Notes / Commercial Description:
Imagine a comic book. The kind with superheroes and punching and stuff. Now imagine that most of those superheroes are kind of total jerks. Add in a lot of profanity. No, more profanity than that. Ok, now throw in felonious owls, spectral bovines, gorilla arms, lots of bears, unplanned pregnancy, and 19th century boxer John L. Sullivan. And then a little more profanity. And be sure to include almost nothing about theology or space exploration.

Now imagine—and this is key—being able to drink all that. And then imagine it's called Beer Hates Astronauts, because that's what we're calling it. And we're calling it that because it's the beer version of God Hates Astronauts, which is the actual comic I completely failed to properly evoke above.

This is just the latest step in creator Ryan Browne's attempt to dominate the world by means of one of the most unsummarizable comics in existence. Having recently Kickstarted the deluxe hardcover edition of God Hates Astronauts with massive success, he has joined forces with Half Acre for a groundbreaking venture in distributing comics in hoppy liquid form.

Beer Hates Astronauts will be set free from its containment unit here at the brewery on Friday, August 30. It is a 7% ABV India Pale Ale brewed with Vienna malt and Citra hops.

On tap, poured into a snifter. The aroma is sweet grapefruit with a light, but noticeable herb spice. It pours clear amber orange with white soft soap head that leaves a wispy surface and a moderate light ring. The taste is a balanced medium high bittersweet. The texture is oily with a soft, fizzy carbonation and a medium full body flavored with citrus, grains, and herbs. It's finish is crisp with a citrus swell and a waxy and bready touch. It's also a bit soapy and grassy in feel and leads to an aftertaste that's lightly bitter and waxy with a flavor of toasted bread.

A fine offering from Half Acre. Pours a hazy golden/yellow hued with a generous head. Citrus and tropical notes on the nose. Heavy hop profile - the citra hops shine here with a dankness and bitterness really coming together in perfect union. Assertive malt backbone makes this an uncompromising IPA from Half Acre. Top notch.

Pours a golden yellow with big pillowy white head. Nice lacing. Smell is clean with mellow hops, lemon, with sweeter hard candy notes. Taste a mellow citus, bready, light melon rind, banana towards the end (guessing torrified wheat mixed in), with little bitter residual. Body is light and easy going, perfect for summer. This has to be the most interesting Half Acre ale I've tried as you try to dissect the different eliminates. Super clean and refreshing overall.

On-tap at Timothy O'Toole's, Chicago:

Pours deep golden with a lasting thin head. Trailing lace sticks.

The smell is of citrus and tropical fruits. Robust.

The taste is of big bitter citrus with a firm malt backbone. Spicy, long finish.

Alcohol well-integrated. Great texture.

A wonderful hop-filled delight!

Lovely looking pale brew, topped by a lively white head. Aroma promises plenty of juicy, citrusy hops, along with a hint of dank herbs.

Flavor follows, with a Citra-forward profile that provides plenty of juice and a nice level of bitterness. Pale malts provide a clean, slightly sweet, bready backbone.

Feel falls a touch short, at times feeling syrupy and flat (not uncarbonated; just lacking).

This is a solid IPA, and definitely worth seeking out for Citra fans.
