Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent.

Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart.

The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

On tap at monks during the lost abbey event.

A- almost three fingers of tanish head a top a ruddy deep red brown brew. Head leaves no lace or stick.

A- good amount of earth red wine vinegar and some sweet and sour cherries but to a lesser extent. The cherries don't give a big bright sour they come off more subdued. Rich malt backbone giving a darker bread touch.

T- opens up with a light sweet and sour cherry and funky oak hit with a touch of red wine vin. Malts come off sweet with some dark brown sugar and bread. Light acidity not the punch I was hoping for, more of a earthy thing going on.

M- a bit above medium in body and lightly carbed. Solid pucker but nothing outstanding.

O- its a good red but the cherries seem to be a bit over the hill and lacking the fresh sour hit. I would like to try the base beer without the cherries and see what that's like. Up against rodenbach gc its got some work to do.

Overripe dark fruits and booze spring forth from the popped top. Dark brown and covered with a thick quilting of very resilient tan froth. Strong notes of vinegar and more dark fruits such as plum and prune are noticed aromatically. Tastes of sweet vinegar, dark cherry, plum, oak and grain followed by a slight and fleeting funkiness. Dry as bone and medium in body. With exceptional beers like these floating around it's hard not to become addicted to sours.

Pours to a cherry cola toned reddish brown body. Head is just a skim of rich tan foam. Nose has a nice creamy tartness with ripe cherry tones, cola and minerals with some zest. Enters the mouth with a sharp tart tone that is cherry skins. This tartness quickly mellows with mice dark maltiness that really balances the brew. Dark fruit follows all this with some accompanying tannins. Mouthfeel is thick and tart especially on the very back of the tongue. This beer is especially under carbonated. Overall it is nicely drinkable.

sitting on a year now, more so as it got lost in the shuffle of my cellar...but time to pop it tonight....

a - almost a chocolate brown in appearance with a very thin layer of head that appears to be breathing as i type...

s - cherries right away, tartness on the nose...bit of a vanilla ...

t - explosion in the mouth... a beer that's truly alive... immediate cherries - front and back; tarty mouth puckerer! As my palate calms down a bit, there's a slight note left behind from hits time in the oak..

m - liquid form of soured pop rockets? crazy good!

o - Great beer!

Out of a corked and caged 375ml bottle and into a small snifter. The ale appears a slightly murky crimson brown color with two fingers of light tan foam. Aromas and flavors consist of cherry, plum, oaky vanilla, a mild citric pucker, light roasted grain, mild vinegar, nice and quenching. The Bruin is amply carbonated with a medium body and a lingering and pleasing sour, fruity twang. Very nice overall.
