On Tap

5th Annual Barrel Night
The Lost Abbey
San Marcos, CA

Amber and crimson in color with a thin khaki colored head that leaves spots of lace down the glass.

Strong aroma consisting, strangely, of soured grapes, a sweet sugary syrup, almost honey-like, and quite a bit of boozy alcohol heat. This is certainly interesting, and definitely complex, I just can't find much to love about it.

The flavor isn't quite as aggressive as the aroma. There's lots of fruit flavors (grapes, cherries, raisins) with a mild, earthy funk and a woody character as well. Again, this is complex and interesting, though not incredibly enjoyable. A sipper.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

An interesting and unique beer, though not a lot here to love.

On-tap at Lost Abbey

A: Pours a bright but dark red color with no real head to speak of.

S: Intense wine aroma, almost too much. Fairly boozy, too. A bit of chocolate oxidation as well as some of the base spice/herb notes coming through (rosemary?).

T: A light tartness of cherry and raisin. Heavy on the wine flavor as well. There is still some herbal character to it as well as a fair amount of oak, maybe a hint of vinegar.

M: Medium to full bodied with medium carbonation.

O: Possibly the surprise of the night. The nose was a bit much, but pretty good flavor.

From 02/03/12 notes. Had on tap at NOTB up in Boston, MA.

a - Pours a deep garnet color with an inch of off white head and low carbonation evident.

s - Smells of bourbon, dark fruits, spice, caramel malts, fruity malts, and light spice. Bourbon is noticable and nice in the nose.

t - Tastes of bourbon, alcohol, dark fruits, bready malts, and fruity malts. A bit muddled and the bourbon is strong. A step down from the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. A tiny bit hot.

o - Overall a decent beer, but I didn't find it an improvement on the base beer. Taste became a bit dominated by the bourbon and muddled.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ, 2008 Vintage,

A: Pours amber red with a light white head, good retention, moderate lace.

S: Interesting. Candied fruit, honey, very perfume like without all the chemical gunk. What I assume an Ottoman harem smells like. A 5 for it's unique beauty.

T: Has almost a caramel Belgian yeasty malt flavour initially, but then the other flavours come. Sweet orange peel, apricot, ginger, cinnamon, defintite honey. What I assuming is the frankincense and myrrh come in adding a weird but unique and interesting herbal quality. The barrel brings everything into balance offering a light vanilla and helps to make the herbal acridity of the original disappear.

M: Smooth and silky, light ethanol feel, full-bodied.

D: The reason this is lower is because the beer flavours are so different and intriguing, this beer is really a slow sipper, one to contemplate. A must try.
