Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent.

Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart.

The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

a - pours a reddish brown color, first pour is pretty clear, but the bottom has quite a bit of sediment, large ivory head with great retention and lacing

s - lots of tart and funkiness in the aroma, some vinegar and tart cherries, good amount of oak and notes of spice and cinnamon, beautiful aroma

t - intense tartness and sourness up front, sweetness of the malt and cherries fill out the body, finish has a little lingering funkiness but quite a bit of oak, brown sugar, honey, some cinnamon, the woodiness lingers for quire awhile, no alcohol evident

m - good amount of carbonation, medium-bodied, tartness on the finish is drying

d - the tartness definitely limits the drinkability here, after awhile, I'm sure it would wear out the palate, that said, I would love to have a few bottles of this to enjoy

Awesome beer overall. I wish I had several more bottles to enjoy, but alas, this is a rare one. The funkiness is not as in your face as many lambics and gueuzes, but there is a lot of complexity. Well worth seeking a bottle out if you can.

Poured into a snifter, and enjoyed it with a poached pear and apple cider and clove reduction food pairing. I waited in line for two hours to get it at the brewery in January.
A: Beuatiful ruby red. I'm sharing it with two others and I poured all the yeast into mine! No! Mine's cloudy and the others without the yeast are prettier. It has a thin lace, I would like more head.
S: Sourness, cinnamon, molasses
T: Paired well with the pears. Sourness with definite woody background. Definite cherry aftertaste. I'd like more fruit and less sourness please.
M: Very dry and bubbly
D: I'd like one more glass. I'm not feeling it at all. I wish I'd shared the bottle with only one other person! It's a small bottle for the price.

Beautiful bottle, definitely really classy. I love the image of the poppy on black with the heavy glass, and I love the name. I guess Poppies will always be associated with Flanders after the "Flanders Field" association. Pours a murky reddish/orange brown with a slight head, but what head there is surprisingly sticks around as a swirl of light foam for a very long time. Smells quite acetic, with some red fruit, a bit of leather, and a touch of funk right at the end. Taste is marvelous, and quite complex. Starts sour with a bit of spiciness and more red fruit and plum. It becomes more minerally, funkier, and woodier. The finish is both spicy and funky with flavors of aged, runny cheese. The fruity sourness persists throughout. Delicious and very balanced. The oak contributes some funkiness, and some light tannins, but there is no flavor of new oak or vanilla. The mouthfeel is pure and acetic, but benefits from the light tannins lending some structure. A complex beer, as complex as much stronger beers. Tremendously drinkable and ebjoyable.

Many thanks and much respect to IntriqKen for this one. Have to say I also love the labeling/packaging. Definitely the sexiest and sleekest I have seen in quite some time, if not ever.

Pours a fogged brown with basically no creme head. Nose is very antiseptic and funky and exactly what I would expect. Really, I could not expect more for the fragrance aspect. Flavor is definitely interesting. Total funky coming on the flavor. Again, this just seems like exactly what you would expect for the style. However. The fruit aspect of it is very shallow. I kind of would have liked to have just a touch more. Regardless, we are still bringing the funk here. Feel has a good liquid and carbonation to it. This is very easy to drink for a sour beer. Perhaps I am more used to it with my vastly experienced palate. Either way, this is an exemplary version of the style. Definitely worth seeking out.

12.7 oz bottle corked and caged, 07 vintage released in January 2008

I figured today being leap day was a day for me to take a big leap and break out a beer i have been scared to try since the only sour beer to date i have ever had was a drain pour.

A: Poured a fairly clear amber color with a rose hue. the head was just slightly off white and not too big, but it did settle into a thick ring and skimmed the top of the beer, laced very nice all the way down. Very nice looking beer.

S: Tart candy smell, oak, cherry, and some maltiness in the faint background.

T: Sour, or maybe tart is a better term. On my lips initially i tasted sour candy. Mid palate i could taste the maltiness of the brown ale with some slight nuttines to it, and the oak and slight vanilla flavors came out, and then at the back of the palate i was hit with sour cherries that gave me that sort of lock-jaw type feeling until after i swallowed. after the swallow the malty brown ale flavors stuck around and the oak flavor lingered as well. The oak was not as overpowering as i had expected, and for that i am glad, this beer has enough going on and yet still seems to be nicely balanced.

M/D: For what it is, a sour ale, it was very easy to drink. There was enough carbonation that it didnt seem syurp-y and the cherries did not taste at all medicinal like some cherry beers are. This is the first sour beer that i can say has not been a drain pour for me, so i am rating it as such with high marks. I have a couple more bottles, and i am not sure how fast they will fly out of the cellar, but someday i am sure i will get brave again :)

Appearance: Pours a hazy, reddish-brown body with a small, short-lived white head.

Smell: Bright, funky aroma of wine-macerated cherries and planks of toasted oak.

Taste: Whoa! Tart, juicy, lightly acidic cherry flavor at the forefront with hints of the sweet brown maltiness used as this fine beer's foundation. Distinct, well-placed tastes of oaky wood. True, it's funky, but contented to reside on the lighter end of the funk spectrum. Drying, lightly minerally finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium, soft carbonation.

Drinkability: A very well executed sour ale, and what a top-notch, classy bottle.

Red Poppy Ale pours up effervescent with streaming bubbles that create a thin whitish head that dissipates rather quickly revealing a slightly hazy reddish copper-cordovan body. The moderately acidic, grainy aroma isn't overly complex but has a nice intermingling of floral-herbal (cherry blossoms, hibiscus, lemongrass), fruitiness (cherry pits, citrus peel, grapeskin-green plum), and funky wildness (earthy barnyard, haylike, horse blanket, etc...) with some mild toasted oak & warm vanilla wafer notes. The flavor starts off rather grainy (biscuity) with a mild fruitiness (cherry turnover, lemon rind, peach pit) and spicy hop bitterness that carries into an acidic, dry-tannic, and slightly yeasty finish. This medium-light bodied fruited American Wild Ale is very enjoyably, but lacks depth & complexity when compared to its Flanders cousins. For those that are Patron Sinners, I'd recommend enjoying a bottle now & cellaring the other one. Here's to The Lost Abbey and the Crusade.

Part 1 of the Lost Abbey Sinner's Club

Appearance: Pours a dark, hazy maroon, bordering on brown into my Duvel tulip. The beer is topped by a small fizzy head the fades quickly. Minimal lacing on the glass.

Smell: Love the Brett funkiness right of the bat. Sweaty horse blanket and sour cherry fruitiness. As it warms a touch of caramel comes through.

Taste: Starts with tart sour cherries dominating then giving way to the ever present Brett funkiness. Slightly oaky as it warms with a touch of cider vinegar and caramel sweetness. A very mild hop bitterness makes an appearance near the finish.

Mouthfeel: Crisp, dry and refreshing. Thin and light in the mouth makes for easy drinking.

Drinkability/Notes: Another great beer from Lost Abbey. Lots going on here with tart, sour cherries, an underlying fruity sweetness and brett funkiness all aged in oak barrels. Extremely refreshing as its light, crisp and dry with a modest 5% abv. I could drink these all night and not get bored or sick of it. Highly drinkable. Absolutely seek this beer out. Highly recommended.

A-About a 3/4" light tan head on a brown amber body. Yeast is stuck on the bottom of the cork even after it had been siting for about 2 weeks.
S- Big tart cherries right in the nose, oak, big sour notes, citrus hints, funk, lemon, and some vinegar.
T- Sweet light tart cherries with just a hint of sour note. Oak, caramel malts, light hints of lemon, the sour seems to fade fast but stays on the tongue almost as a light sour bitterness thing. Little funk comes through and in the after taste is light cherries and oak. I think the oak dominates the little aftertaste there is. The more it warms the aftertaste stays around a bit stronger.
M- Medium body with medium carbonation.
D- It's good but wouldn't say it's one of my favorites from them. Is great for the style though.

A- Poured from a 375ml bottle. I had this beer with some friends at a restaurant and there is a big difference in appearance depending on where your pour comes from in the bottle. Bright ruby from the top and much more brown and murky from the bottom.

S- I got a lot of sour notes in this beer. I also get cherries and dark breads from the yeasts.

T- I really love this beer. I should say I didn't always like cherries but this beer and a few other lambics changed that. This is an incredible Belgian-style sour. You get many sour notes from the bacteria but not an astringent taste. There are also some sweet malt and cherry flavors that come through also. This beer is a great balance of sweet and sour.

M- A nice level of carbonation in this beer. A bit syrupy but not overly sticky.

D- Keep bringing them on. This is a great beer and it is only 5.5% alcohol so you can drink this all night. If you can find that much of it!

375 ml bottle acquired in a trade from a great BA named seaoflament, could not make it to the release and he picked me up one, thanks for giving me the opportunity to try this highly sought after Flanders brew

Poured into my Dogfish Head snifter, sipped on it for about an hour and a half to really see what changes take place as it warms, review #550, this was my second choice for Valentine's Day but Sexual Chocolate one because of its cool name

A-Root beer color, nice red tint when held next to the light, 3/4 inch off white bubbly head, large amounts of aggressive tiny bubbles, decent retention, nice lacing which is odd for this style of beer

S-Loads of cherries, sour aromas, hint of spice, vanilla, oak, hay, funkiness, orange peel, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sweet scents as it warmed a little bit more, nice tangy accents all the way through, some sour grapes and a tad of vinegar, oak comes to the surface after the glass sits in my hands for a few minutes, also some vanilla, fair share of bready malt causing a nice chewiness to cancel out some of the sourness, more cherries, nice long aftertaste, beer tasted extremely fresh

T-Tart sour cherries hit the back of the tongue immediately, in the middle there is some sweet fruity flavors, then the finish is slightly dry with more of a puckering cherry taste,

M-Tarty and crisp mouthfeel, light body, slightly puckering towards the beginning, taste lingered a long time even after a small sip, nice level of carbonation

D-Could drink this stuff all day, super light on the stomach and very flavorful, only five percent alcohol, goes down very easily, would go excellent with alongside a meal as well

Lost Abbey brews yet another fantastic beer, pretty sure this replaced Le Woody or is essentially the same beer, wish I had more of this stuff, probably will not change much with any age without brettanomyces, hopefully they brew more of this next year, best Flanders I have had, nice looking bottle with the new labels, worth all the hype, definitely would drink again and highly recommended to everybody

Had last night during Valentine's dinner with the wife. Poured from the bottle into an oversized wine glass. It pours a deep ruby red, with a thin white head that didn't last long. The smell is of citrus tartness, yeasty funk, and spicy malt. The taste is pretty tart up front, with the funky yeast flavor and malt sweetness coming through toward the end. The beer had a certain spice to it that was nice. Overall a little to tart to drink too much of, and it is a little more refined (i.e. less funky) then some similar beers I have had of the style, still a fantastic beer.

So I have the rare chance to try this neat beer. Knowing it's a sour / wild beer I'm curious how it will come across.

A - Pours with a fury but below gusher level. Color is a very cloudy reddish brown, nice light tan head, definitely had sediment get in the glass.

S - spicy sour notes, sour cherries dominate everything

T - Modest acidic sour yeasts (yum!), tart sour cherries, light sweet caramel notes, oak melded into a wonderful medly of liquid satisfaction.

M - light bodied, crisp tart sourness with a light aftertaste. nice steady tingly carbonation.

D - aside from the floaties reducing the visual appeal on this one, this drinks wonderfully! tarte, cleansing on the palate, light bodied and refreshing.

Ok, I think you get the gist. More breweries should make this style of beer!

2008 bottle.

Appearance - Ruddy brown, quite hazy and distinctly unfiltered. The head retained remarkably well in an oversized wine glass. This beer should be decanted carefully; the bottle has a ton of sediment at the bottom.

Smell - Wonderfully musty and oaky. Pronounced vanilla with mild barnyard funk and sourness. Cherries are present but not as dominating as they are on the tongue.

Taste - Sour, tangy cherries make up the backbone, while oak provides depth and balance. Acidity is fairly low despite the tart flavor. Vanilla appears more and more as the beer warms, blending harmoniously with the sour cherries. The finish is dry and long, revealing more of the young oaky flavor.

Mouthfeel - Fairly light-bodied and crisp on the tongue; slighty drying to the palate. Certainly not quaffable despite the light body; small sips provide a ton of flavor.

Overall - The 08 and 09 batches are outstanding. A Flemish style sour without all the acetic acid, and a great balance between oak and fruit. Later batches are solid but not as exceptional.

375ml corked and caged bottle served at cellar temperature and poured into a tulip glass

A - Poured a very nice and extremely cloudy and hazy light brown with just a hint of a reddish tint to it. This was very murky, but you could still see some of the light coming through on the sides and bottom of the glass, and in fact there was enough of it that I could notice some very fine sediment on the bottom, as well as some carbonation coming up from the bottom of the glass. A very nice head of approximately one and a half inches in height graced the top of it, and this settled down gradually, leaving behind a noticeable amount of side glass lace but nothing that was terribly too thick. The color on it was exquisite on this one, with just this burnt sienna color ( my son has a big box of crayons) that was just very nice. Did not come off terribly thick through the pour and seemed to have a light consistency to it but we shall see.

S - The aroma itself was very strong and very pungent. Almost immediately the yeast was in your face, giving it and extremely sour presence that I was not expecting, but should have known it was coming. Underneath that the clearly evident layer of cherries was starting to come through, tying to sweeten it up and giving it that very nice overall fruity vibe. Lots of spices now coming through as well, hints of what I picked up as cinnamon and fig were mixed in very well. Overall a very strong and very full aroma that was inviting and decidedly alive.

T - I really fell in love with this one upon the first sip that I took. The flavors were so vibrant and so well defined that it was very interesting to watch this one evolve over the course of the session. The first thing you would notice upon taking a sip was the nice sour taste coming though from the yeast. Big sour notes here, once they calmed down you started to pick up the fruity notes that were lying underneath of it. Lots of tart cherries that were really pushing their way up front and blending in nicely with a very spicy nutmeg like flavor. Very well balanced with no one thing really dominating over another, making for a very nice profile. Lots of different things going on here, with hints of even grapes and/or raisins starting to show as it warms up. The finish at least to me seemed to be the best part of the entire session. At first it was subtle, giving you a sour or bitter dry finish that drew out the flavor, but once you managed to run through that initial finish, their was this long lasting barrel aged cherry sweetness that was so good, it is almost impossible for me to accurately describe. I literally tasted that for a good 30 minutes after I finished that last drop. It was very sweet and bitter at the same time, not overpowering, just this subtle long lasting taste. This was really quite breathtaking to be honest. A wonderful taste here overall.

M - Very light bodied ale, despite the huge flavors, this one really never did get too big on you. The carbonation profile was excellent as well, never going flat, even though I took my sweet old time in finishing it, there was never a dull moment. I would have to say it was more crisp and refreshing then it was smooth, and really just superb all around in every way.

D - Now this was just perfect here. Nothing at all should be subtracted, as I rarely find something that I could sit down and enjoy sipping on for more then an hour in a sitting without becoming bored. This was it though. The flavors were exquisite and constantly evolving with changing temperatures, the carbonation was damn near perfect, never getting dull or flat, consistency was perfect, leaving it light, but not thin, and the ABV a modest 5%. I mean c'mon what more could you possibly even begin to ask for. I would have had ten of these if I could have.

Overall this one literally floored me. I have loved everything that has come out of Lost Abbey, and not being biased, but seriously, who else is this consistent with quality, I mean it seems everything new they put out is better then the one before that, its almost unheard of. This was just tremendous. A light fruity sour ale that had me literally giddy with excitement. This was something not only I would gladly have again, but that I would be actively searching for more of. One of the best I have ever had.

Received this from a very generous individual who shall remain nameless.

12.7 oz cage and corked bottle poured into a tulip glass. Only 60 cases of this were bottled, so I feel quite fortunate to have the opportunity to sample this rare treat, especially living on the other side of the country.

Pours a murky autumn brown color with a half finger head that quickly dies down to a paper thin layer of bubbles which remains throughout. Swirling the glass yields a small amount of lacing, but nothing more. Smell is tart cherries, sour apples, and slight oak notes. Some floral aromas as well. I'm not too familiar with flowers, but there is a bit of a rose scent to it. Pretty funky in the nose through and through, but not overpowering by any means. Sour fruit tartness up front of cherries, grapes, and apple with a leather like flavor as well. The fruit on the tongue isn't nearly as strong as I had expected. An interesting malt character finds its way in the mouth as well. Aftertaste is a tangy wood flavor. This one really has a wonderful feel to it. Fluffy and smooth from start to finish with a perfect carbonation. Leaves the mouth dry and begging for more. The combination of the amazing mouthfeel and low abv makes this pretty easy drinking. What a truly unique beer.

I had the pleasure to wait in line, and have a taster at the release. I waffled whether I should get the $3 taster, or $8 pint. I went with the taster and I am glad I did. It is an excellant sipping beer, so I think a whole pint would have been overload, for me. Great time at the release though. Cracked one open last night to share with my oenophile wife.

A- Light orangey/brown. Like weak coffee or ice tea appearance. Nearly no head that quickly dissipates.

S- Bright & tart sour cheeries, with a hint of orange. Light wood, slight phenol at the end.

T- Tart, sour cherries, tangy wood, sour cherries, and sour cherries.

M- Thin. Quickly slides off my tongue, light carbonation. Makes my salivary glands work overtime.

D- If you enjoy this style, or sour in general this is a great brew. 1 bottle is definetly enough for me. I think this would pair excellent with food.

Enjoyed on tap at the brewery release. Being towards the front of the line, I was seemingly one of the rare few who got a whole pint to enjoy.

Poured a hazy brown with a small head. Smelled primarily of sour cherries with a little funk. Nothing like Funky Barrel, but still appealing. Taste was initially tart with more subtle cherry, getting more funky and barnyard like as I neared the end of the pint and what was left warmed. As noted by others, the finish is on the dry side, which would have worked well if I wasn't so hungry at the time. Probably would have been even better with some food to compliment it. When I finished the pint I was both happy to be finished and sad it was gone.

Very good brew, and I'm very glad I got to try it, but not my favorite offering from The Lost Abbey. I got my four bottles, and have already traded one away to a nearby BA. I'll likely enjoy my bottles sooner rather than later given that Tomme says there was no brett added to the bottles, so I'm not sure that this will change much in the bottle.

Sampled in a small tulip at the release on 1-19. Tons of sediment in my glass compared with little to no sediment in the glasses around me. I though about sending it back, but decided to let it warm up and settle for 20 minutes while I waited in line. After about 2 minutes I started sipping it because i just couldn't wait. First aroma is that of overripe cherries with some brettamyces in the background. Mouthfeel was tart and slightly puckering aftertaste. Hint of green apples and caramel malt in the finish. I am new to this style but I loved the balanced effervescense which made it quite drinkable. Not as sour of a finish as its cantillon counterparts.

Tried this at the release. The keg kicked before I got in the door though, so mine was a taster from the beer angel (molly). One disclaimer - our lot had cork floating around, which was disconcerting, but I will forgive.

The beer had a rich golden color, although my flute was a little cloudy. I didn't pour it, so I will just assume the smallish white head didn't last long. I never had a Flanders Red before, so this was a new experience for me. The aroma was unique, you could tell right away that this is a sour ale. Maybe a tiny hint of some residual cherry smell as well.

I was also unprepared for the taste - light but very tangy. I didn't really like it at the time. It finishes fairly dry, and it took me awhile to grow into the tartness. I was also slightly off-put by the presence of the cork floating into my mouth. I'm going to hold on to one or two of these bottles and see how they are in a year, maybe the next time Red Poppy rolls out.

Had a taster at the release in a small port wine glass. It was suppose to be on tap but for some reason this one was from a bottle. Poured a cloudy reddish brown with white head nice lacing.( the guy next to me had a clear reddish brown, guessing I got a sample from towards the bottom of the bottle) Nose is sour cherry with Lost Abbey funk and hint of malt and oak. Taste is smooth in fact very smooth for a sour. Nice balance with cherries that are both sour and tart, malt sweetness, and mild dry oak finish. Mouthfeel is medium body with a good carbonation level and dryness. This is a great drinking Oud Bruin very easy to drink for the style and very balanced and layered. Bravo

Had 2 samples of this one on-tap at the Lost Abbey-Red Poppy release.

Poured a golden color with hints of red, a tiny crown of foam around the glass.

Aroma was great. Lots of cherry, tart and sweet, lightly toasted malts and fruity aromas. Some funky aromas in the background which increased slightly as it warmed up.

Tasted very close to the aroma. Tart and sweet cherries with crisp and toasted malt flavors, a bit of caramel and a dry, sour, finish.

This one is really easy to drink, the only obstacle is the very dry finish after 10oz or so. Definitely worth seeking out.

Decided to pop open a bottle today 4/4, after trying this one at the January release.

Wow, it looks much darker than it did at the release, WTF? This beer seems completely alien to me now. This one pours a dark ruby with some shades of dark wood. A rapidly descending half inch of foam topped the head. 3.5

Aroma is similar to what I remember in the release but this one is a little maltier and with more vinegar aromas. Still, the sweet and tart cherries dominate the nose with hints of oak but it now has a huge caramel malt backbone. Various berries, jam, vinegar, and fruit-roll up candy. The aroma is still mouth-watering but not as crisp as it was a few months back. 3.5-4

Taste is a phantom of what it used to be. The wonderful tart cherries that once fancied the tongue are almost completely gone except for a fleeting memory in the back of the palate. A slight metallic taste in the finish as well...very sad. A bit sweeter than what it used to be. 3

Carbonation level is still very good and mouthfeel is also good, maybe a little thinner? 3.5

Wow, this one started to go downhill fast. I did hear from Tomme that this one should not be aged and I agree.

3-14-09 (second release, Jan 2009)
Poured into a Lost Abbey tumbler. Appearance is reddish brown, mildly clear. Smell is dominated by sour cherry. Taste is also dominated by sour cherry, and a puckering sourness. The style allows for low to medium carbonation, and this is definitely on the low side. I'm not going to say it's lower than it should be, but it's a little low for my tastes. Just an excellent beer. Ratings updated.


2-3-08 (first release, Jan 2008)
Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass. It's a clear brown liquid with an ever so slight tint of red. The off-white head is hard to form and is made up of large bubbles that fall very fast. The smell is lactic sour but there seems to be a smooth subdued funk behind it. The taste has a sourness and the cherry is sometimes easy to pick out and sometimes appears to be absent. There is a very fine carbonation to this, tiny bubbles that tingle a bit.

On tap and poured into a small flute glass at The Lost Abbey. Pours a pretty clear but noticeably unfiltered light brown. The smell is tart, the cherries are apparent but definitely not as strong as when we sampled at the barrel tasting in August '07. The taste is tart, slightly acidic, the cherries come in mostly at the beginning of the sip, and it finishes with a medium dryness. It's definitely not as sweet I will have to re-update this review when I try a bottle.

Had a chance to try a taster of this at the brewery, then chilled/cracked a bottle when I returned home.

Pours a hazy ruddy brown color. Maybe half an inch head. Decent looking beer.

Smells like sour cherries, some sort of plum/fig/raisin background, and some oakiness. Taste is quite tart, with a delicious hint of sour cherry pulp (it's not a strong cherry flavor, which was surprising given the smell and color) layered over some serious wood/oak tones.

There's some malt sweetness in here, and maybe a hint of lighter fruits ... maybe some plums or figs. The overriding flavor, though is a semi-acidic soury base over oak. Delicious, very drinkable. The mouthfeel is a fascinating dry, champagne-esque finish that really makes the flavors in this pop. Perfect carbonation. One of the most enjoyable "mouthfeelable" beers I can recall. I love the dryness.

Dark reddish brown color, a hint of funky sourness in the nose, very mellow cherry sweetness and sour flavor. This one just gets better and better the more you have it in the same day. Truly amazing. I had this one with Tomme and Vince at Port Brewing after getting out of work at Stone Brewing. They told me that this is essentially Le Woody Brune with a new name. Can't wait until it is released!
