Notes: Convicted of a dark art, the crowd will gather to watch as they raze your earthen existence. An intolerable pain is the cross you’ll bear that day as you are removed from this righteous world. No one will summon the courage to save you in fear of their life. It sucks. But such is the life of a witch. In honor of your fleeting existence, we brewed Witch’s Wit. A light and refreshing wheat beer, it’s exactly the sort of thing you might expect to find being passed around the center of town on witch burning day. Say hello to the Prince of Darkness for us.

Outstanding spices meld with tangy wheat and Belgian funk in a delicious and refreshing beer. Color is a hazy straw and carbonation is nice and brisk, perhaps 3V. Smell is of citrus, and orange and citrus flavors are balanced by a noticeable hop bitterness and not quite enough Belgian yeast character. The sweet spices accentuate the residual sugar to make the beer slightly too sweet. But these are quibbles one only notices in beers that are close to glory as Witch's Wit.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a tulip glass.

A: Very hazy, medium golden color with over one finger of diminishing white foam head. No lacing remains on the glass. Specks of rusty brown sediment are visible at the bottom of the glass.

S: Prominently featured in the smell are wheat and yeast, also joined by bright lemon citrus and faint banana.

T: Begins with bright, acidic grain, followed by lemon and lime citrus and cloves emerging in the middle. Wheat begins to blanket the palate late. Dryness prevails throughout this beer's flavor profile, becoming particularly evident in the crisp, but slightly astringent, finish.

M: Medium viscosity, soft and creamy on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D: This beer represents a very strong effort to capture an idealized Belgian-style wit--hardly unique nor extreme, but classic. In fact, it reminds of one of the greats of the style--St. Bernardus wit--as much as any other bottled American wit (and blows away those few other west coast renditions that actually make it into the bottle). Such a comparison is not given here lightly; while it is remarkable that this beer is a San Diego rendition of the style, no handicap is necessary to compare it to the best around.

750 mL bottle, corked and caged.

A: Pours a pale gold with a light white head, but no yeast appears to be present.
S: Some light spices, but not your typical wit.
T: Very sweet, sugar and honey appear before the light spice, but the honey/sugar dominate the palate.
M: Light bodied and well carbonated.
D: Just a bit too sweet to drink more than one glass. Honey instead of orange peel and coriander doesn't appeal to me that much.

The Wit pours out as a cloudy yellow colored brew with a fizzy white head on top. The smell is citrusy and floral, theres some spicy notes too in there. The taste of the beer is much like any other wit out there. There some grainy wheat and citrus with a little bit of spiciness in there. Not an overly exciting brew. Glad I had it but I won't need to have again.

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a Koningshoeven chalice. Bottled 26 July 2012.

A: Fizzy white head and a pale, white-gold body. Hazy.

S: Dull yeast and grain. Faint spice and light citrus.

T/M: An excellent witbier! I am not disappointed by the Lost Abbey. Light, spicy, and zesty, with fresh citrus and grassy hops. The light-bodied wheat smooths and sweetens. The aftertaste is lingering coriander, with a twist of citrus peel.

O: Great example of the style. Highly recommended and immensely drinkable. Would have again.
