The generous addition of hops both during and at the end of the fermentation process (dry-hopping) gives our India Pale Ale its characteristic bitterness and piney citrus aroma and flavor. Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Slightly cloud golden yellow with a small short lived head but good lacing. Subdued floral smell. The taste is fruity and a bit grassy. Not bad, but probably not something to buy on a regular basis.

The beer looks decent enough (actually I don't rate much of anything over 4.0) but this beer lacks in every sense . . .

Appearance = below average

Look-3.25- dark straw color with good clarity, but a little haze. Nice one finger white head, didn't last too long but left lots of lacing
Smell- 3- not weak but not quite a strong hop aroma, cascade really shines through the pale malt smell. Citrus, floral, spicy hop aroma, bready malt smell is well balanced. Could use more hop aroma.
Taste- 3.5- mild amount of hop flavor all the way through the palate, pine flavor dominates with notes of citrus and floral. Lingering bitterness is accompanied by a slight alcohol warmth that gradually imposes on the balance of bitterness.
Feel- 3- mouthfeel was a little thin for an IPA of 6.2%, carbonation was just right, medium to medium low.
Overall- 3.25 - body could have been better, great pine hop flavor, aroma lacking on the hops a little, but I would buy a second pint in warmer weather.

One of my first rules for any beer is that it must at least stand for something and not just blandly sit there. Well, at least Long Hammer fulfills that part. But while the beer has a distinct taste, I don't know if that taste is very good. There is a definite hop edge here, but what follows is not quite there. Maybe it lacks a malt balance or something, I don't know. Still, this isn't a bad beer. Unlike my experience with Goose Island IPA, I'm not having to search for a flavor beneath the hops.

Don't understand why there isn't more love for this perfectly acceptable, accessible IPA.
L: Yellow-gold, looks nice but that's not why you're here. Reasonably long-lasting head but not overly foamy.
S: Way less intense than many IPAs but plenty of hops if you want to find them. More malt aroma than some IPAs.
T: Light for an IPA and very drinkable. Nice summer brew but also pairs well with food. Does not overwhelm.
O: A very light touch for an IPA. Pairs very well with spicy food (had it with both Indian and Thai). With powerful IPAs like Torpedo I don't even think about food - one or the other would suffer. Not with the Redhook. It may not be special, but it's very drinkable.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 7/24/2015. Pours crystal clear deep golden/light orange color with a 1-2 finger dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper, pine, honey, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/earthy hops and moderate bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper, pine, honey, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine/grassy/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pepper, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/earthy hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/grainy/sticky, and slightly resinous balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6.2%. Overall this is a nice IPA. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/earthy hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and refreshing to drink for the style. Would be a good entry level IPA. Not too bitter; but still has nice hop complexity, with a bit more malt presence. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Pours yellow, very clear with a nice white foam head, good retention. Aroma is hoppy and malty. Taste is mild, medium bitterness, very drinkable beer in the low stats of an IPA. Price is excellent. Cheers

I don't think this is the same beer as Ballard's Bitter/IPA. Good clarity, golden in color and drapes a solid 4/5" white head. Dat boi good. Aroma is nice, there is a minor amount of soft dry hopping.

Taste is underhopped by current standards, there's hops, there's bitterness but they lay in the soft 40-50ibu range. The malt takes on some of that beechwood + barley tones. Its not heavy but some of those strange malt tones definitely compete and bring this one dangerously close to being balanced.

Somewhere between your standard mass produced lager, they decided to switch it up, drop in some ale yeast and moar hops. Its a neat gateway ipa.
