Notes: Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter is dark chestnut brown in color and is made with pureed pumpkin. Cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger are added to the whirlpool and maple syrup is added during fermentation. This full-bodied, rich roasty porter makes you want to eat turkey and watch football, or build a bonfire.

Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint glass.

L: Very dark, as a porter should be. Very little head. Nice, faint tan lacing at the edges that remained throughout.

S: This was the only disappointment for me. Very little aroma--a hint of spice and, of course, pumpkin.

T: Smooth and creamy; chocolate, coffee, nutmeg, and pumpkin (duh). Incredible flavor with little lingering aftertaste.

F: Sits nicely on the palate--lighter than most porters--very pleasant. Folks who don't typically like porters would probably enjoy this.

O: In the interest of full disclosure, I'm a big fan of Red Hook, and I think they do many things very well. That said, this is a good beer, a little better than some of the reviews might suggest.

We have enough pumpkins ales. A pumpkin porter just makes sense.

It is New Beer Sunday (Week 571) & having been inspired by a Doctor Who marathon of my own devising, I have traveled back in time to the fall. As such, I am CANcentrating on CANned Pumpkin Ales, but I am taking a short detour with a bottle (or two).

From the bottle: "Seasonal Series"; "A dark Ale brewed with Pumpkin, Spices and Maple Syrup"; "Est. 1981 Seattle".

I Pop!ped the cap off and showed amazing restraint in my pour given that I was VERY excited by the shape of the bottle. The stubby Belgian "grenade" bottles can be daunting when fashioning a Molotov cocktail, but this baby would be perfect! A swirl raised a finger of foamy, light-tan head with limited retention that quickly fell back to wisps. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44) with NE-quality clarity & mahogany highlights. Nose held a pronounced smokiness, perhaps from the maple syrup. If that is the case & it works, a smoked pumpkin ale may be just the thing! Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was slightly smoky, mildly spiced and all of a sudden, I tasted smoked ham! OMFG! This was great! Low on spice, big on smoke, I would want this every fall! Finish was dry, smoky, a real find!

Poured from a bottle into a mug, the beer is a very dark brown coloring with ruby highlights, and a thin, filmy, sparse, surface coating of light tan head. Aromas of heavily roasted pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, molasses, and caramel. Pretty rich nose, but subtle. Flavors are roasted and rich pumpkin forward, with a subtle spice blend to follow. Fairly sweet blend, but it disappears quickly, and leans more to a bitter roasted characteristic in the aftertaste. Sugary sweet, and cloying overall. Oily body. The finish is richly sweet, like pumpkin bread. This beer isn't bad, but it's a bit all over the place.

I wouldn't consider this a porter or a pumpkin beer. It's just a nice easy-drinking tasteful beer. subtle taste of pumpkin, some smoke, and the nice smooth porter characteristics. It's a little flat like a cask ale. all said I think it's a great fall beer. I will enjoy this much more in October.
