BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Half Acre Beer Company
Illinois, United States | website

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We've brewed a variant of Double Daisy Cutter we're calling Galactic Double Daisy Cutter. This version highlights Galaxy hops, a bruiser grown in Australia specifically to make palates numb. This beer insisted on being a beast. Uber-hazy and jam packed with the sticky, Galaxy hops, this beer isn't for the faint of heart.

As if pulled from the core of a distant, inhospitable planet, The Galactic Double Daisy is juicy and dank, rough and tumble and beautifully ugly. Strap on your boots and pull down some of the ooze, Galactic Double Daisy is here.

This is a very well put together, juicier and way danker version of Daisy Cutter. The classic Daisy Cutter feel comes through but in a much more extreme way. There is a nice contrast between the sweet fruit notes and the bitterness, with both sides sort of clashing but somehow playing well together. Lingering bitter aftertaste along with a mouth coating of overripe mango and passionfruit. Excellent.

Just a quick note. Was mightly impressed with this Midwest take on a New England style ipa. Really hit the right notes with the citrusy aroma, hazy color and bitterness while packing a nice wollop. I'm really glad I got to try it. thanks to Paul for sending along!

Holy aroma batman! This beer is bursting with galaxy! It pours a nice hazy golden color. I'm not sure if I'm smelling a beer or if I'm smelling a handful of galaxy hops. Overwhelmingly delicious citrus fruity smell and it tastes just like it smells. This is a hop bomb but it's not overly bitter and it's extremely well balanced. Great carbonation. I just tried daisy cutter for the first time, and after being underwhelmed by it I was expecting something similar with this. I got the exact opposite with GD daisy cutter, this beer is underrated if anything. Very well done and I will be seeking this out again for sure

Pours a clear deep golden orange color with over a finger of an off-white head.

Aroma showcases the Galaxy hop nicely. Big dankness, coupled with juicy passionfruit, tangerine peel, sugar-coated grapefruit, papaya, very jammy (strawberry to be specific), and pine resin. There's a confectioners sugar sweetness. It's juicy for days.

Taste follows the nose nicely. It's very juicy, although it does have a nice bitterness to it (especially when it is a little colder). Filled with passionfruit, papaya, floral, strawberry jam, candied orange, grapefruit peel, huge dankness, and has a pine resin/rubbery bitterness. Malt only shows through a candied sweetness.

High medium body. Creamy and smooth carbonation. Quite oily, but not a sticky as I expected.

This is a treat to have. Typical midwest style DIPA, but a bigger juicy quality to it than usual. The best version of this beer I've had (2016). A well done hoppy beer by a brewery that makes a lot of them.

Acquired from Bottles and Cans in beautiful Chicago, IL. Drank out of a Boulevard Brewery tulip.

Look: Interesting to see a Galaxy beer that doesn't look like orange juice, but I guess I'm just accustomed to the East Coast Galaxy hopped beers. Golden, mostly translucent color. Vigorous aggressive carbonation with lots of small bubbles and an off-white eggshell two and a half finger head. Not sure if I prefer this clarity to the East Coast hop bombs, but it definitely looks appealing.

Smell: Good googly moogly that thing is juicy. Absolutely packed with tropical fruit; heavy pineapple and citrus, strawberry jam, over-ripened dragonfruit and papaya. Low alcohol detected, cotton candy sweetness with a touch of floral flavor in the back end.

Flavor: Less sweetness than the nose would indicate. Grapefruit rind, freshly cut grass, spice, flower petals in the front end of the taste, tropical fruit is there but subdued. Low initial bitterness that lingers and builds without becoming prohibitive or unpleasant. Definitely a lot going on in the hop profile, very clearly hopped to high hell. Malt bill takes a supporting role in this one, but is a bit sweet for my typical tastes if I'm being critical and I am. A bit of alcohol warmth. Despite what the label would tell you, I don't find this one overly dank if I'm being Frank.

Feel: Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel that gives way to dryness. Carbonation is good for a tickle, but doesn't distract much. I like my IPAs on the thick side, so I was well pleased with this.

Overall, really good but I'm pleased I didn't wait in line for two hours for a bottle. Good demonstration of the hop, but the overabundance of the Galaxy hop does definitely overshadow some other strengths I enjoyed in original DDC and even DC. A good showcase beer, really.

Had on tap during CCBW 2016. Nicely balanced DIPA with prominent hop characteristic, nice galaxy hops coming through, and a solid balanced malt background. Not as much fruity notes from the hops as there was the more piney, sappy notes. Quite pleasant particularly with a balanced bitterness. However, it was good, but not as good as the hype would have had me believe. Well worth a try if you can get it, but don't expect a world-class beer, just a very very good one.

Had this over the weekend, was really nice, flavor was great, very nice orange color, I do wish there was a little more aroma. The galaxy hops are quite present, but they are slightly subdued by the malt. All in all, delicious!

No bottle date but I picked this up at the bottle release. Let's pour this bomber in the Half Acre tulip for the taste.

Look- Pours a deep sparkling transparent gold color leaving a finger of white foam.

Smell- Dank spicy weed, passionfruit, grapefruit fresh rubber.

Taste- Passionfruit, grapefruit, dank spicy weed followed by some floral esters. There's some rubber/fusel alcohol in the finish.

Feel- Resiny hop oil slick with a bitter dry hop bite.

Overall- Another winner from Half Acre! Dank and resiny hop goodness with a slick easy drinking feel. A world class beer for 10 bucks a bomber? Yes please!

Pours a very hazy, dark golden orange color with bright tangerine edges and a two finger white head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting cap. Excellent retention, taking a while to settle and coating the glass with streaks of soapy lacing.

Dank sticky icky aroma with juicy buds, earthy resins, fresh cut grass, pine needle and spruce tip. The is followed by subtle summit onion character and a decent amount of tropical/citrus fruit sweetness. Light malt backbone with caramel sweetness, bread, biscuit and grainy graham cracker.

Full body with a blast of dry, earthy hop bitterness that lingers over the sweeter notes and malt backbone into a dry finish. Dank, earthy and resinous with sticky pine sap and spruce tip. Again, there's a funky summit/onion presence but it's subtle enough to provide balance without hindering the dank sticky hop bitterness. These elements are countered by a decent amount of citrus/tropical fruit and a sweet malt backbone. Lots of grapefruit and melon along with pineapple, orange slice and lemon pith. Some caramel sweetness but again, provides balance without interfering with the complex hop profile. Pale malts with bread, biscuit and grainy graham cracker. Overall, just an awesome hoppy beer that is complex while remaining extremely flavorful and dangerously drinkable. Love it!

Very typical huge midwest, juicy astringent IPA. Very big, sharp hop bite and a decent amount of biscuity malt. The galaxy hops do leap out of the glass with a good swirl, but they are not as pungent or dank as they could be considering some of the other hop achievements Half Acre has put out (namely Navaja and Space). Very juicy clear and pulpy fruit juices - papaya, mango, orange, strawberry. The dry and almost plastic Australian hop not is there as well.

Very nice beer, but half acre does much better

Bomber to a snifter

Pours a bit cloudy of a gold with a finger of foam. Retention isn't too bad, lacing is good also. Low carbonation, not bad looking

Smell is pretty balanced between the malts and hops. Grapefruit and citrus with a sweet bready caramel malt.

Taste follows, citrus and grapefruit backed by a strong caramel malt

Feel is a medium body, alcohol is hidden pretty well

Overall disappointed, I think maybe this bottle is past it's prime?

Serving: 22 oz. bomber poured into a Cigar City snifter. No bottled on date, but it's no more than a few weeks old since the release.

A: Pours a nice amber-orange color. Pretty clear. Foamy 1/2-finger white head that sticks around.

S: Very floral and earthy. Lots of fresh flowers, daisies, pine cone. Just a splash of lemon-lime or papaya for a fruity-sweet note.

T: Very earthy and dry. Grass, pine, spearmint, orange, hibiscus.

M: Nice and full. Great carbonation. Aggressively hopped, but not overly bitter. Very, very dry on the finish.

O: Being somewhat familiar with the galaxy hop, I think overall this is a nice showcase for it. Very floral and earthy, which is a nice change-up from the typical tropical, citrus and fruity hops of the Citra and Centennial variety. I do think I prefer Double Daisy Cutter to this one as this tends to be a bit too dry for me and DDC is more balanced. Either way, both are better than regular Daisy Cutter as they take what is already a great beer to a whole other level.

Recommendation: Definitely seek this beer out if you're in town for the release. But stay away from the long lines of the taproom release, and instead check out the bottle shops over the next couple of days.

Huge. golden, slightly brown. May be most powerfully aromatic beer I've had. Loads of tropical fruit -pineapple, orange, lemon. Similar taste with a bit of that Daisy Cutter grassiness in the finish. Mouthfeel is crazy - both sticky and tangy. Went to Half Acre on release day to get this. Saw the line and drove away. A week later I found it in my local bottle shop. It was still cool from being just off the truck. Now I almost wish I'd gotten in that line so I could have more.

Made it to Half Acre for the release. Haven’t had it from the bottle yet, but got some on tap and also on cask with more Galaxy hops and Citra Hops. The cask was amazing BTW, so if you see it, try it. As for the beer itself, it poured a slightly hazy burnt orange body. Nice white frothy head. Aroma of tropical fruits, hops, almost no sweetness. Taste is very similar. Lots of fruit, good amount of bitterness, and not much sweetness, just the way I like it.

Absolutely fantastic beer. The Galactic hop from Australia contributes to this complex yet very refreshing double. Bubblegum-like aroma, with tropical fruit and wheat notes, all tied together by the comforting and familiar hoppiness. Cool, slightly dry aftertaste. Just a good good beer, and possibly the best for the summers.

Poured in a 12oz sniffter

L: hazy straw-like color. Nice bright white head, very sticky and slow to dissapate.

S: melon, touch of booze, tropical.

T: Classic tropical hop notes hit right away, followed by a bit of boozy bitterness . Finishes with a very pleasant freshly cut grass note.

F: highly drinkable. Nice bubbly carb, big mouthfeel.

O: half acre makes some fantastic dipa's and this is no exception. Great beer. Don't know if I want to go through that line again though.

This has to be one of the best smelling beers I have ever experienced. Grapefruit and grass make for a really bright smelling beer.

Grapefruit is the dominate flavor, really refreshing enjoyable drink. Definitely a big step up from regular dc.

Poured from bomber into a Pipeworks snifter.

A: Pours a deep amber with a finger of foam with minimal retention, leaving behind heavy lace at the crown of the glass.

S: Orange zest, grapefruit rind, pineapple, and a sweat, bready maltiness.

T: Juicy clementine immediately, with other citrus flavors following in tow. That signature Half Acre bready malt flavor punches through right as the citrus notes fade, and a slight alcoholic taste makes itself known in the finish.

M: Crisp and dry with a medium body.

O: I much prefer this from a bottle than on tap, though, regardless, this is a very good beer, and probably my favorite DIPA coming out of Chicago. Leaps and bounds better than anything I've had from Pipeworks, Citra Ninja included.

Bomber to teku

A: darker orange with some amber or ruby notes

S: wonderful mix of melon, bubblegum, tangerines, and pear; also a general aroma that's consistent with tropical fruit aromas

T: a big letdown after the fantastic nose: a light, juicy fruitiness (like fruit punch gatorade, but better) followed by classic daisy cutter flavors (malty and lightly hoppy)

M: wet and juicy, so pretty pleasant

O: a good beer that smells much better than it tastes. the nose is just fantastic

Pours amber in color with some hues of burnt orange and a moderate hazyness. Head is one and a quarter fingers off white fluffy and retains nicely.

Smell is incredibly juicy.bright fruity hop aromas with notes of tangerines, nectarines, mangos and some faint pinapple hop aromas. Nice floral hop presence typical to daisy cutter near the mid section however the sweet citrusy tangerine and nectarine aromas dominate.

Taste is defiantly hop forward. There is a big herbal hoppy oil vegetal flavor and moderate bitterness forward before the sweeter citrus hop flavors come out. Citrus hops also have notes of tangerines and nextarines. Caramel malt is amped up slightly from daisy cutter giving it a slightly sweeter flavor and a bigger husky grain flavor.

Mouthfeel has tons of hoppy oils and resin along with a big tropical and floral bitterness. Sticky hop oils are balanced with moderate amount of carbonation and a good malty sweetness.

Thanks to rudzud for sharing.

Pours a decent creamy fluffy 1/2 finger head, fades semi slowly, nice lacing, murky tangerine color.

Nose is whoa, tons of galaxy hops, citrus galore, dank resin, some tangerine, pith, passion fruit resin, little rind, hint of sweet malts, ripe bitter fruit.

Taste brings lots of tropical fruit juice, sweet candy malts mixed with it, fluffy malts, passion fruit, resin and dank hops, pith, grapefruit peel, tangerine juice, etc. Nice fluffy malt and hint sweetness balance with decent bitterness. Quite nice, finish is drier and sticky but sweet, hint of booze warmth, more chewy bitterness, more citrus fruit too, pretty tasty though.

Mouth is med bod, hint of booze, nice carb.

Overall good but mixed, started really nice but the more I had it it got a little more meh. Too bitter rindy and sweet, bit still quite nice.

Pours a cloudy, sunshine orange, with medium carbonation and overall a very pretty brew.

Smell is wonderful, definitely getting a cotton candy-esque sweetness that is countered with a tangy hop bitterness.

Taste doesn't quite meet my expectations, but that's alright still a tremendous brew. Tastes like freshly baked biscuits, slight citrus, I'm always intrigued by the galactic hop, very tasty but can't quite put my finger on the taste.

Mouthfeel is marvelous, a somewhat bizarre bitter after taste, but nothing I can't get over.

Overall very glad I picked up 3 of these when I had the chance as I haven't seen them anywhere since aside from tap.

I've always been surprised that Half Acre doesn't have a year-round version of Double Daisy Cutter; their regular DC is a standard, but the double IPA version is much better, and lends itself really well to variants like this. The galaxy hops pair really well with the grassy and slightly bitter DDC, making for a refreshing and easy-drinking beer that is honestly tastier than I remembered (despite having given it a generic "4.75" when I had it a couple years back).

It's not quite top of the barrel (although partially since galaxy hops aren't my absolute favorite), but it's one of the better DIPAs out there, and has enough of DDC in it to give it a bit of distinction from your typical DIPA. Still could use a LITTLE bit of a tweak to make it really stand out, but as is, a top-notch effort from HA, and probably my 3rd favorite of their yearly releases (behind Beer Hates Astronauts and certain batches of Navaja).

Appearance - Pours a hazy, sunset orange with a half finger's worth of white head. Fair retention, resulting in a broken layer of surface suds. Fair lacing, mostly spotty, with good stick.

Smell - Fresh orange zest, pineapple, light floral notes and a light breadiness.

Taste - Follows the nose. An enormous amount of juicy orange flavor. Moderate pineapple and light grapefruit. Vaguely touches on mint. Malts come through mid-taste and near the finish with bready qualities and a faint toastiness to produce a balanced finish. Light citrus pith in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full in body with fair carbonation. Smooth and somewhat silky before a semi-dry finish.

Overall - Yeah, this beer is delicious. Can't help but think Jai alai when drinking it; they're very similar, except this thing packs a punch at 8%. Well worth trading for. If you can get it, get it!
