A: Had to wrestle the cork out but it finally let loose with a mighty 'pop'. Deep mahogany/Grade B maple syrup color with two fingers of creamy light tan head. Retention was fantastic with a fair amount of foam hanging around 'till the very end. Specks and sheets of lace were left behind.

S: Initial aroma of bread & butter pickles! This quickly faded into the background as aromas of green apple, vanilla, grape skins, and a bit of coconut come to the forefront. Heather said it reminded her of her Polish grandmothers' home made pickles.

T: Exactly as above with some tart berry thrown in for good measure. Just a suggestion of Pinot. More wood than wine.

M: Suprisingly smooth and silky with a bit of Rye malt dryness. Just the right amount of lacto tang for good measure. A bit of spicy wood late in the finish.

O: We really liked what the barrel brought to the base beer. The key to this one is what temperature change does to this over the course of a full 750ml sample size. Allow it to warm, swirl in all the yeast, and enjoy. We did!

On-tap at FoBAB 2011. Served in a taster pint glass.

A - A finger of tan foam settles to a solid cap, thick collar, and no lacework. Transparent dark bronze body.

S - Dill. Tons of oak here. Reminds me a little of Vagabond in that respect, but with some light pinot character. The apples added to the barrel lend a tart appleskin flavor. However, this is mostly overwhelmed by oak and dill - base beer is long gone.

T - Taste is again a mix of tart apples, dill, oak, and light lactic sourness. There's an odd stale hop flavor that was unexpected, but the rye base doesn't really show up to play.

M - Medium bodied, with an extremely dry and tannic texture, and prickly medium-high carbonation. Probably redundant here, but too much oak.

D - Reminds me a little of some Jolly Pumpkin beers I've had with the intense oak and light dill notes. Not a complete miss, but kind of one-dimensional. Still, everything Half Acre brought this year was drinkable, which is a step in the right direction!
