unique brew here, one i have been wanting to try for a long time, stoked to have finally gotten the chance, clever fall recipe, but something i think that would have appeal year round, but i love this sort of thing. i think its way cool the base is a biere de garde, so autumnal already, really lends itself to the pumpkin and spices this is done with. its amber, close to clear, and has a short off white head on it with popping bubbles. its less funky than the nose than i expected it to be with some wild yeast elements in it, but its got a unique ferment anyway, one part belgian, one part rustic saison, light esters and spiciness playing up clove and nutmeg and citrus notes from the spice addition. i dont smell a lot of pumpkin but there could be a roasted squash sweetness here in with the grain. other notes include graham cracker, toffee, raisin, and anise. the flavor is a nice mix of all of this, again pretty light on the actual pumpkin part, my guess is fermented down most of the way, this is pretty dry overall as the style goes too, not as malty rich as some of these can be. i like the slow warming this takes on, allspice and cinnamon, clove and orange peel, really i can taste it all, and the malt base is just enough to keep this balanced, some neat belgian esters rising up more and more as the temperature comes up too. nutty, only lightly sweet, sort of cakey without being desserty, and overall really distinctive, even if more brett would add a cool wrinkle. i love the base beer, think the additions for fall are clever, and would happily drink this all season long. lost abbey is still one of my favorites, and this is definitely underrated!

Pours a ruddy brownish copper with a finger of beige head. The nose has some seasonal spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg; nothing is overdone.
The spices pick up a bit in the flavor. In addition, there is a very very slight sweetness followed by a long dry finish. The mouthfeel is grainy.
This is pumpkin ale for adults who don't like pumpkin ale.

Draft to tulip
Not as good as their standard offering. I did appreciate the attempt, a nice change of pace. Nice seasonal spices in the finish. Go for the standard Avante Garde.
