Notes: Blended dark strong ale with sour cherries aged in American oak and French oak red wine barrels.

Once upon a time it was the most award winning Pizza Port beer of all time. Now it has found a new home at The Lost Abbey.

A massive brown ale base that is made from four fermentable sugars including malted barley, raisins, candi sugar and sour cherries, this beer is fully-fermented before being placed in bourbon barrels where the beer ages for one year with the sour cherries and the wild Brettanomyces yeast that we inoculate the barrels.

taste- tart fruit, sour flavors

color- chestnut

clarity- clear

smell- vanilla, funk, cherries, wine barrel, alcohol

body- medium weight, lean mouthfeel, medium length finish, hop bite at the front of the tongue, sour flavors on the side of the tongue

appearance- flat, very thin off-white carbonation ring around the glass with very little lacing

overall impression- glad i tried it but don't think i'd seek it out again for $34

Pours a murky dark brown color with no head. An oily film develops on the top of the beer and there is some floating sediment that sinks to the bottom of the glass. There is no lacing whatsoever. Smells of vinegar, sour cherries, and funk/must. Taste is of sour cherries, malt vinegar, wood, and funk/must. There is an alcohol presence in the throat after each sip. There is no carbonation on this beer. Extremely flat and somewhat drying in the mouth. Overall, this is a nice smelling and tasting beer but the appearance and mouthfeel kill it for me. This would be awesome if the carbonation issue were fixed. Disappointing for the $15.99 I paid for the small bottle.

Ruby-tinted black with a very thin light tan head.

Sour grapes, cherry, vinegar and soy in the nose.

Nice sour, cherry flavor. Raisin, too. Mild earthy, pilly bitterness in aftertaste.

Creamy, very well carbonated feel. Nice fizziness to it.

A nice and fruity, creamy sour. Not unlike Alexander, although not quite at that level.

A: Pours a chocolaty brown with auburn highlights with a bit of opacity to it. Ruddy and unfiltered…just the way I like my beers. Head is simple and thin leaving a small pool of foam on top of the body and a decent ring of whipped butter colored bubbles around the sides.

S: YOWZA! Peach yogurt, oak, cherries, blackstrap molasses, butterscotch, salt water taffy with a touch of cherry vanilla coke. Mighty fine smellin’ beer I reckon.

T: The first sip is pretty much an overwhelming experience. I’m not going to try to explain what’s going on in my mouth…I’m going to give my tongue a minute of “quiet time” to regroup and regain my thoughts.

OK, here we go. Begins with prickly sourness way along the lines of bing cherries, watermelon rind, under ripe blueberries and fresh ground black pepper. The brett is strong in this beer with flagrant peach yogurt tastes being thrown around with reckless abandon. Pungent oak is prevalent adding a precise bitterness that only oak can add. A strong underlying current of pureed raisins blended with toffee, coffee candy and delicately roasted grains creates the foundation in which all the other flavors can frolic. Finishes with peach propped up with vanilla, orange marmalade across the roof of the mouth then *POW*…the sourness hits…and boy is it sour. Like somebody ground up a vitamin C into the beer and put it on time release for 8 seconds after the swallow. Only a touch of syrup and cloying tastes afterwards but the bitterness really helps to balance this out.

M: Full, soft and silky

D: Scrumptious. I try not to use that word. Sounds a bit “flamboyant” and pretentious if you ask me. But in this case…I can’t help myself.

750 mL bottle poured into a goblet. Thanks to Ynot2 for this bottle.

Appearance - Deep murky reddish brown body. An aggressive pour yields a good size head, which I suppose I should be grateful for, considering the Lost Abbey reputation.

Smell - Mostly cherries. Tart and a bit of funk to start. Behind the initial tartness is a nice vanilla and slight bourbon flavor. I probably only taste the bourbon since it said bourbon on the label, though. What I do like is how the tartness returns in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Nice carbonation, surprise! I kinda don't like how dry it is in the finish, but such is the loss of drinking sours.

Overall - Delicious beer. I would like more of the original quad to come through, but as a sour it is near perfection.

2009 vintage, 12.7 oz. cage-corked bottle pours into a wide-mouth glass, as per recommendation on the label.

Pours mahogany brown with ruby highlights. No real head, just a wisp. "Legs" stick. A nice appearance color-wise.

The smell is of strong vinous and oak/vanilla notes with raisins and sour cherries.

The taste is of sour/tart cherries, raisins and vanilla/oak. Sweet and sour. There is a red-wine-ish character but with funk and sour cherries mixed in. Quite complex. Finishes very, very dry.

It has a creamy medium body that leaves a pucker.

Alcohol well-covered, helping it to drink well. An interesting brew that is unique and creative. Quite a bit going on here. Sour/funky, sweet with a very dry finish.

Perfectly paired with some Moser-Roth dark chocolate. Poured into a duvel tulip glass. Nice and fizzy.

Very sour; gleeky. Intensely, bracingly tart. Sweet tart, sour-patch kid tart, but not vinegary. Like the pickled plums found in some sushi.

Loads and loads of dark fruits: sour black cherries, extremely rich, sticky sour cherry pie. Mouthfillingly complex. No roast or coffee sharpness. I didn't pick up much horsey funkiness, but there are some dark currents like tobacco or leather.

Comparatively dry, clean aftertaste with a bit of lingering sour cherry. Sort of a reproduction of a 19th century, extremely old vintage infected strong ale. Sets a new standard.

2013 bottle

Ap - Murky, ugly, flat, with all that is going on, it's expected. However, it's still ugly.

Ar - Cherry, orange, honey, sour(!!!) cherries, in that order.

T - Bourbon, red wine, and honey. A hint of sour cherries at the end.

M - Medium bodied, and dry. Very similar to a Cabernet.

O - Different, confusing, awesome. It's very complex and you get all the advertised flavors and nuances. I want to try this with a few years on it.

Oak and red wine as well as some bourbon notes. Dark amber in color with a large fluffy head. Sour fore that tastes like a stab at bourbon vinegar. There is a whole basket full of fruits making appearances here, but the acidic sourness dominates the flavor profile. The overall feel is smooth though and it is a beer that compels you to keep sipping.
