I'm so glad they brought this out of retirement.
Probably one of the best looking beers I've ever seen. Poured into a mug, it produces a big frothy head the color of a tea latte that lasts practically indefinitely, and a thick, mostly transparent amber body with a cherry red glow and mesmerizing streams of tiny bubbles throughout.
Huge herbal hop aromas mingle with rich, caramelly malty sweetness, giving impressions of dried plum, apricot and peach, followed by molasses and tamarind. And malt barley: tons of it.
Tastes exactly like it should. Like a pale ale on a lot of steroids. There's an extremely long evolution on the palate with this one. It starts out tasting like a pale and an amber had a baby that was obsessed with hops. Those hops then turn into dried stone fruit, then pine resin.
It starts out really rich and creamy feeling, but then that pine resin finish hits and it dries up like barrel proof whiskey in the hot sun.
Amazing beer. It kinda reminds me of Double Jack by Firestone Walker, which was probably the first DIPA I fell in love with. Please make more. I love you Lost Abbey. Prost!

March 17th, 2016 - Enjoyed over drinks with colleagues, I didn't have much time too take meticulous notes (and the bar is too busy for that anyway) but this is a gorgeous deep, dark brown brew with a good hoppy nose and a spicy disposition. And most notable on the flavor is how mild the hops are even though the menu bills this as a Double IPA. But still quite good and engaging, catching the palate's attention even in a place like this.

Unknown vintage; drank 12/11/14 @ Fischman's.
Dark orange hue.
Off-white head; a curtain of lace.
Pine, caramel & mild orange citrus nose.
Medium thick mouthfeel.
Scorched-earth hop bitterness in the flavor, with hints of honey & caramel trying (& mostly failing) to emerge.
This is everything I DON'T like in an IPA.

The appearance had a semi dark red sort of amber color. Bar pour leads to a one finger white foamy head that dies to leave some white cling lacing. The smell started off light caramel leading to bitter hops, nothing overly done and extremely inviting. The taste was a bittersweet all the way through to lead to a super nice bittersweet caramel bitter hops aftertaste, dry finish. On the palate, it sat at/about a medium in body, somewhat sessionable, and the carbonation is right on for the style and for me. Overall, I say this is a good AIPA that I would have again.

On tap at Eureka Restaurant in Concord, CA.
This tasted like a light hoppy barleywine. Woody & Cedary citrus hops. Almost like a low ABV aged SN Bigfoot. Nice change of pace but not at all what I was expecting when I ordered it off the menu.

Nice dark red look, cloudy. Scent of piney and citrus hops. Nice flavor, something different in this beer. Citrus and slightly bitter. Good carbonation. Good beer at the City Yap in University City. Evenly carbonated with the slight bitterness lasting on the palate.

Looks burnt orange with decent head. Smells of standard malts and bitter pine hops, and taste is same. Basically like a lower quality bigger Ballast Point a big Eye. Not bad, but not great by any stretch. Bitterness gets further out of proportion as beer warms.
