No formal review on this one, because I drank it last night. It's not a bad beer at all, I just think the barrel-aging somehow eliminated the complexity and character that makes the regular version so good and interesting. This tasted like a straight up American Barleywine to me. Meh.

Picked this up at the brewer a few weeks ago. Been meaning to try it but just hasn't gotten to the table. Good time for it, cool night that is finally warming after a lot of snow, Bruins game on, almost winter solstice, etc. Well then again it's always a good time for a bourbon barrel barleywine!

Pours a decent creamy foamy 1/2 finger head that fades at a med pace with nice lacing, not too bad at all for a 10% beer, very dark murky mahogany molasses brown color with hints of light barely sneaking through the thin parts.

Nose just explodes with bourbon, as a big bourbon drinker too this is awesome for bourbon nose! Bourbon then into sweet candy aromas, caramel, toffee, little nutty even, sweet candy and candied caramels, almost like bourbon candies, and a little vanilla barrel character, little brown sugar, and hints of candied dark fruits like raisin almost.

Taste starts with more bourbon, right off the bat again, a sweet candy bourbon with more vanilla barrel rounding flavors, pretty nice to start. A big warming tingly booze cuts in quickly as well and lets you know it's there, but not out of place for a 10% beer then barrel aging. Sweet malts behind that, with more caramel, brown sugar, toffee, little nutty character and juicy malt, more bourbon toffee candies and mild fluffy toasty reddish malt. Then hops, plenty of hops behind all that, more as it warms and more as i swish it around my mouth, earthy spicy hops that get quite bitter and chewy. As it moves towards the finish the booze really starts to get hot and the hops really start to get spicy and chewy, very bitter finish like I just bit into hop pellets, chewed them, then swished some bourbon around my mouth to wash them out, hot bourbon barrel flavors lingering with very little sweet malt left.

Mouth is fuller bod, little fluffy, nice carb, plenty of tingly warming hot booze.

Overall pretty nice, very good nose, flavor starts awesome, but finishes not so much, the hot booze flavor almost fusel, and super bitter almost astringent chewy spicy hops really just linger forever and destroy all of what was left from the great candy malts and bourbon flavors. So it's unfortunately for that finish or this would be a big winner.

Extremely hot with the nose of rubbing alcohol and sun tan lotion. Taste is of mouthwash.

A- Pours a dark amber pretty much brown hue to three pint glasses. Creamy and frothy off-white head to two fingers with good retention. Never quite falls but stays at a frothy pillow leaving nice webs of lace.

S- Peppery Bourbon whiskey and oak at the top but not domination by any means. Nice caramel and hoppy Barleywine shines through and compliments the oak barrel nicely. Slight vanilla.

T- Oak flavor really opens up here and brings pretty much juiced oak tree onto the palate, not really toasted but huge woody. The peppery whiskey comes next with solid Bourbon flavors but eventually gets a bit too Bourbon. Barleywine base brings some nice caramel and a fair amount of hops in the finish.

MF- Body is right around the moderately thick range and has a medium level of carbonation. Texture of the body is slightly creamy and somewhat foamy. Finishes with a decent amount of alcohol heat.

Bourbon and OAK end up being pretty damn strong. The whiskey flavor is nice though even if it is a bit strong. Mostly barrel but some decent base beer in there.

22 oz bottle, the date notches don't make sense. Maybe August of 2014?

Muddy brown in color, only a thin head. Nice whiskey aroma, a bit of caramel and vanilla. Similar taste. Lingering aftertaste. Medium bodied, lower carbonation.

Thanks to jmgrub for sharing this one at Oneinchaway's tasting.

Pours a murky honey brown with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, bourbon, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, toffee, citrus zest, vanilla, and bourbon flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is surprisingly hoppy along with the sugary bourbon barrel characteristics.

Serving type: bottle.

Picked up at the brewery and poured into a Duvel tulip.

A - Poured a wonderful reddish mahogany hue with a nice one finger off white tan head that fades to leave light creamy lacing and a thin blanket.

S - Wow, okay. Rich bourbon, caramel, toffee, vanilla, faint alcohol. The hops and IBU have been knocked down some by the bourbon barrel aging. I believe it was 3 months in barrels. Sweet malts, toffee, vanilla. Really well done!

T - Taste is really nice here. TONS of rich bourbon, vanilla, light soft barrel, caramel, malty sweetness. Really bourbon heavy here, and while it is still on the hot side, flavour wise it is just delicious.

M - The heat though hurts this one now. Still too hot and a bit too boozy. It is rich, smooth, just hot. With time, this is gonna be awesome.

O - So they took an already horribly under appreciated barleywine, and aged it in...I think Woodford Reserve barrels (its on the sign, meant to make a note of it). Not like these guys used some cheap plastic handle. So, so much rich, smooth bourbon here. With some age this is going to be awesome. With two in the cellar I need to get more of this beer. In a year this is going to be magic.

High alcohol taste and smell. I get a bit vegetable taste with hops. Probably want to sit on this for a few years.
