Very astringent and uncomfortable combination of hops and holiday spice

Bountiful lace (nearly a full blanket) from a minimal head. Dark amber color. A bit of haze.

I notice the alcohol first, not because it's strongest, but because I wasn't expecting it. Otherwise, I like the malt-hop balance. Pleasant aroma but not overly strong.

Thin malt start. The hop is very earthy-~not my favorite style, but well done. Long lingering aftertaste. Body is neutral; the carbonation elevated.

a well made ipa, but not the type that really excites me. i like the latest southern hemisphere hop craze, appreciate the fruitiness and tropical nature of it. i also like the old school west coast, resinous and sticky and big, even sweet at times. this is neither of those, and while it has some cool hop nuance (amarillo), this is a bitter bomb for me. its so intensely bitter as to not only destroy the palate for future beers, but also to crowd out any grain character, hop oil mouthfeel, and anything at all that would make it interesting or memorable. its obvious that the beer is of high quality, up to part for these guys for sure, but its so bitter that it doesnt have all that much flavor. im not usually one to complain about IBUs, in fact i look for them, yearn for them even, but this has been taken to absurdity. undrinkable in quantity i think, but its cool around the holidays as a conversation beer. i wouldnt buy a bottle of it though.

Sampled on tap aS a guest tap at Bagby Brewery in Oceanside. Light reddish brown beer with nice clarity. Thin pencil of head that stuck around a bit. Pine present in the nose but certainly not dominating. Brown bread, Carmel and white grape flavors initially. As this beer warmed up, a sweeter flavor, candied orange perhaps, opened up. Mouth feel is sparkly as this beer is highly carbonated and nice.

While not terrible, I just didn't think all the Christmas spices blended in all that well with the IPA base beer. One and done for me.
