bottle shared with a friend he recieved in a trade, not imported into the US!!! New country also. Also 350th review.
deep amber color capped by an off white head with ok retention. reduces to a small cap. Bready doughy nose. Palate is complex with caramel, toffee, light hint of roasty coffee. light to medium bodied. Another treat from my buddy brewky.

This is a sad example of a dark brew from Slovakia. The color itself would be nicely opaque, but that's about it. The head is not very firm and looses consistency quick, the smell is some odd mixture of gasoline and plum-pudding and the taste just get's even worse ... bitter-sour-sweet would be the proper term, frankly I couldn't make up the various flavors within it.
Certainly, nothing to be proud of ....

Dark bronze-like brown that becomes deep crimson with sunlight behind it. The golden beige cap is attractive as well. It's several fingers in height with an airy frothiness that manages to maintain its structure for a good, long while. It's a damn shame that very little lace finds its way to the glass.
Urpin Dark doesn't smell anything like dark beer. I realize that it's unfair to expect a Euro dark lager to smell like a porter, but there should at least be something present in the nose that distinguishes it from the pale styles. It smells like a weak English pale ale and is pleasant enough... if the intended style is ignored.
This is good beer that has just the right amount of lightly roasted maltiness. Flavors of cocoa, caramelized sugar and dark fruit make up the lion's share of the flavor profile. Hops make a noticeable contribution as well, although which varieties I couldn't begin to guess.
Sweet and bitter are present in roughly equal proportions and are complementary rather than combative. The flavor structure holds up well throughout the medium length finish, reminding me of just how well-crafted this lager is. The mouthfeel is medium (stylistically speaking) with a calm, refined character.
After dozens upon dozens of subpar Euro pale lagers and a few less than stellar Euro dark lagers, I wasn't overly optimistic about Urpin Dark. There are four medals on the label, one each from what I presume were beer competitions in England, France, Italy and Germany. I may have scoffed at that notion prior to cracking the crown, but certainly not after.

This was a gem in a non-descript bottle, from which I really expected very little.
The liquid is an almost fathomless brown, ruby hued beer topped with a puffy, rocky head. Bread-like smells rise from the glass...a mix of grains, roast barley, malts and yeast. The taste is doughy, toasted, and very sweet. At times it seemed almost bock-like. It's very lightly hopped, and the finish is sweet and very smooth. It's always nice to be surprised!
