn't seem like a high gravity brew.

Overall, this is one of the roastiest beers I've ever had. If there's no coffee in here, I'd be incredibly impressed with the flavor they packed in. However, the bitterness is almost overpowering and takes it slightly out of balance. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy this beer, but I'm afraid there's just something just a tad off about it and my rating has to reflect that.

A: Pours near black with a finger or two of light brown foam that slowly faded into a fuzzy film and collar. Tiny spots of lace were left.
S: Very smoky with strong notes of rye and earthy hops.
T: Huge and predominate flavors of rye. This is definitely a rye lovers beer. Spicy, earthy and grainy all around with hints of chocolate, vanilla, caramel as an afterthought. Hops are bitter, earthy and herbal. The rye by far dominates.
M: Frothy carbonation, medium-full body, full mouthfeel, foamy and airy.
O: Super spicy. For what it is it’s awesome, but you gotta love rye. Thanks again jbck109.

Black and brown. Head was minimal, less than a quarter of an inch. Good lace. Good retention.
Aroma of roast, chocolate malt, rye was subdued.

Taste was hoppy and rye like for the bready spice melding with toffee and caramel. This is hoppy even though there is a substantial malt bill.

a: black as night. thick tan colored head.

s: roasty malts. chocolate.

t: chocolate. roasted malts. some coffee on the tail end. a rye spiciness accents the flavor

m: smooth and creamy. medium body. finishes a tad dry

o: decent stout. not on the same level as Big Hugs in my opinion but that is an imperial stout of course. rye adds a nice accent, not dominant in any way. Not sure I'd seek this out again but glad I had a chance to try it.

My bottle says 6.5% ABV. 2011 vintage (called the brewery to confirm based on the name thank you list on the label; anyway...
Aromas initially start with dark roasted malts with a substantial earthy quality, maybe from the hops, maybe from the rye, the taste will probably be an indicator once I sample. As it warms you get more dark chocolate.
The taste is initially bitter dark chocolate with some coffee undertones. Soon after you are greeted with the aggressive hops in this beer. It's not bitter per say but the earthy hops which must have been used in this brew are much higher than your average American stout where the chocolate malts are supposed to shine. I cannot really detect the rye although it's presence is appreciated/noted with the dry finish. As it warms you can detect the rye characteristics more, not sure I would know if was rye if I was tasting this blind but the fact that I know I can comment on the spicy dry flavors.
Mouthfeel is full bodied with spot on carbonation. You are left with a continuous stickiness following each gulp/sip because of the higher IBU level. Overall I really enjoyed this beer, which is saying a lot because I usually hate dark malty beers which are highly hopped. This rye stout is quite interesting and worth a try if you can find it, definitely recommended for the unique and quality flavors that this brew offers.

Poured in to a pint glass.

A: This beer pours a deep dark, thick opaque brown with some light mahogany hues around the bottom edges. A one finger of light brown, foamy head stands on top. Head recedes quickly and leaves minimal spots of lacing on the glass.

S: Nose is strong bitter chocolate notes mingled with a prominent rye presence. Roasted notes with hints of lighter milk chocolate are also present.

T: Taste starts big and bitter chocolate with a heavy focus on the rye spice. Roasted malts really begin to fill out the middle and mingle in with the sharp rye spicing. Roast finally wins out and really captures the finish with softer milk chocolate and cocoa notes hanging in the after taste.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, thick, creamy body with a chewy, sticky finish.

D: Goes down relatively easy, tasty, somewhat filling, mild kick, and an interesting take on the style. At time the rye character was a bit much, but the roastiness and chocolate help this beer out.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, rye, and cocoa aromas. Taste is much the same with rye and cocoa flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that smells better than it tastes in my opinion.

Appearance: Dark brown/black body with 2 finger dirty khaki crown that shows lots of retention and lace.

Smell: Faint does of coffee and roast malt. Bready malt and minor spice note from the yeast. NIce bbq'd meat quality.

Taste: Coffee note and bitterness up front leading to a mild roasted malt profile and a slightly sweet finish.

Mouthfeel: Too thin.

Driknkability: Thin mouthfeel and low abv makes this one fairly drinkable for the style. But the flavor profile is lackluster.

Pours out about equal parts black and brown. Light brown head, .33" in depth. Average lacing in terms of stickiness. Head retention was around average as well.

Mellow aroma, chocolate malt, roast were the preminent aromas, I was searching for rye, but it just wasn't within my sensory perception abilities at that point. Perhaps the tinge of herbal greenness witin the aroma is what the rye lends, but it wasn't at all clear to me what was giving off said aroma.

The taste and mouthfeel in fact corroborate the claim of rye. It comes across as both hops and rye malt, not really spicy I'd say because of the greater percentage of barley, and sheer amount of it to make a stout of this heft, but nonetheless, perceptible beyond its lacking aroma. Caramel and tofffee intrusions, we're starting to get slightly complex here. Rye, herbs, roast, caramel, toffee, spice. . . mouthfeel finished dry, not spicy or thick. Smoother than most rye beers. Not too heavy on the chocolate all the way through, even as it warmed. Slightly bitter, slightly ashy, even citrusy at times. Definitely complex, but not for the sake of being so.

Solid effort.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a pint glass. Pours rich and dark out of the bottle to little head, settling on a nice caramel lace. The smokey aroma blends nicely with a hint of coffee. This stout drinks very smooth and is balanced across the palate. Cellar if you like, but definitely drink now.

2011 Vintage

Appearance -- Pours a rich dark brown with a slim cap of sudsy khaki head that eventually collapses into a fine haze and a dirty ring. pinpoint lacing all over. Looks good.

Smell -- Cocoa, roast malt, coffee beans, rye spiciness, and an abundance of aromatic hops: citrus, floral, and mildly herbal.

Taste -- Cocoa, faint coffee, roasted malt, rye spice, and citrusy/floral hops. Malt sweetness is moderate evoking holiday chocolate oranges, however the malt sweetness becomes a bit sticky as the beer warms. Finish is minty hops and cocoa.

Mouthfeel -- Medium-bodied with moderate, almost fluffy carbonation. Very pleasant.

Drinkability -- Overall, quite nice. It's a pleasant diversion from the typical stout. The spiciness of the rye lent some depth to the cocoa and the aromatic hopping was a nice touch, though the malt sweetness seemed to become cloying as the beer warmed up.

Notes: While this really doesn't have any impact on the beer, I really enjoy the label design.

650ml bottle poured into a Half Acre holiday snifter.

Pours a nice deep cola brown, almost black in color, a thin brown head head appears, almost a finger high which recedes quickly leaving a bit of film atop the beer and some light sticky lace. The aroma is very light, toasted dark barley, a bit of roasted coffee and light bittersweet chocolate with a touch of prickly rye that lingers behind. The beer is much more impactful on the tongue, lots of spicy rye, bitter dark chocolate with a nice amount of dark malted grain that lingers behind. The body is surprisingly full and lively, prickly on the tongue that coats the mouth fairly well. The finish is a touch too abrasive from the carbonation and very dry.

Verdict: A nice easy stout from Half Acre, it's not in your face, but it doesn't hide anything either, very sessionable and enjoyable as a nightcap. After having this and Hearths Ablaze, I am really beginning to enjoy their lighter American Stouts.
