Redhook Ale Brewery

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The generous addition of hops both during and at the end of the fermentation process (dry-hopping) gives our India Pale Ale its characteristic bitterness and piney citrus aroma and flavor. The medium body, crisp finish, and moderate alcohol and IBU levels makes this one of America’s most drinkable and best-selling IPAs.

I love all of this brewery's stuff. Visited the Seattle brewery in the dawning days of the craft brew revolution. It was a fun and tasty experience. I like the ESB they make the best.

This really isn't an IPA in my opinion. It has very little bitterness or hops and has more of a sweeter crisp flavor. It's definitely drinkable and quite refreshing actually, but far from an IPA.

The IPA that i did not truly enjoy. I first found this because one of my girl friends said there were no IPAs at the market, so i went my self and found this one.

Lacks the gourmet perfection of many of the contemporary craft beers (think Ballast Point Sculpin IPA), yet nonetheless, a decent session IPA for the price and not as lackluster as generally reviewed here at BA.

Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Dec 12, 2016.

Bright white and shiny beaming head, two fingers and slightly soapy with scattered lacing and good coating. Body color beams nicely a simple but bright tangerine orange body, clear and shiny with slow streams of linear carbonation. Nice looking.

For an IPA this is extremely closed. Neutral sensing malt, and maybe a touch of florals? But really reaching here, neutral and shutdown. Perhaps a faint caramel touch but that's really reaching.

Palate unfortunately continues the same theme. Light bodied almost session in character, with no malt flavor. Neutral and meaningless or distinct hop flavor in the mid palate. Slightly sugary malt bill on the finish that's very papery and white flour tasting.

Overall even for a regular beer there isn't much being delivered here, in fact it hardly has any bitterness at all strangely. Seems like an IPA whose time has long since past, but is drinkable without any faults.

(11/27/16, 220z, Long Beach) First time in almost 10 years trying this (w/ not favorable memories) and it is not any better this time around. However, I recall it being more bitter. I came off a bit "bready" like a common pilsner. Would've rated a bit higher if not under this classification. As a lager this would be a decent beer, 2.75

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Slightly cloud golden yellow with a small short lived head but good lacing. Subdued floral smell. The taste is fruity and a bit grassy. Not bad, but probably not something to buy on a regular basis.

The beer looks decent enough (actually I don't rate much of anything over 4.0) but this beer lacks in every sense . . .

Appearance = below average
Smell = malty and outdated
Taste = malty and outdated
Feel = below average
Overall = drinkable

Tick.
