Bottle to snifter

From notes. I opened this bottle at bspringer's birthday celebration. An epic night for sure to celebrate his golden day of birth! Compared side-by-side to Double Rainbow Ale from Iron Horse Brewery.

A: Golden tan. Single (white) fingernail head on medium pour.

S: Simply put, a hot mess. All over the place here. There sure are 14 different flavors coming off the nose, but I can only pick up a few - weird spice, charred malt, yeast, and green pepper, and honey.

T: All over the place and quite complex. First, roasted pumpkin seed, grass, and brown sugar. Second, zest of lemon, oat, and white pepper. Third, blue corn tortilla chips, plum, and burnt malt. Finally, apricot and olive. Blah!

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: I enjoy the YouTube video, but not this beer. Way too much happening here and none of it is enjoyable. To meshed together and blah. A valiant effort to replicate the "double rainbow" experience, but I will surely try to forget this one.

Thanks to mday for sharing some of this at DLD 2011. Thanks, Mike! Served in a SAVOR snifter.

Pours a nice pinkish-red color with a nice white head and some good lacing as it goes down. The nose is really quite sweet with some funky fruits and a bit of a floral character. A bit of acid. More acid, really. Nice and spicy with a fruit and herb dimension. Floral again. Really takes the range of characteristics. The flavor is no different. Certainly knocks down the flavor rainbow throughout. Nice spice and a strong fruit character. Really hard to believe this is a 14% beer. Pretty good body and carbonation. Highly enjoyable.

Judging by the other reviews, I wonder if there might be some bottle variation. Some rather extreme bottle variation.

Props to the man, TurdFurgeson who collaborated with Kermit the Frog in scoring this rarity and sharing it at the "It's Better than Opium" tasting at random Thai restaurant. Much credit is also due to MasterSki and his sponsorer YouTube, for setting the events in motion that brought this upon us.

A - Reddish brown beer with a little bit of haze that had a small white head. Small white ring left around the sides.

S - Horrible spice smell, I'm guessing this is the rose hips mentioned on the bottle, combined with the saffron. Why people insist on putting this into beers, or at least bottling it and subjecting poor tickers to it, is beyond me. A lot of medicinal alcohol smell coming up here. Disgusting.

T - Not sure whose idea this was, but the light bulb was flickering when they came up with it. $&#^ing horrible. It tastes like cough syrup. Scratch that, it tastes like $&#*ing bad cough syrup. I had a cold recently and the @#&%ing cough syrup I used tasted better. Bizzaro spice (vitamin-like if you dwell on it enough) and gross fruit syrup are a poor $&#*ing combination. This is a Saison? &*#@ that.

%&*@.

M - Syrupy, relatively large body on it, still not convinced it is a saison, but the mouthfeel at least is not a massive fail.

O - Yeah right, this was disgusting beyond belief. Had no clue it was 14%, I guess the hope is that it will get you drunk so fast you won't notice the taste. If this was a horse in the Kentucky Derby it would be the one that broke its leg and needs to be shot. Course, given I'm the one that drank it, apparently I should be put out of my misery.

Thanks(?) to Eric (TurdFurgison) for this one. I guess I should be more careful about what I wish for in the future. Served in a wine glass.

A - Quick-dissolving dime of white foam that settles to a thin white ring. Semi-transparent reddish brown body.

S - Belgian yeast, fusel alcohol, pez, and a collection of spices that makes me think of Middle Eastern and East Indian cuisine - saffron, rose hips, and god knows what else. The ridiculous overspicing helps hide the ridiculous alcohol a little bit, but this smells like a Fantôme experiment gone horribly awry.

T - Taste is a little better, as the alcohol relents and the spice character becomes largely floral. Fruity pez and a vague pumpkin note are also present.

M - Smooth texture, medium-full body, medium-low carbonation. Not much burn, which was a pleasant surprise.

D - I didn't realize this was 14%, which explains the harsh nose. Still, I would have guessed 10-12% at most. The spices seem arbitrarily chosen and clash horribly a times. The closest comparison I can think of is some of the more bizarre batches of Fantôme but without the wild yeast or Dany's savant touch with spices. Might work really nice for cooking, but I'd be pretty happy if I never encountered this beer again.

Had this one from the bottle at Trinity Brewing in Colorado Springs. I only got to try this one thanks to the generosity of four Denver strangers (beer offer still stands). Poured a slightly hazy reddish color with a nice tan head. All kinds of craziness going on in this one, weird and interesting (but not necessarily in a bad way). Allegedly brewed with 12 ingredients representing the 6 colors of the rainbow. A unique and interesting beer.

750 ml bottle thanks to Urbancaver. Cant believe this bottle was not reviewed prior to him adding it.

A very nice ruby red/rose color. Mnimal lacing with a slight head and some bubbles floating around the top. I enjoyed the nose on this beer with hints of parsley, flowers and spices (bottle lists like 14 different spices and flavors). I enjoyed the black cheery and pumpkin taste. This double rainbow had a smooth finish and a good carbonation level. Very easy to drink almost dangerous at 14%.

Gusher!! But not that bad. Pours a pinkish red. A bit of white head. Smells Sweet and spicy. Lots of parsley on the nose and tongue. I can detect so much else going on on the nose. Amazingly drinkable. This is truly top notch brew!
