Notes: This style is a bottom fermented lager traditionally brewed in Northern Europe. We age our interpretation on Bourbon Barrels (American Oak), which imparts a certain dryness accompanied by rich toffee flavors!

Thanks BA smoked for gifting me with a bottle of this. Waxed 375ml poured into a tulip. The brew appears dark brown in color with a tan cap. When held to the light it has ruby clarity throughout.

The smell includes notes of citrus and some carbonic character. It is surprisingly very muted but as it warms, some bourbony tang emerges. Also a bit of a cola character to it.

The taste has plenty of oak but it feels neutral and has a spiciness to it almost like cinnamon. A faint rasion and roastiness as it warms up. Like the nose, it almost has a cola sort of feel to it.

This is medium to light bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. A strange brew that isnt bad, just very mild in character. I appreciate the chance to try this, it was very approachable.

The last beer from my horrible adventure in Colorado. Served from a thick bottle at probably too cold a temperature for the style.

Smells of light bourbon and some sour fruit. Nicely mellow but not really complicated enough for a Baltic porter.

Tastes more vinous than whiskey-y, with red wine fruits dominating the front end, oak and porter malts in the middle, and some cream, chocolate, and generic fruit in the back end. Nicely complex without ever getting stupid.

A Baltic Porter using lager yeast, aged on Chauchalalate wood.

I would say this is a "simple" beer, but it really isn't. From the appearance to the aroma, taste, feel and overall there is nothing that stands out. It's not overly complex. It has a nice 'drinkability' to it.

With that said, the subtleties is what makes this beer pretty darn good. Coffee, espresso, chocolate, caramel, vanilla, dates, leather and plum are blended quite nicely. Nothing really stands out, although the chocolate and espresso may take the honors. The wood is less woody and more earthy, if that makes sense. I think it adds a grassy-cocoa to the beer, and nice smoothness.
Hints of spice throughout--nutmeg, paradise, maybe cinnamon.

12.7 oz. Bottle
Red Wax/Capped

Poured into a chalice a pretty nice dark brown color, very nice carbonation, with a nice small creamy/fizzy light tan head, which leaves some oil slicks and sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, with some chocolate/toffee notes, slight bourbon, slight oak, slight vanilla. The taste is very nice malty, nice touch of chocolate/toffee, nice little touch of bourbon/oak, some vanilla. Medium body, ABV is hidden very well, nice little bitter/dry finish. Overall, I like this one, kinda on the milder side of BBA brews. Recommended.

On tap at Hops and Pie and served in a snifter. Dark black with zero head. Aroma is malts, dark fruit, porter. Flavor is nice, dark malts and the wood aging is apparent. Nice flavor, easy to drink and sort of complex with the wood aspects. Nice beer.

A: The beer is black when viewed from afar; upon closer inspection when held up to a bright light the edges of the glass are dark reddish brown in color. It poured with a quarter finger high beige colored head that died down, leaving wispy lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of bourbon are present in the nose.
T: The taste is nearly a mirror image to the smell, having moderate flavors of bourbon and hints of alcohol "bite" in the finish (the kind of "bite" you get when you drink straight bourbon).
M: It feels a bit more than medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The bourbon lends some warmth to the finish.
O: If you like bourbon barrel aged beers, it is a nice selection, and is rather easy to drink compared to other beers in the style given its low alcohol content. However, the bourbon flavors completely obscure any of the aromas or flavors of the underlying beer.

375ml, red wax capped bottle. Yay! Not a sour, session ale, or saison! Am I actually looking forward to fall and winter? Maybe I am, maybe I am.

This beer pours a pretty solid black, with faint orange cola basal edges, and two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly brown head, which leaves some decent roiling wavecrest lace around the glass as it quickly subsides.

It smells of bittersweet chocolate, gritty roasted caramel malt, a complex sweet nuttiness, vanilla-forward Bourbon barrel wood, further free-agent ash, faint black coffee, and perhaps a notion of citrusy and piney hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, medium cocoa powder, cafe-au-lait, more delicately indulgent nuts, an emerging black orchard fruitiness, ethereal vanillan whiskey barrel staves, some hard to pin down earthy spice, and a weak, but welcome all the same, grassy and citrusy hoppiness.

The carbonation is quite active in its palate tingling and otherwise supportive frothiness, the body a so-so middleweight, and more or less smooth, just a bit of char taking a chink out of the armor here. It finishes off-dry, as the now almost sour coffee-laced milky character starts to compete with the lingering chocolate and caramel notes.

Overall, this is one of the better iterations of the style that I have come across, nice and robust, and easy to drink. I wouldn't go and put it up against the LTM Grande Cuvée Porter Baltique (mostly due to home field advantage), but Chilly Water is a damned fine brew, with a tongue in cheek moniker that I am just now starting to appreciate.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown with only a little light transmission around the top of the glass and a thick brown filmy head with light lacing. Aroma of sweet dark toasted malt, dark stone fruit, bourbon with hints of oak. Flavor is a mellow mixture of dark malt, milk chocolate, bourbon with mild fresh and dried dark stone fruit. Finish is dark malt, light bourbon, slightly boozy. Medium bodied with light creaminess, nice mouth feel. Hits all the notes expected from a Baltic porter, with nice lightly toasted malt and light fruit notes. Bourbon is noticeable but not forward. Extremely well balanced and integrated. I liked this a lot. I would like to try more from this brewery, but they mostly make wild/sour ales, which are not to my taste. I've greatly enjoyed their porter and stout and hope to run across other non-sour styles to try.

Black body with a thick and creamy, light tan head; good lacing clinging to the glass. Gently roasted grain nose; dark chocolate; cocoa; malted milk balls; caramel. Big toffee flavor with a tangy/sour hint (from the oak-aged bourbon barrels?); chocolate; sour cherries. Medium-heavy body; smooth; creamy; semi-dry finish.

A big and bold beer with a certain hard-to-describe deftness towards creating a satisfying taste and feel. Excellent job in bringing flavor forward while taming the ABV.
