Had on tap at LA Confessional in Cardiff. Wow. Excellent draft. Beautiful, smooth and a rich barreled beer. Delicious BBA version of their classic Serpent’s Stout.

Enjoyed on draft at ChurchKey in Washington, DC. I've enjoyed Serpent's Stout multiple times in the past, despite not having rated it here. That said, this is one of the biggest improvements I've experienced from barrel-ageing. Smooth, lush, rich, but without cloying sweetness or overpowering booziness. Mildly vinous, thick, with brown sugar, less anise than the base beer, old but not oxidized. Really a delight.

750ml cork and caged bottle from 2017. Teku glass. Dark black body, one finger offwhite head, good retention, no lacing. Aroma is cocoa, a bit of milk chocolate, slightly chalky, touch of dark fruit, fair bit of whiskey heat. Flavour is a bit less complex; very dry finish that is a bit chalky. Otherwise the whiskey combines with milk chocolate and cocoa up front, but fades away halfway into the palate. It's good otherwise. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, chalky finish really detracts from this beer for me, plus the dry finish is a bit of a bother.

fabulous beer. i have always admired the original serpents stout, such a great expression of dark grains and a beer being rich without being sweet, full of body and luxurious but dry. the bourbon adds a lot, filling in some of the void in the middle of it where a lot of these employ sweeter crystal malts, without them in the usual context, the bourbon comes right in there, all loaded with vanilla and maple flavors and with a huge fancy smoothness from the oak, its complex to say the least, barrel char bringing out an even darker side of the grain, a smoked tobacco element, raisin and ash, some sweetness from the whiskey but dry and bitter in the end, insanely sturdy and palate coating and regal, boozy too, this one is a bit hot, but it slows me down enough to let this warm up, open up, and take me on a ride. these guys do barrel ageing as well as anyone in the game, especially with these strong ales, stouts and belgians and stuff. this takes an already special beer and brings it to the next level, no need for adjuncts here, this is as layered and complex as they come, and a real treat to get to drink at the actual brewery! top level barrel aged stout!

Serpent's Stout is one of my favorite Russian imperial stouts so I was excited crack this one. 750 mL bottle split between myself and two friends. Pours pitch black with a bit of tan head that laces onto the glass well as it goes down. The nose is primarily bourbon and chocolate with a touches of vanilla, coffee, and sweet dark fruit. The oak from the barrels is dominant up front followed by notes of chocolate, coffee, licorice, and dark fruit. It strikes a great balance between bitter and sweet. Feel is on the plus side of average with a lower carbonation and somewhat dry finish. Overall, this was everything that I was hoping for. I could see how some people may find it a bit boozy but I really enjoyed the somewhat aggressive barrel flavor on this one.

750 mL bottle. Black with an ample khaki head. Smells of lots of bourbon. Very strong. Tastes of straight bourbon as well. Some nutty malts and oak. Big and alcoholic. Small pour still took forever to drink. Really dominated by bourbon.
