Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Once upon a time it was the most award winning Pizza Port beer of all time. Now it has found a new home at The Lost Abbey.

A massive brown ale base that is made from four fermentable sugars including Malted Barley, Raisins, Candi Sugar and Sour Cherries, this beer is fully fermented before being placed in Bourbon barrels where the beer ages for one year with the Sour Cherries and the wild Brettanomyces yeast that we inoculate the barrels with.

Appearance - The beer seems to be a deep amber color with little visible carbonation.

Smell - The nose is sour with a pleasant oakiness.

Taste - I am impressed with an overall sour profile. The cherry is sour but has a background of sweetness from candy sugar. The oak gives a dry impression that continues to the end. I also get a little of cinnamon. The cherries matured nicely in this one.

Mouthfeel - Though it seems thin, the oak gives an impression of stickiness.

Overall - This is great. Seek it.

On-tap at Chuck's Greenwood in Seattle. Tasted 3 June 2016.

Pours a deep, murky brown. More head than the glass would take, decent retention, some lacing. Fine.

Smell is a lovely mix of potent sweet malty stuff, cherries, sharp acidic sour. Really nice.

Taste is like an unbalanced version of the smell. The fruit comes through, but all the subtlety is blasted out of the way by the sour, which is a little more acrid than I'd like.

Feel is good. Fairly heavy, but well carbonated to keep things moving. Feels like a sour, with that prickly lightness dominating any residual malty sludge I thought I might get based on the appearance.

A decent sour. The taste is chaotic, and I lose things I'd like to be able to taste.
