Style: Quadrupel (Quad)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.50%

Notes / Commercial Description:
A massive beer in every sense of the word. A stronger and more contemplative version of our Lost and Found Ale. Judgment Day is the base beer for our Cuvee de Tomme. Many of the Trappist Breweries produce a version of beer which ages incredibly well for many years to come. And, since none of us knows when the end of the world is coming, we suggest you stock up with lots of Lost Abbey beers so that when the end of the world magically appears from no where, you’ll have a beer or two on hand for even the stingiest of angels.

this is a style of beer i love, and have been drinking like crazy lately, and this is a wonderful example of it. rich and chewy layered malty quad, loaded with raisins. the abv is sneaky strong, this is barely warming let alone boozy, it can sneak up on you quick. it smells and tastes more malty than yeasty, with a fruitcake sort of breadiness and the raisins, really nice back and forth there, notes of bran muffin, spice cake, and toffee are here. its got an earthiness in its concentrated sweetness too, and a spiced rum-like flavor element as well, a brick oven bready heartiness too. its rich and full bodied, but not as heavy as a lot of these, and its fairly carbonated which i love. i did not have the carbonation issues others have reported. the belgian yeast aspect is great with the raisins, and seems to amplify a dark candy syrup flavor too. subtle clove and rootbeer notes, lots happening. we unintentionally found ourselves drinking this one when a slow smoked pork came off the grill, and this stood up well to the heavy flavors of the meat. these guys are awesome, and i think we forget sometimes that beer like this is available to us every day at a reasonable price. i need to revisit some other lost abbey beers again, this surprised me for some reason in its overall quality. good use of the raisins, great beer overall!

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a goblet glass.

Look - Fantastic, hands down. A very dark brown, basically stout-like in appearance, that lets little light through. It has nice khaki head that holds to a 1/2 finger for the first few minutes but subsides to a solid ring and light lacing fairly quickly.

Smell - Fruity and musty, with a rich caramel and molasses malt presence. Incredibly rich and sweet, strong presence of the added raisins which is improved greatly by the earthy, outdoor musk that accompanies their flavor.

Taste - Incredibly rich raisin and plum flavors, strong caramel and molasses, but most interestingly all balanced against a rich dark, bitter chocolate flavor. Sweet, nutty (almonds and hazelnuts), fruity, and earthy, while also quite chocolaty and with a strong, boozy warmth that doesn't disturb the flavors. Delicious.

Feel - Smooth, with light spicy/earthy hops, followed by sweet and light caramel and molasses flavors, with chocolate mixed in. Incredibly rich and full flavors on the initial sip, which thin out and lighten as soon as you swallow. Not a ton of linger, which makes this beer somewhat refreshing as well, despite its heaviness and richness.

Overall - A pretty amazing and delicious quad, with unique elements thrown in (raisins, dark chocolate) to augment the solid base flavors. Well worth the buy.

The appearance was a dark brown color with a one finger white foamy sustaining head. Light lacing stuck around the glass. The smell had a nice sweet to spicy blend of dark fruits ( raisins, plums), slightly currants undertone. The taste blended sweet to spice. It definitely has the throaty dark fruity aftertaste leading to a semi-dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sipping quality about it. The carbonation was there and good. Overall, this was a pretty good Quad I could have again.

The beer is a dark brown and has a white foamy head. I get a huge aroma of raisins and dark fruits. There is a lot of sweetness to this beer There is also a hint of spices in their, those sometimes associated with holiday beers. The beer tastes like it smells, lots of dark fruit notes and sweetness then it moves into a more bitter and dry flavor to round it out. I really dont know how to describe this beer it feels like a Quad mated with a Holiday beer and had a baby. The beer has a nice carbonation and a warmth of alcohol to it.

This beer is crazy smoky. Like, smoked meat on the nose, and in the very end of the flavor. Almost smells like a Schwarzbier. Mouthfeel is divine. Super smooth and silky. Good, but it would be difficult to drink more than 6-8 ounces.

LOOK: brown, dark ruby
SMELL: sharp raisins, sweet dark fruit, yeasty breadiness
TASTE: typical belgian quad - sweet dark fruits topped off with raisin. You get the belgian yeast and some alcohol as well. Very slight hints of burnt sugar as it warms.
FEEL: not quite chewy, but definitely a bold-medium mouthfeel if that makes sense.
OVERALL: Good beer, but nothing mind blowing. At the end of the day, it is a solid quad for a reasonable price. Not sure I will buy again, but glad I tired. Would be curious to try the BA version.

Poured into a chalice.
A - The beer is clear, dark reddish-brown with a small head that leaves lots of lacing on the glass.
S - The aroma is earthy and raisins.
T - Flavor is earthy with dark fruits. Not as sweet as expected. Somewhat bitter on finish.
M - Mouth feel average with medium carbonation.
O - I was disappointed in this one. A quad + raisins sounded fantastic but ultimately the beer did not deliver for me.
