Pours a hazy mustard with little floaties. Head dissipates quickly.

Funk. Definitely barnyard, horse blanket, oak, lemon peel, sour notes. Lost Abbey always been good at capturing that signature Belgian funk.

Mellow. Needs time or more barrels or bacteria to give it a kick. Sourness is medium to medium low. The flavor isn't bad, good as a base beer to add fruit. No off flavors but again just a good base. Finish is clean.

Light bodied. The strong carbonation works with the sourness to keep the mouthfeel interesting. When on the tongue it's a very lively beer, however any needed interplay of sweetness, more complexity or finish is lacking.

I would say this is the perfect benchmark for a good sour. It's not going to knock your socks off.

Ghosts in the Forest pours a hazy golden color, with a very small, but lacing head. Oakey aroma, with hints of white wine. Flavor is sour, but not too sour, with dry fruits, and a crisp white wine finish; hint of sweetness. Good body and feel. Overall, a strong sour ale, not to overpowering, with a flavor like a white wine.

brilliant clarity on this new wild ale from lost abbey, i usually expect a little cloudiness from beer that has been rested in wood, but here were have an immaculately clear golden and radiant specimen, rising pure white head on it too, looks like a well refined belgian blonde to me. the aroma is very sour, but fruity too, lemons and mandarins and white grapes and nectarines, even blueberries for some reason, but it definitely appears to me that the bacteria has gotten way out in front of the brett in this foeder, and this is far more acidic and sour than it is wild or funky in that sense, and i was half expecting and half hoping for the opposite. the flavor confirms that, very acidic, but fully flavorful with some white vinegar, white wine, and lemon acidity, citric and lactic more than anything else, but with a lot of oak on it to smooth the edges, it tastes both young and bright but also earthy and mature at the same time, a neat back and forth, but far less complex overall than i thought it might be. there is some bretty funk to this, but it says sour belgian to me far more than ambient saison. great fruitiness though, peach and plum and green grapes, refreshing in that sense, and very well carbonated too. in the end though, i wanted a little more from this one, my expectations always soar with these guys, and this ends up a bit more sour than it needs to be, still very good, but id like it better more relaxed on that front...

Poured from a cork'n'cage 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass

L: Nearly clear light golden pour. Thin white head falls fast... solid ring of lacing.

S: Oak and over-ripened fruit... grape must, green apple, and white wine.

T/F: Complex, tart, and fruity. Over-ripened stone fruits.... green apple and pear, minimal funk, and strong oak character. The barrel aging really works here. Medium to light in body... decent carbonation. Finish is tart and sticky with late summer fruit.

O: Fantastic wild ale. Tart and fruity without being an all-out face pucker. Drinkable and delicious. A worthy release from Lost Abbey.

Bottle.

A: Lemon, followed by stone fruit, light funk, lots of white wine character.

A: Golden color, totally clear, with a thin white uniform head with adequate retention.

T: Stone fruit, particularly pear followed by moderate funkiness, vinous flavors, followed by a clean moderate lingering sourness.

M: Medium bodied with light carbonation, faint but pleasing acidity.

O: Solid; the beer shows a lot of depth and complexity, very clean and easy to drink. The beer would work well as a base for future Veritas.
