Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Big, but not huge, this American Chocolate Rye Stout fires off a lot of coffee and chocolate notes. Balances well, but rides high on hop character at 60 IBU's while the Rye finishes it dry.

Dark brown, but does look a little thin and the head is whispy.

The rye aroma is strong and the peppery spice works with the charred malt and coffee.

Chocolate pops in the flavor. The roasted malt is heavy. Good piney and earthy hop addition. Rye in the finish.

A tad thin, good carbonation.

A very good beer, but would be better with a beefy body.

Pours a very dark brown, near black, with a noticeable dark red hue in direct light and a solid finger of light brown foam.

Tons of chocolate & roasted coffee, with a fair amount of earthy hops, and rye spiciness.

Flavor melds with the aroma perfectly. Bitter/semi-sweet chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, and the rye adds an interesting spicy characteristic.

Heavy-bodied, medium carbonation, bitter, spiced, prickly hops and rye.

Overall, not as solid as I was hoping for, but a darn good brew and interesting until the end. The rye becomes much more pronounced as this warms up, which can be a good/or bad thing, depending on your taste.

On tap, poured into a shaker. The beer is a dark, almost opaque, brown-black topped by a soft, creamy, light brown head that has abundant retention and lacing. The aroma is a strong burnt toast and rye bread (burnt rye bread?) note with a light chocolate undertone. It's a medium / medium-high bitter with a supporting, medium-light sweetness. The texture is somewhere between oily and syrupy with a soft, creamy carbonation. The body is full of roasted rye and dark chocolate notes that linger through the finish and leaves a spicy rye aftertaste (much rye!).

Very rich coffee and spicy rye flavor, deep roast, creamy body in a relatively low ABV package. Totally satisfying, not the least bit thin or watery. Would work nicely with a light barrel treatment ... or as a hearty breakfast beer.
