Double cherry was on tap at the brewery during the V009 release. Reviewed from notes. Served in a taster glass.

Pour is light reddish brown with reasonably high amount of head. Bubbles are very large and porous similar to regular red poppy.

Smell is vinegar, red wine, and some brown sugar. The cherries come through in a nice brightness.

Tastes very sour. Tons of cherry and vinegar. The flavor profile is similar to regular red poppy, but the vinegar is toned down and the fruit is turned up. Tastes much better, but also much more sour than the regular version.

Body is a little thin, and carbonation is medium high.

Overall, a good, and very sour beer. The lower acetobacter was a huge improvement over regular poppy. This one is also good reasonably cold, which I can't say for the standard.

On tap at Night of the Barrels 2011. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a dirty dark garnet color with an off-white head and a good amount of lacing on the way down. The cherries really dominate throughout. Regular Red Poppy has enough when fresh, but this takes it to another level. Interesting to note is that Tomme said that no new cherries are added; rather, the regular version is combined with extra cherry juice when kegging. Good lactic character with a bit of oak, as well as some acetic acid. The latter is mild.

The flavor does a beautiful job combining acidity with the fruit and then throwing in a bit of oak and tannin for good measure. Nice complexity and a dominant fruit presence. Supremely tart with mild notes of acetic acid. Oak carries through the finish. Fantastic brew. Well done.

From 03/11/11 notes. Had on tap at Night of the Barrels up in Boston, MA.

a - Pours a murky ruby red color with less than an inch of white head and light carbonation evident.

s - Smells of sour cherries, sour raspberries, vinegar, oak, and other tart fruits. Little bit of funk as well, but not too much; much more of a sour fruit thing going on in the nose.

t - Tastes of tart cherries, oak, sour dark fruits, and some funk. A little more oak and funk than the nose, but that tart cherries is up front again. Great taste.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation.

d - A really great sour from Lost Abbey. Unfortunately I haven't had the normal Red Poppy yet, but would love to have this one again. Lots of tart cherries and sour fruits in the nose and taste.

Had this on tap at EBF 2011 Night of the Barrels.

Looks like I expected, deep red in color with a very light head which Ive come accustomed to with my LA experiences.

Smell reaks of cherries with slight oak and funky undertones.

Cherries come out really nice in this, then the oak and a little tart with a subtle funkiness on the finish. Very, very good.

Mouthfeel is near perfect. Carbonation is not too high and not too low, just where it needs to be.

This was very drinkable and I wish this was bottled. Picked up some of 2011 Red Poppy the next day and am looking forward to trying it, hopefully I wont be let down.

Hell yeah, thanks to cloudskipper for sharing this tick at Lost Abbey night at City Beer after it ran out. Over on the other site this is listed as an alias of Red Poppy, but that's BS in my opinion, as this is a considerably different brewski (and a superior one if you ask me).

Cloudy deep burgundy in color with a small off-white head. Looks more or less how it should, if not particularly attractive.

The aroma is massive cherries, really intense. Some oakiness and funk as well as slight vinegar as well.

Huge, huge cherry flavor. Just jumps out of the glass at you. Damn tasty, oaky, mildly funky and tart.

Slight acidity on the palate with a nice tingling from the fruit and tartness that is typical of Lost Abbey sours.

I like this one a lot. Good job, Tomme.

On-tap at Stone Sour Fest

A: The pour is the same murky mahogany color that Red Poppy is, with a nice off-white head.

S: The cherries are certainly noticeable, and that's what I was expecting. Good oak notes as well, a mild mustiness, and a hint of acetic acid along.

T: The flavor is completely dominated by the cherries and the wood. The two battle back and forth, each sip seems to alternate which characteristic is more prevalent. There is a more complex flavor than with regular Red Poppy, that seems to have additional some yeast esters. Not overly sour, but nicely tart.

M: The body is medium with a rolling and smooth carbonation. This one is bone dry.

D: As to whether I like this or "regular" Red Poppy more, I can't really say. Both were quite enjoyable and different in their own ways.

Pours an orange brown with quite a bit of sediment. Some ruby highlights, maybe.

Smells like bursting cherry and oak notes. Very solid flavor, like drinking ripe, soured cherries dropped with oak chips and a bit of ... spice? Hmm...maybe that's some component of the aging process.

Sour, but not overwhelmingly so. A fair amount of carbonation. Really enjoyed.

A: a murky, light brown

S: cherries are definitely there!

T: yes, the cherries, but also brown sugar and some kind of spice. When I mentioned cinnamon, Tomme neither confirmed nor denied. The mellow tartness let all those other flavors shine.

M: great level of carbonation

D: highly quaffable, this is a great Lost Abbey treat

5oz or so pour at the toronado SD.

A: Murky brown. No head but decent lacing.

S: Good tart and sourness. Lots of sour cherries.

T/M: Loads of sour cherries with a healthy puckering tartness. A bit funky. Fuller mouthfeel.

D: easy drinking but damn expensive.

On tap at City Beer Store for their Lost Abbey night. From notes jotted down after I got home.

A: It's funny that largadeer referred to this as looking like bile, because that was my first (unspoken) thought upon seeing the glass. It's a murky puce body that doesn't look all that appealing. Swirling produced a nice head that lasted for a minute or so.

S: Beautiful cherry aroma. Brown sugar, toast, oak, vanilla.

T: Tart red cherries up front, with a delicious brown sugar and toast flavor that defines a wonderful backbone. Great flavor contrast that prevents the beer from being too sweet or too tart. Small sourness in the mid-taste, with a tannic finish that brings out light vanilla.

M: Light-bodied... Well-carbed. I forgot to pay attention to how dry it was (if it was), but I had no trouble finishing the pour and don't seem to recall any lingering sweetness.

D: Well deserving of an A. Great beer. My only complaint is that I HATE the Lost Abbey pricing structure ($15 / 375mL, FML) and I just don't see myself getting more than one bottle, if that.

On tap at City Beer Store, enjoyed a few of these during their Lost Abbey event for SF Beer Week.

Murky and opaque reddish-brown in the glass, looks like a glass of bile, quite frankly. It's got an almost grey color to it. On a more positive note, the head retention is great.

The aroma is absolutely incredible, like cutting into a fresh tart cherry; you get all the complexity and depth of a whole piece of fruit. To my surprise, there's more to be found: the dark malt base is subtle but present, lending a light toasty, bready character; there's also a touch of brown sugar, vanilla and restrained lacto sourness.

It tastes equally amazing, like biting into a fresh tart cherry. Sweeter than the regular Red Poppy, but nowhere near cloying; there's plenty of balancing sourness and a touch of oaky astringency. I get toasty dark malt, brown sugar and vanilla beneath the massive fruit flavor. The mouthfeel is medium to full, the additional fruit adds a richness that the regular Red Poppy doesn't have, yet this is still incredibly drinkable. The finish is sweet and tart, lightly oaky and with a hint of vanilla lingering beneath the cherries.

Having tried the standard Red Poppy on tap the day before, this version is very different but equally delicious. This is nowhere near the subtle, balanced beer that bottled Red Poppy is; the fruit character is dominant and remarkable. What a great beer.

Special version brewed just for O'Briens 15th Anniversary, even better than the normal version if you can believe that, reviewed from notes, color was a medium brown mixed with red tones, thin 3/4 inch slightly creamy tan head that dissipates quickly, some lacing, aroma is full of loads of cherries first and foremost, balsamic vinegar, oak, tart, earthiness, some mild spice, and fruit juice, flavor is like Red Poppy but with a lighter acidic feel and a lot more luring sweetness, taste is real nice and more mellow, finish still lasts almost a full minute, tastes like cherry juice was infused with the original batch, tart, sweet, lightly acidic, and fruity mouthfeel, medium bodied, moderate level of carbonation, could drink a whole lot of this, sweetness might takes it toll after a while but pretty easy to drink considering how much fruit went into this, one big thing I noticed from this one is the presence of more fruit, much sweeter and juicier but that is not a bad thing at all, wish the recipe stayed this way, wow the massive amounts of cherries that went into this did wonders, hope to see more of it in the future, recommended

I had this on tap during the O'Brien's anniversary celebration. This was blended solely for this occasion.

The beer is a deep red with a small head and minimal retention. The aroma is of...sour cherries! Are you surprised? There is much more tart cherry to this than the original red poppy, though I haven't had it for quite some time. Other aromas are of oak and vanilla.

The flavor is of cherries as well. Very very cherry. Nice and tart and a very nice level of fruity sourness. There's some lacto, vanilla, and some oak. The finish is long and sweet, sour, and tart.

The carbonation is good and the drinkability is good as well. I love this stuff and I'm anticipating the 09 release of Red Poppy.
