Big thanks to the guys at half acre for the trio of barrel aged bottles. And per their recommendation, went out for thai food with my wife to enjoy the bottle.

Poured a slightly hazy bright orange, with a fair amount of head that quickly recedes and leaves a fair bit of lacing.

First off, I know the peppercorns are there, but I am not sure I would have picked up on them had I not known. We felt there was a lot of sourness/funk in the nose. Some barrel, but not alot. Even a little bit of a fruity sweetness. A ton going on and left me hoping it tasted like I was being led to expect.

I really really liked how this tasted. Very bright, slightly sour/tart and a tiny bit spicy all at the same time. Was surprised that the first thing I thought was this is fruity like the Captain Fantasy. I didn't get much of the barrel, but found some deep fruitiness either from the pinot or currants.

Easy to drink, period. Low carbonation made it smooth in the mouth and going down, not bitter or harsh. Easy, great.

Man, I wish they made more of this. I wish I had another to see how it develops over time. I wish I had another one to drink right now.

A: Took some effort to get the cork out but was greeted with a loud 'pop' when it released. Pours a bright and relatively clear, golden peach color. Sitting on top is 1/2 a finger of creamy, bright white head that hangs around for ages. Big sticky curtains of lace stick all down the inside if the glass. Carbonation was quite active.

S: Right off the bat, I picked up the unmistakable aroma of Long Thai Peppercorns. Amazing that the peppercorn smell was so apparent after nine months in a wine barrel. Also noticed was the rich fruity aroma of Pinot grapes and oak. Heather said she picked up some sour prune, if there is such a thing.

T: First flavor was very Pinot. After a short wait, the peppercorn came through as did some citrus, oaky vanilla, sour red grapes, and yeasty sourdough. Oddly enough, I picked up some basil at the very end, as well.

M: Suprisingly full and creamy with a middle that turns peppery/spicy and a finish that is all dry and oaky and slightly tangy.

O: Frigging killer! The most fully realised of all of Half Acre's barrel aged beers, so far. I want more of stuff like this from HA. On another note, I really hope they bring back regular Long Thai Rainbow Rye this cans!

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip. Bottle 149/177.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy golden orange color with a good inch of foam resting on top.

Smell: The peppercorns are still noticeable, and some candy sweet light biscuity malt, oak, vanilla, and pinot grapes are present as well.

Taste: The flavor is sweet up front. Some light malt, then a flourish of spice and yeast. Vanilla and oak lead in for the fairly soft pinot flavor, but the sour flavor grows and climaxes at the end of the sip.

Mouthfeel: Overall, this has a medium body. It starts out a little bit on the full and creamy side, turns peppery and spicy, and finishes on the dry side.

Overall: There is a great level of complexity here, and the sweet and sour notes hit a sweet spot in my flavor palate.

Into a tulip glass it pours a bright orange, lightly hazy, with a thin skim of white foam. Spotty lacing that sticks here and there around the edges of the glass.

Earthy peppercorns are still recognizable, barrel notes of vanilla and woody oak, even some fruity cantaloupe esters from the yeast. Rich depth and barrel complexity, something indescribable going on for sure.

Lightly tart and mellow, barrel notes of vanilla and woody oak. Earthy with a nice dose of tart fruit. Mild acidity. Dry aftertaste, again with a mellow feel throughout. Pleasant and easy drinking... had some similar barrel character to New Glarus R&D Gueuze interestingly enough.

A - Golden colored beer with a finger of white head. Left sheets and stick on the sides and some nice lace.

S - I liked the original beer quite a bit actually. The peppercorn smell is quite noticable as well as the rye. I'm not a huge fan of the currant addition, as I perceive it to add a kind of sweet syrupy quality that detracts. Brett and lacto seem to be one of those things everyone is adding lately to experiment and "wild" their beers up, sometimes less is more.

T - Different, but not necessarily different good. Some peppercorn spice, lacto sourness, currant syrupy sweetness. A bunch of stuff thrown together, but I don't really care for the particular blend.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

O - Didn't hate it, but wouldn't say I liked it either. Nice try, but just not for me.

Pours a hazy gold with a foamy off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with malt, grain, and fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour grain and currant flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer where actual currant qualities come through better in the taste.

Thanks to Ethan for sharing this rarity with me. I'm usually first or second in line at most Half Acre releases, and the one week I'm out of town is the release where they choose to give out freebies - *sigh*. Served in a plastic cup, as was standard at Sean's fine fĂȘte.

A - A finger of white foam settles to a thin cap and thicker collar, leaving behind a bit of splotchy lace. The beer is a hazy bright orange color. Looks a lot like the base beer.

S - This also smells a lot like the base beer - the peppercorns are front and center, with their unique and brash flavor. There are also notes of lemon, ginger, rye malt, and yeast that closely resemble the base beer. The brett and lacto seem to have imparted yogurt and musky, sweet, and funky sweat flavors (someone said sweaty genitalia). I think I liked the more direct approach of the base beer but this still smelled pretty good - not getting much currant or wine either.

T - This is very odd. While the aroma is intense and fairly complex the flavor is somewhat bland and dull. Grain, bread and yeast dominate, with minimal spice or sourness. Have the peppercorns numbed my tastebuds? Strangely, I said something very similar about the base beer, even though I had no recollection of that review when I tasted the barrel-aged version. Not bad, but a huge disappointment considering all the the things added to the beer.

M - Pleasant moderate carbonation, medium body, some grain to the texture, and no obvious alcohol (not that I expected any, as the base beer was only 5%).

D - Very odd experience. It largely tastes like the base beer with some yogurt poured in - the other stuff was hard to perceive. One of Half Acre's better barrel-aged attempts, but still baby steps here as far as wild ales and funky saisons go. Still, this was pretty easy to drink.
